CHAPTER 113: THE SECOND MESSAGE.
CHAPTER 113: THE SECOND MESSAGE.
Serena POV.
The moment Adrian stops at the threshold of the rooftop, the air around us alters in a way that feels almost physical, as if some invisible pressure is settling over the concrete.
The black box sits exactly where the Prophet intended, positioned with a deliberate precision that makes my bones tighten. The device is silent, but the phone taped on top glows with the same quiet intent that marked the last phase of his plan.
Adrian does not move at first, and neither do I. The wind picks up around us, sweeping traces of dust across the rooftop, but neither of us pays attention to anything except the box.
I step closer, but Adrian reaches back and catches my wrist. His grip is firm, not forceful, but absolute enough to tell me that he is not willing to risk even a minor miscalculation.
His eyes remain on the box, narrowing as if he is reading every angle, every potential trigger, every hidden line of a trap set by someone who knows how he thinks. The Prophet is not simply taunting us. He is pacing us, matching his steps with ours, and at this point, the strategy has shifted into something more intimate than simple war.
Matteo arrives a moment later with two of the perimeter guards behind him. He stops the second he sees the device. The tension in his shoulders tells me that whatever he feared earlier has now crystallized into something concrete.
He looks at Adrian first, then at me, as if gauging whether either of us will attempt to approach the box before the security team can assess it. Adrian speaks before anyone else has the chance.
“Confirm the signal and the trigger radius. No one touches it.” His voice is calm, but beneath the surface, there is a current of restrained violence that has not yet found an outlet.
One of the guards moves forward with a compact scanner. As he lowers the device toward the box, the phone screen changes without warning. The display brightens and a new message appears. There is no sound at all, only the slow fade of the previous text into the next one, as if the Prophet prepared this moment in advance and has been waiting for our eyes to land on the screen.
This one is even simpler. “There is another,” Matteo swears quietly. Adrian steps forward by a single measured pace, pulling me with him as if he expects the box to be only part of a sequence, not the centerpiece of the threat.
The guard finishes scanning and confirms that the device is transmitting but not active. The silence that follows the confirmation is filled with an uncomfortable layer of calculation. The Prophet does not waste words and he does not leave empty warnings. If he says there is another, then there is.
Adrian’s attention shifts to the edges of the rooftop, to the sightlines extending over the compound walls, to the path the Prophet had taken when he left the gate earlier. He analyzes everything so quickly that I can almost feel the gears in his mind turning. When he speaks, the decision is already formed.
“We sweep the perimeter. Every outbuilding, every vehicle, every roof. No exceptions.” He turns to Matteo. “Start from the service wing. That is where he wants us to look first.”
Matteo nods and disappears through the stairwell with the guards. Adrian releases my wrist only when he is certain the team has begun moving. For a moment, he remains completely still, watching the black box as if reading something beyond the visible device. When he finally turns toward me, the severity of his expression softens, but not enough to hide the weight he is carrying.
“You saw it before the rest of us,” he says in a low voice. “What do you think he wants now?”
I draw a steady breath. I refuse to answer blindly, because the Prophet thrives on instinctive reactions. He expects impulsive responses, especially from me. But I have learned. Every move he makes now seems designed to exploit the cracks forming across the Disciples, to pry open whatever loyalty remains between Adrian and the men who once followed him without hesitation.
“He is creating the illusion that we are already behind him,” I say. “He wants us chasing the wrong threat while he prepares the real one.”
Adrian studies my face with careful attention. “Then what is the real one?”
I look at the box again.
The Prophet had addressed the first message to me, not Adrian. This second one, however, is no longer personal. It is strategic. He is trying to move us across the board in a direction only he can predict. The real threat may not be another device. It might be a shift in loyalty, a fracture in the ranks, a moment when someone Adrian trusts steps into the wrong place at the wrong time.
“He wants you questioning your men,” I answer quietly. “He wants them questioning you.”
Adrian exhales slowly, not in frustration but in acknowledgment. The truth of my words sits heavily between us. For several seconds, neither of us speaks. The silence is not empty. It is layered with unspoken memories, old betrayals and internal scars that shaped both of us long before the Prophet emerged as a threat.
The phone screen changes again. This time, it does not show words. It shows an image.
At first, the pixels shift and blur, then the picture sharpens into clarity. I feel my stomach tighten. The photo is taken from an angle just above the compound gate, as if captured by a hidden lens. It shows the courtyard two hours earlier, before the alarms sounded.
