Chapter 259: Forever Starts Now

Damon's POV

Dawn broke slowly, painting our chambers in soft gold and pink light. I watched Milo as he fed Ezra, He was humming softly, one of the lullabies he had taken to singing to our son, and the domestic scene made my chest tight with emotion.

This. This was what I had almost lost.

Milo looked up and caught me staring. A slight blush colored his cheeks… adorable, given what we had done throughout the night.

"What?" he asked, adjusting Ezra in his arms.

"Just... memorizing this," I admitted. "the way the morning light makes your hair glow. The soft smile when you look at Ezra. The contentment I feel through our bond. I never want to forget a single moment."

Milo's expression softened. "You are getting sentimental in your old age, our dearest alpha."

"I am not old," I protested, moving to sit beside them on the bed. "I'm seasoned. There's a difference."

"Mmm, semantics," Milo teased, but he leaned into me when I wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

Ezra finished eating and promptly fell back asleep, his tiny fist curled against Milo's chest. We sat in comfortable silence for a while, just existing together in the peaceful morning.

"I meant it, you know," I said eventually. "About the ceremony. I want to do this properly. Give you everything you deserve."

"I know you did," Milo replied softly. "And I want it too. But Damon... can we keep it small? Intimate? I know as king and alpha we are expected to make these grand public displays, but..."

"But you would rather it be about us than about politics," I finished, understanding immediately. "Of course. Whatever you want. We can do something just for close family..."

Opp, I paused, peering at Milo's face but he nodded smiling.

“It's fine Damon, you can talk about them.” he said, but I could see the slight change in expression. Milo had not talked about his parents since, and it has remained that way… well until now.

Milo said he was okay, but I know deep down he must have been affected by everything.

A soft knock at the door interrupted the moment. Daphne's voice came through, careful but firm. "I know you two probably want privacy, but I need to do Milo's morning examination. And James is here with reports that apparently can't wait."

Milo and I exchanged glances, reality crashing back in. We have had our night… our reconnection, our promises, our pleasure. Now it was time to face the responsibilities that came with our positions.

"Come on in," I called, carefully taking Ezra from Milo so he could make himself presentable.

Daphne entered first, her healer's bag in hand and a knowing smirk on her face. "Someone had an active night," she observed, taking in Milo's disheveled appearance and the very obvious state of the room that was in a mess.

"Can you blame me?" I said unapologetically. "It's been months."

"As long as you didn't injure yourself," Daphne said, directing the comment at Milo. "Your body is still healing from everything. Vigorous activity might have set back your recovery."

"I am fine," Milo assured her, though he did wince slightly as he moved, a sense of pride that had nothing to do with anything at all filled me. "Better than fine, actually. I feel... stronger. More integrated. Like last night helped in a way."

Daphne's clinical interest immediately overcame her amusement. "Interesting. The physical and emotional connection of mating might have helped solidify your integrated powers. Let me check."

While Daphne conducted her examination, james entered with scrolls and reports. I gestured for him to wait, focusing on Daphne's assessment.

"Remarkable," she murmured, her hands glowing with healing magic as she examined Milo's energy patterns. "Your three powers are more balanced than before. Less like three separate entities and more like one unified whole. Whatever you did last night, it helped."

Milo and I exchanged looks, his face heating up, as we remembered what transpired between us. Multiple times. In various positions and with varying intensity.

"Good to know," Milo said, his face still red from embarrassment. "We will ... keep that in mind for future reference."

"Just don't overdo it," Daphne warned. "You are healing well, but you are not invincible. I would prefer you not end up back in my medical wing because you and your mate couldn't control yourselves."

"We have excellent control," I protested.

Daphne raised an eyebrow, gesturing to the very visible marks covering Milo's neck and shoulders. "Clearly."

Marcus cleared his throat, drawing our attention. "As entertaining as this is, we do have actual business to discuss. Several territories have sent follow-up messages after yesterday's council. Most are positive, but there are a few concerns."

The domestic, peaceful bubble burst completely. We were back to being kings and leaders, and all the responsibilities that entailed.

"Let's hear it," Milo said, his posture straightening as he shifted from mate and father to king and omega leader.

Marcus spread out several scrolls on the desk. "Some packs, especially the old packs, are not willing to implement the omega protection law.”

"Let me guess," I said, my mood souring. "They are threatening to break away completely if we try to enforce any centralized authority."

"Essentially, yes," James confirmed.

Milo's expression hardened. "Because they profit from omega exploitation. Selling them, breeding them without consent, treating them as property rather than people."

"Then we make it clear that's not acceptable," I said firmly. "Any territory that wants to be part of this alliance, that wants our protection and support, has to commit to basic omega rights. Non-negotiable."

"We can't force compliance," Milo pointed out, though his expression showed he agreed with the sentiment. "We don't have the authority or the strength to police every territory."

"No, but we can create consequences," I countered. "Territories that comply get access to our resources, our enhanced soldiers for defense, and our trade networks. Those who don't, they are on their own."

Milo considered this, his hand absently going to where Ezra slept in the cradle beside us. I could practically see him thinking about all the omegas who would suffer if we allowed territories to maintain exploitative practices.

"We'll need to be strategic," he finally said. "Start with the territories that are already willing, show them the benefits of the new system. As they thrive, it'll put pressure on the holdouts to join. And if they still refuse..."

"Then we deal with them individually," I finished.

"This is going to take years," James observed. "Changing centuries of tradition and power structures doesn't happen overnight."

"I know," Milo said quietly. "But it has to start somewhere. And if not us, then who?”.

Pride surged through our bond as I looked at my mate. He had died and come back, and survived trauma that would break most wolves. And his first concern was still protecting those weaker than himself.

"You are amazing," I said, not caring that Marcus and Daphne were still in the room.

Milo blushed. "I am just doing what's right."

"Which is exactly what makes you amazing," I insisted.

"Can you two be disgustingly in love later?" James asked, though his tone was fond. "We still have actual work to do."

We spent the next hour going through reports and making decisions about various pack matters. Trade agreements, border disputes, requests for aid from smaller territories. The kind of mundane but necessary work that went into running a kingdom.

Ezra woke halfway through, demanding attention with a cry that immediately had both Milo and me on our feet. I couldn't help but smile at how synchronized we'd become as parents, working together to change and feed and soothe our son.

"He's gotten bigger," Daphne observed, checking Ezra over with practiced efficiency. "Growing well. The mixed alpha-omega heritage is already showing in interesting ways."

"Like what?" Milo asked, worry creeping into his voice.

"Nothing bad," Daphne assured him quickly. "Just unusual. His energy signature shifts between alpha and omega traits fluidly. Most wolves develop a clear identity by this age, but Ezra seems comfortable with both aspects of his nature. It's actually quite beautiful, if unexpected."

"Will it cause problems?" I asked. "With other wolves, I mean. Not being clearly alpha or omega?"

"Possibly," Daphne admitted. "Some traditionalists won't know how to categorize him, which might lead to resistance or prejudice. But given who his parents are, I suspect anyone who tries to make an issue of it will regret the decision."

She wasn't wrong. Any wolf who threatened or bullied my son would have to answer to both his father… a powerful alpha… and his papa… an omega king who'd absorbed demonic and divine power. Not to mention the entire pack of enhanced soldiers who had already pledged loyalty to our family.

"He will be fine," Milo said, more to himself than anyone else. "We will make sure of it. Teach him to be proud of all aspects of himself, not ashamed of being different."

"Just like someone else I know," I said pointedly, squeezing Milo's shoulder.

He smiled up at me. "Exactly like that
