CHAPTER 103: THE PROPHET’S ULTIMATUM.
CHAPTER 103: THE PROPHET’S ULTIMATUM.
Adrian's POV
The conference room that once served as the inner sanctum of my most loyal men feels different tonight. The lights cast an amber glow over the long mahogany table and every man seated around it carries the shape of conflict behind his eyes.
The schism has not fully torn us apart, but the cracks have deepened enough that every whisper now sounds like a threat. The Prophet’s message still hangs in the air, replaying in my head with a clarity that borders on violation.
He understands my strategies because he built some of them beside me, and he understands my weaknesses because I trusted him with the ones I never revealed to anyone else. The video he sent, with his calm voice stating that he intended to dismantle everything I built, strikes deeper than any bullet could.
I steady myself before I speak, allowing my voice to cut across the room with enough command to quiet every doubtful thought. I tell my men that we will answer the threat directly, cleanly and without the emotional impulsiveness that the Prophet hopes to provoke.
While some at the table exchange uneasy glances, none of them voices disagreement. If they oppose me, they will do so in shadows, not in this room and that reality tightens the air like a storm gathering behind a sealed window.
A knock echoes through the hallway, soft but assertive. I do not need to look to know it is Serena. I feel her presence moving toward me long before she enters, because every instinct in me responds to her with an intensity I can no longer deny or restrain.
When she steps inside, her posture is straight and composed, yet her eyes reveal a tension that matches the one rolling through my veins. She offers a polite nod to the men in the room and walks to my side with a level of confidence that makes several of them shift uncomfortably. They know her power even if they refuse to fully acknowledge it.
Once the door closes behind the last adviser, Serena and I are alone in the room that now feels charged with an entirely different kind of energy. She does not approach immediately; instead, she surveys the room as if assessing whether anything has changed since she was last here.
Only when she catches my gaze does she step closer, and the scent of her perfume carries the warmth of amber and shadowed desire. She places her tablet on the table and opens the encrypted file she decrypted earlier, the one that contained the Prophet’s true intention.
The words she reads aloud are deliberate and controlled, yet every phrase thickens the tension between us. The Prophet is not seeking to destroy me directly; he intends to dismantle the structure around me, my alliances, my financial foundations and the loyalty of the Disciples who have followed me for years.
He wants to break the system that holds me in place, leaving me exposed and forced to bleed from every direction at once. Serena’s voice remains steady, but her expression sharpens when she reaches the end of the file.
“He believes you will hesitate to strike back because you still see him as the man you trained beside,” she says calmly, though I can see the heat behind her eyes.
“He is counting on sentiment to slow you down.” I step toward her until the distance between us shrinks into something intimate and electric. The glow from the overhead lights warms her features, turning the gold of her irises into something fierce and alive.
I tell her quietly that sentiment no longer has a place in this war. The moment the Prophet chose to betray me, he severed all the pieces of humanity that once existed between us.
Serena studies me for a long, intense moment, her gaze sliding across my face with a softness that contrasts sharply with the war outside these walls. She tells me she believes me, but her voice holds a note of warning beneath the surface.
She knows that betrayal from someone who once held my trust will not disappear from my system without leaving scars that demand recognition. She steps even closer and although she maintains a composed posture, her breath brushes my chest with a heat that sends a pulse of desire through me.
My hand rises instinctively, but I stop myself just before I touch her jaw. She notices the restraint, and the awareness in her eyes shifts into something darkly sensual.
She does not move away; she simply holds herself steady, allowing the tension to build between us in a slow, deliberate burn. I tell her that I need her insight for what comes next, because the Prophet’s psychological warfare is as dangerous as his tactical assault.
She nods, her eyelashes lowering slightly as she looks at the screen again.
Before she can speak, my phone vibrates sharply on the table. The number flashing on the screen belongs to Luca, one of the few men whose loyalty I do not question.
When I answer, his voice is tight and urgent. The Prophet just made another move. A warehouse in the docks, one of mine, has been raided with precision that mirrors my own strategies. My men fought back, but the Prophet’s recruits knew the patterns, the escape routes and even the blind corners. This confirms everything: he is using my training against me.
The moment I end the call, I notice that Serena has stepped nearer, close enough that the heat of her body radiates into mine. She tells me we need to move quickly before the Prophet gains more ground.
Her tone holds a tension that is not entirely strategic; it carries the weight of personal stakes she has not fully voiced.
I ask her what she is not telling me, and she hesitates for a moment before admitting that the Prophet included an additional encrypted layer in his message. She decrypted it but has not had time to analyze it fully. It appears to contain information about the night her mother disappeared, details too precise to be a coincidence.
Her breath catches slightly when she says it, and I feel something tighten inside me in response. The Prophet is not only coming for me; he is reaching for her past as well and I am not certain which threat infuriates me more. I step forward and place my hand lightly, deliberately, on the small of her back.
She exhales softly, her posture shifting in a way that betrays the effect my touch has on her. Her eyes lift to meet mine with a mixture of fire and vulnerability that strikes directly into my chest.
I tell her that the Prophet will not use her past as a weapon. She replies that he already is, and that the best way to stop him is to strike first. The intensity in her voice grows thicker, sliding through the air like a heated confession. She does not pull away from my touch; instead, she leans subtly into it, as if grounding herself against the storm gathering outside this room.
We gather the files, weapons, and communication devices before heading downstairs. The compound feels colder tonight and the men stationed in the hallways watch us with expressions that reveal the strain of choosing sides.
The schism has not erupted into open conflict yet, but I can sense it coiling beneath the surface. Serena walks beside me with a steady pace, her presence both calming and electrically charged. When we reach the garage, the car already waits for us and the engine hums with a readiness that mirrors my own rising tension.
