CHAPTER 114: The Edge of the Blade.
CHAPTER 114: The Edge of the Blade.
Serena’s POV
Adrian does not speak immediately. He stands beside the laptop with the Prophet’s second message still glowing across the screen, and the light reflects across the sharp lines of his face.
Matteo is still recovering from the moment when the image of the Prophet’s agent appeared behind him in the corridor view. He is breathing hard, bent slightly forward with his palms braced on the table, but Adrian’s attention is locked entirely on me. His gaze runs over my expression as if he is measuring whether I have absorbed the implication behind the Prophet’s words.
The picture on the screen shows a shadowed figure standing in the same rooftop position we found earlier, and the red writing beneath it reads that this time the Prophet will not aim for my past but will aim for the part of me that Adrian has already claimed.
The phrasing is calculated to provoke him. It is designed to push him to an emotional place where he is predictable. Adrian studies it without blinking, his jaw tight with a control that feels like a thread pulled far too thin.
When I step closer, my hand brushes the side of the table. He reaches for me instinctively, his fingers circling my wrist with a heat that sends a shiver down my spine.
The contact is firm, grounding, and charged with an intensity that coils deep inside my body. He draws me nearer until I stand directly in front of him. Matteo watches from the corner with a silent awareness that this moment is not one he should interrupt and after a second, he turns away to focus on the other screens. Adrian keeps his hand on my wrist, but his eyes lift to meet mine fully.
He tells me in a low, even tone that the Prophet is escalating faster than expected. The fact that he infiltrated Matteo’s blind spot is not a demonstration of skill but a demonstration of proximity.
The Prophet is closer to us than any of us realized, and he is tightening the circle around the compound with the kind of patience that signals precision rather than desperation. Adrian’s voice remains calm, but I can hear the controlled anger beneath it. It is not the reckless fury he once carried. It is a colder version, tempered by experience and sharpened into something lethal.
I remind him that the Prophet’s message is not only tactical. It is psychological. He is trying to fracture Adrian by using me as the pressure point. Adrian’s grip on my wrist tightens slightly, not enough to hurt but enough to make my pulse throb against his skin.
He steps even closer, closing the space between our bodies until I can feel the warmth radiating from him. He tells me that the Prophet has underestimated the one thing Adrian cannot lose. I feel his breath brush my lower lip as he speaks, each word dripping with a heat that curls deep inside me.
Before either of us can move further, Matteo calls Adrian’s name. A new window has opened on the central feed. The Prophet appears again, standing at the same fence they breached earlier. This time, he is not silent. He is speaking directly into the camera.
He explains that the message on the roof was only the first stage. The second stage involves a list of names that he claims to have collected from deep inside Adrian’s operations. They are names of men who will turn if put under pressure. The Prophet claims he has already applied that pressure.
One of the names on the list is a man who has served Adrian for several years, someone who once handled the logistics during foreign extractions. Adrian’s body stiffens when he sees the name, although he masks the reaction instantly.
He tells Matteo to trace the signal. Matteo is already moving, sliding between consoles with the practiced speed of someone who has lived his life in shadows. I watch Adrian instead. His fingers release my wrist only to settle on my hip, as though grounding himself in the contact.
The pressure is slow and deliberate, and my breath catches in a way I cannot hide. He notices the reaction, and the intensity in his eyes deepens.
He tells me that the Prophet is beginning to isolate the people closest to him. He also tells me that this is exactly what he expected, but the mention of this particular name makes the situation more personal than he anticipated.
I ask him whether the man is likely to betray him. Adrian answers with a dry, calculated tone. He says that men who fight beside him for long enough either develop loyalty that cannot be broken or resentment that cannot be contained. The Prophet is attempting to exploit that resentment.
Matteo lifts his head and announces that the signal is bouncing through multiple nodes, all positioned within twenty kilometers of the compound. The Prophet is deliberately masking his location but ensuring we know he is close.
Adrian removes his hand from my hip long enough to pick up a weapon from the table. His movements are smooth and deliberate. When he turns back to me, he steps close once again, and the air between us thickens with the heat that has been simmering since the rooftop.
He tells me we need to check the outer perimeter personally. His voice lowers as he adds that he does not want me out of his sight while the Prophet is targeting me directly.
There is a fierce claim in the way he says it, and my pulse jumps again. I nod, and he takes my arm, guiding me toward the exit. His grip is strong, steady, and possessive in a way that makes my breath deepen involuntarily. Matteo follows a few steps behind.
The walk through the corridor is filled with the quiet hum of distant alarms. Several men stand along the walls, their expressions grim and tense.
They straighten as Adrian passes. Some of them look at me with questions in their eyes, but none of them speak. Adrian’s hand remains on me, either on my arm or at the small of my back. The contact is constant, as though he is unwilling to allow any distance while the Prophet is attempting to provoke him.
We reach the courtyard. The night air is cool, and the lights along the fence cast long shadows across the ground. Adrian signals to two guards to remain at the entrance while he leads me across the open space. Matteo circles to the left, checking the blind spots.
Adrian moves with alert precision, but I can feel the heat beneath his composure. The tension is not only tactical. It is personal, sharpened by the Prophet’s intent to use me as leverage.
When we reach the northern perimeter, Adrian stops. He tells Matteo to check the tower while he surveys the fence. I stand beside him, close enough that our shoulders nearly touch.
He looks at me with a heat that feels like it belongs in a room with closed doors instead of a compound under threat. He tells me quietly that the Prophet made a mistake by declaring his intentions so openly.
He should have remained in the shadows. Adrian’s voice lowers as he adds that nothing provokes him more than someone attempting to harm what he considers his.
The last word sends a slow, molten heat through my body, but before I can respond, a soft electronic click cuts through the air. Matteo turns sharply toward the sound.
It is coming from the service shed near the outer wall. Adrian gestures for Matteo to position himself near the entrance, and he pulls me closer before moving. His hand rests on my back, guiding me with a possessive steadiness that makes every nerve in my body tighten.
He opens the shed door. The interior is dark except for a faint blinking red light. Matteo reaches for the switch, and when the light flickers on, we see a small device resting on a shelf. It is not explosive. It is a transmitter. Adrian steps forward to inspect it. The device is linked to a camera positioned somewhere inside the compound. It is feeding footage directly to the Prophet.
