Chapter 44 Rogues
Rogues
Milo’s POV
The sound of my feet crunching on dead leaves of the forest continued to echo in my ears. Trees blur beside me as I run through the thick forests.
I didn’t know where I was going, but I knew that I just needed to get away as far as possible.
Away from all the blood.
Away from the bodies that littered the pack grounds…
and especially away from him.
The look on the man's face as he saw his life flash before his eyes continued to play in my head like a horror movie. Tears continued to fall down my face like a waterfall, obscuring my view.
Every time I think about it, all I see is me, chained, and kneeling in front of master while begging for my life.
I shuddered as the dark thoughts continued to swirl in my mind like a snake, crawling into the deepest part of my mind to stay.
I have never seen him so enraged and angry before. And with a snap, just like that…
Gone.
He had killed a man…right there, right in front of me like I was a piece of trash.
I shook my head to forget about the gruesome image, but another image more gruesome than the one I had just witnessed flashed in my head.
The boy I had seen, standing in the arena. His hands dripped with the fresh blood of the executioner he just murdered.
My stomach twisted.
“No. No, noo, that couldn’t have been me.
I wasn’t that boy, I would never kill an ant, not to talk of killing a man.”
“face the reality milo” Lior whispered in my head.
“Shut the fuck up,” I hissed aloud in frustration. My lungs were burning from too much use.
“You saw it, you felt the power brimming inside you, that's who you are, embrace it and soar higher, Milo.”
“Nonsense nooo!” My voice cracked. I almost fell when I stumbled on a tree back. But I kept on running. A thorn tore through my legs but instead of blood flowing, I could feel my open skin closing at a rapid speed.
“I will never use that power if it will make me be that boy in the arena.” I swore with my heart, immediately shutting my wolf Lior who retreated inside my mind.
My legs ached. My chest felt like it was going to cave in, but I couldn’t stop, not if I wanted to stay alive. I had just witnessed him kill someone in cold blood, and I knew that if I was to be found, public whipping would be the least of my worries.
“He will Sentence us to death.” Lior whimpered sadly in my head.
“He didn't hesitate to kill that man. Just like that. No trial, No mercy.” I cried, my voice still in disbelief.
“That’s who he is,” Lior whispered, defeated, brokened even. but I guess he was holding on from breaking down yet. “He is hiding something from us.”
Tears burned my eyes as I pushed through, running like the hunted thing I had become. I didn’t even know where I was going, only that I had to get away.
From the truth.
From myself
From master
Because I had not obeyed simple instructions, I had eavesdropped on my master who was probably hot in pursuit, after my life now.
And had seen what he looked like when he was enraged
He looked…
Like a demon from hell. And gods help me,
He had looked right at me. With those same dark eyes. And like something I couldn't explain I had felt like I was staring at death's eyes. The next target on his list.
Having no choice, I did the only thing I could do…I ran.
Is that why he was so obsessed with me? Because I was something different…
I had heard it from the man's mouth.
Is that why he had forcefully taken me from my family?
Because I wasn’t like the others?
Because I was some... thing…unknown.
“Milo…”
I ignored my wolf, The fire in my chest grew hotter and more insistently familiar like the one I had felt in the arena. I gritted my teeth and ran harder, faster, pushing past the blur of trees.
“Slow down, Milo,” Lior repeated louder, his words filled with urgency. “You are going too…”
BAM.
The impact came like lightning, knocking the air out of my lungs. For a moment I saw stars.
I had slammed straight right into a thick tree that was big enough to knock a normal wolf out cold. I jerked backward from the force of impact. Crashing to the forest ground.
But there was no pain.
Just a dull throb on where I had made an impact on the tree.
I blinked in confusion, reaching for my rib expecting to wince in pain. I was sure to have some broken ribs from the impact, but none.
I froze,
That’s not right.
But before I could question it…
“WHOOOSH”
The sound of an arrow slicing through the air broke the sound barrier.
I immediately threw myself down, acting on pure instinct, the sharp tip of the arrow merely missing me by a hair's breadth and embedded into the bark of the tree.
I forgot how to breathe totally, my eyes widening as the hot taste of bile rose to my throat.
“Fuck…I can't believe I missed.” A whining sound reached my ears. One thing was sure, I know that the owner of the voice was the one who shot the arrow. And definitely he was not targeting a rabbit when he shot his arrow.
Or maybe I was the rabbit.
I scrambled up to my feet just as several dark figures emerged from the thick bushes, immediately surrounding me.
“You missed,” one muttered to the first voice, as if he couldn't believe his eyes.
“He moved at the last minute. But it doesn't matter. We will break his legs this time.”
My body trembled.
“Boy this is not looking good.” Lior exclaimed in my head.
Wolves.
I could smell them, but I almost gagged when I took a deep whiff. They smelled like rotten wild apples.
They were not like the ones in the pack.
These ones were ragged, and dangerous looking. Their eyes kept on glinting like that of an animal that had seen its prey. Some bared their teeths, drool dropping off like wild dogs.
Rogues!!
