Chapter 72

Alessia

The next morning, I left Angelo to rest while I went to his mother’s room to check up on her. Annie’s mom was the one I met together with her helping her with her hair. “Let me do that.” I offered, approaching them.

Annie’s mom handed the elastic hair band to me. We switched positions. I gathered her hair in one place since it was already washed and combed. “How is Angelo?” Came her question. I briefly stopped but continued afterward. “He looks fine. I'm sure he would be.” I answered shortly.

I rolled her hair into a bun, smoothening the front with my palms. “Thank you. Let me go and check up on him.” he declared getting off the bed.

“I will be right back.” I didn't miss to notice the excitement in her voice. Annie’s mom and I watched as she slowly made her way out of the door. It would be the first conversation between a mother and son. I hope everything goes well. I silently prayed.

Annie later entered the room and took me away with her. She didn’t say anything, only grabbed my wrist and took me out. “Where are we going?” I asked the moment we reached outside the hospital.

“Home. Because it looks like if I don’t take you myself you won’t leave. You stink.”

I rolled my eyes at her remark. “It’s not even nighttime yet. Stop making a big deal out of it.”

“Yes, I will. You didn’t even have a wink of rest.”

“It’s not time for bed, Annie.”

“Oh, you want to stay here without taking a shower, eating, and expect yourself to be okay.” I know Annie was frustrated but that doesn’t mean she will lash out at me like that. I don’t mind staying at the hospital with him. Even though I hated the smell of it.

“I have to be here.” I commenced. Annie fixated her calculating eyes on me. “Why am I even wasting my time? Let’s go.” Before I knew it, she dragged me away and pushed me inside a car that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. My eyes widened seeing Marco was the driver.

“What—”

“To Angelo’s house please.”

“Right away my lady!” Marco stepped on the accelerator and took off.

“Are you crazy? I am not a thief for you to push me that way.” I exclaimed throwing her a glare. “And you Marco, I have a serious conversation with you.” I pointed a warning finger at him.

“Conversation about what?” I saw him lift a teasing brow through the rear mirror. “Shut it!”

I didn’t resist smacking her back. “If you strangle me, you still won’t get out of this car.”

The drive to Angelo’s car was somehow fast. “Can you wait and take us back to the hospital?” Annie asked Marco who was chewing gum. Where did he get it from? He wasn’t chewing anything earlier.

“I don’t think so. I have something to do. You guys shouldn’t worry you’re safe. The devils are caged in now. Annie, you know how to drive. Pick one of the cars. I’m off. See you later, Alessia.” I don’t know why he was winking at me but I will sure deal with him when I get the time.

The first thing that I was greeted with was something burning or should I say like a smell of burnt bread. My stomach instantly turned into hunger. I don’t remember eating anything solid. I didn’t even taste any food apart from water.

“What am I smelling in this house,” Annie spoke beside me. Just then Lillian made her appearance. “You guys came at the right time. I wanted to call Kelvin so he would pick the bread up for Angelo.”

Annie and I exchanged looks. I don’t know what was going on in her mind but I know for a fact that the bread won’t get out of the house. Annie and I dashed to the kitchen at the same time.

“I think you made the right choice in bringing me home. I feel much alive now.” I breathe out heavily crashing on the bed. Annie joined me. “I know right? The way we devour the bread like hungry fools.”

A chuckle erupted from me. I lay on my back, my face to the ceiling. Silence then fell on us. I went into a series of thinking. “Annie,” I called.

“Hm?”

“Will Angelo be okay?”

“Of course he will. He will get his kidney fixed and get back in shape.” I turned my face to look at her. “But I’m worried Annie. I don’t want to lose him, Annie.” I confessed. I had a lot of things running through my mind from last night to today. I know Angelo will pretend to be okay but deep down, I know how much that will eat him up. I can’t bear to see him in pain. He had done so much for me.

I felt Annie’s hand atop mine. “Listen Alessia, let’s not think negatively. Angelo had taken his revenge. Which was his number one goal in his life. But then again, he has a different goal much more important than his own life. That is you.”

I felt something hit my chest as she said the words. “Angelo has a reason to live because of you. I have never seen him go out of his way for a woman before. I knew his feelings for you even before he realized it himself. I don’t think Angelo would ever leave your side. You are everything to him. So let’s hope for the best instead of having negative energy.”

“Thank you, Annie. You are indeed the nicest friend I could ever ask for.”

“Who else would you have as a friend if not me.” She said proudly. I didn’t hold in my chuckle. “I have a friend you know.”

“Who is she? You have never mentioned any friend to me. Who is that?” She nudged me.

“We’ve been friends for a long time but I guess that friendship isn’t strong anymore. Haven’t heard from her for a while. I guess life has thrown us on different paths now. Anyways, I’m glad to have someone like you as a friend.”

Annie flashed out a smile. “If you are really glad then there’s something you need to do for me. Something important.”