The frame is wide enough to include both the vehicles near the garage and the walkway leading toward the main house. There are only three figures in the image. One is Adrian, just stepping out of the SUV. The second is me, turning toward him.
The third is a man standing behind us, almost directly under the shadow of the balcony. His posture is relaxed but attentive, his gaze fixed on us rather than the entrance.
I recognize him immediately, Jonas, Adrian’s former lieutenant, the defector. The Prophet’s closest ally.
The message beneath the photo appears in sharp white letters.
“He has already been inside.”
The rooftop seems to tilt slightly, not in motion but in understanding. The Prophet was not threatening to infiltrate the compound. He already had. Perhaps not physically, perhaps not today, but Jonas had once been trusted enough to move freely through every corner of Adrian’s life.
If the Prophet held Jonas, he held access to every weakness, every blind spot, every habit formed during the years before the split. The realization lands with a weight that pushes air from my lungs.
Adrian’s jaw locks. Not with panic. Not with fear. With something far colder. Jonas’s betrayal is no longer a distant wound. It is a living threat standing at the center of the Prophet’s strategy.
Matteo’s voice erupts through the comms in that exact moment. I hear shouting in the background, along with the heavy movement of multiple guards. Matteo’s words come fast and clipped.
“We found it. Northern roof tier. Another device. This one is armed.”
Adrian does not waste a second. He turns toward the stairwell and signals for the guards. I follow him without hesitation. The pace he sets is unrelenting. We descend the rooftop stairs and take the first corridor at a near run. Every sound in the compound has changed. The calm before has turned into a focused urgency. Men are moving, orders are being shouted, doors are being checked and secured.
At the end of the hallway, Matteo meets us and gestures sharply toward the north wing ladder leading to the secondary roof tier. “It is smaller than the first one,” he says. “But it is active.”
Adrian takes the ladder in three strides. Matteo follows, and I go after them. The second device is positioned near the far corner, angled just enough to be seen from the fence line. The phone attached to the top is counting upward rather than downward, as if measuring the time since it was activated. The number already shows more than twenty minutes.
Adrian leans close enough to study the structure without crossing the threshold of the potential trigger. The guard beside him begins scanning again. I watch the phone screen, waiting for the inevitable shift. It comes sooner than expected.
The display flashes once, then stabilizes. The message is shorter this time. “Good. You found the easy one.”
Adrian stands completely still. The muscles in his shoulders grow tense, not with uncertainty, but with a level of control so severe that even his breathing becomes deliberate. He is processing the information with a precision that borders on brutal. Matteo waits for instructions, but Adrian does not speak immediately. The quiet becomes an extension of the threat itself.
Then the phone flashes again. A new line replaces the previous one.
“Ask her what you missed.”
My heart jolts. Adrian slowly turns his head toward me, meeting my eyes with an intensity that is not accusation, not suspicion, but something far more complex. The Prophet is trying to insert doubt between us.
He is trying to use me as the opening. Adrian knows it. I know it. The difference now is that I see the connection the Prophet is drawing.
“There were two men in the photo,” I say quietly. “Not just Jonas. Look again.”
Adrian lowers himself slightly to view the image once more. Matteo moves closer. The guard angles the screen so we can all see it clearly. Jonas stands in the foreground. But behind him, reflected faintly in the balcony glass, is the outline of another figure. The shape is blurred, but the height, the stance and the slight tilt of the head are all too familiar.
It is one of Adrian’s current inner-circle Disciples.
Someone who has not defected yet. My chest tightens with a slow, spreading cold.
The Prophet is not only attacking from outside the walls. He is building his influence from within.
Adrian sees it at the same moment I do. The realization strikes him with the same force, but unlike me, he does not allow the shock to take even a fraction of hold. He locks the reaction down instantly and steps back from the device.
“Get the team ready,” he orders. “We are isolating every high-ranking Disciple until we confirm loyalty.”
Matteo nods and signals to the guards. But before he can send the order through comms, the phone on the device flashes again. The new message is only three words. “You are too late.”
A second later, the rooftop alarm erupts with a piercing, continuous tone.
The moment it starts, every guard in the compound turns toward the northern wall.
Someone is already climbing over it and it is not the Prophet. It is one of Adrian’s own men. He is carrying a weapon. He is coming into the compound rather than leaving it. His first target is Adrian. The second is me.
