CHAPTER 102: THE PROPHET’S REIGN.
CHAPTER 102: THE PROPHET’S REIGN.
Serena - Adrian POV
SERENA
The villa feels as though it has been carved open and left to bleed across its own marble floors. The aftermath of the near-kill shot lingers in every corridor, creating an atmosphere that vibrates with a kind of restrained panic none of Adrian’s men want to acknowledge aloud. The shattered column on the balcony is still shedding dust onto the ground like falling snow, stubbornly releasing its final grains of stone even though the attack is over. The bullet embedded deep inside its core has been removed and taken away for analysis, but that does not erase the image of how close it came to piercing Adrian’s skull.
Men rush through the halls carrying weapons, ammunition, communication devices, and hastily bandaged wounds. Their faces carry the unmistakable look of soldiers who have realized their enemy is not an outsider but someone wearing the same training, the same discipline, and the same brand of fear behind their eyes. The villa echoes with orders being shouted down the hallways, footsteps pounding against stone, and the strained static of comms struggling to keep up with the flood of updates.
Adrian walks beside me with controlled calm that he forces into existence through sheer willpower. His face is composed and unreadable to everyone except me, and even I can only see the sharp tension in the way he holds his breath a fraction longer than normal or how his fingers curl briefly at his sides when no one is watching. The men around us watch him like they are trying to determine whether their leader is unshaken or if the bullet’s near-impact has unsettled him in ways they fear to name. He gives them nothing in return.
What they do not understand is that the bullet was not the wound.
The split was.
The moment the shot hit the stone behind him, several Disciples dropped to one knee in allegiance, reaffirming their loyalty with an almost desperate fierceness. At the same time, others rose to their feet with a cold resolve that betrayed a different allegiance—one they had secretly nurtured in private shadows and hidden corners of this same villa. Their choice was delivered in a single name they pronounced with uncompromising conviction: the Prophet.
No one whispered it.
They declared it.
I had heard the name only sparingly before now, but the weight with which they spoke it revealed everything I needed to know. This man was not a myth or a long-buried entity. He was very real, very close, and very familiar. The Prophet was not an outsider who had climbed his way into the ranks; he was someone who had once stood beside Adrian as a trusted brother.
A man who knew his strategies.
A man who understood his mind.
A man who had once formed the other half of Adrian’s battlefield instincts and had learned every edge, angle, and vulnerability Adrian possessed.
A man who had chosen to turn that knowledge into a weapon.
The betrayal was not fresh. It was old, cultivated, and perfectly timed.
As we walk into the war room, I feel that truth press against the air like a storm front preparing to break.
The large screen displays multiple zones of the city in a grid-like formation, each one marked with colored indicators reflecting movement, conflicts, captured communications, and presumed loyalties. Red marks spread across the map like a spreading infection. The northern barracks, the supply depot outside the city, and the old training grounds have all switched alignment. Adrian’s men stand around the table while attempting to hide their unease.
One of the analysts steps forward with a tablet clutched tightly in his hand. “The situation has escalated. The northern barracks have pledged themselves entirely to the Prophet. They’ve issued a demand for your surrender or civil engagement.”
Adrian studies the analyst with a calm that is almost unnerving. “There will be engagement,” he replies, and I hear the silent promise beneath his voice—he intends to end this before the Prophet builds any more momentum.
The analyst nods, although the tension in his jaw indicates he expected the answer but prayed for something else.
Adrian turns away from the map and lets out a slow breath that barely escapes his lips. It is not a sigh. It is a controlled release of fury he does not want to unleash yet. I move closer until his shoulder nearly brushes against mine, offering presence rather than comfort.
“He wanted them divided,” Adrian says quietly to me. “He wanted them afraid. And he wanted a demonstration that would make them believe I could die as easily as any man.”
“He wanted to calculate your reaction,” I say. “He wanted to prove that fear belongs to him now.”
Adrian does not need to respond; the rigid line across his shoulders is enough.
A second tech rushes into the room with urgency thick in his steps. “We intercepted a message from the Prophet. It was addressed directly to you.”
Adrian turns to him. “Play it.”
The screen flickers before filling with a voice that carries the chilling composure of a man who believes he has already won. The Prophet speaks with the kind of slow precision that suggests every word has been chosen with intention.
“Adrian. This was never your reign. You were borrowing it without realizing it.”
Adrian’s men shift uncomfortably. The Prophet’s voice continues, unwavering.
“You built an empire dependent on loyalty. But loyalty built on fear fractures the moment the source of fear shifts. The Disciples are not abandoning you because they are weak. They are choosing me because you trained them to survive.”
A quiet laugh follows.
“And survival means following the man who does not flinch when a bullet grazes his throat.”
The transmission ends abruptly.
The silence afterward weighs heavily on everyone, including Adrian. He stands without moving for a long moment, and although he does not say a word, I can sense the cold shock inside him. I place my hand lightly on his arm, and the moment I do, he draws in a deeper breath as though grounding himself in that single touch.
“He wants you rattled,” I say. “He wants you doubting the men who still stand with you.”
Adrian lifts his gaze toward me slowly. “He was my brother,” he says, and the depth of devastation in his voice is the closest he has ever come to sounding wounded.
I do not step away from him. “He stopped being your brother the moment he pointed those men at you.”
Before he can reply, alarms ring through the hallway.
A guard shouts from the doorway, “We have a breach on the east wing! ”
Adrian turns sharply toward the hall. The Prophet has begun his next move.
The east wing is a narrow corridor lined with tall windows and thick support beams. The scent of dust mingles with the sharp tang of smoke drifting in from the shattered glass. Gunfire reverberates off the walls, creating an echo that blurs into a continuous roar.
Adrian positions himself in front of me as we advance, his body acting as a deliberate shield even though I carry my own firearm. He does not tell me to stay behind him, yet I understand the instinct. I move with heightened awareness, keeping my weapon raised at an angle that mirrors his.
When the first attacker emerges from behind a fallen tapestry, Adrian reacts with lethal precision. His shot is perfectly placed, dropping the man before he touches the ground. The second attacker attempts to flank us from the left, but I fire before he can close the distance. Adrian glances at me briefly; the acknowledgment in his eyes is a mix of gratitude and something far more personal.
As the attack slows, the remaining hostile Disciples retreat toward a different wing, leaving behind a trail of bullet casings and the aftermath of a confrontation that has barely begun.
One of Adrian’s loyal men signals for us to follow him into the study. The room feels unfamiliar despite its handsome shelves and heavy wooden desk. Adrian’s presence once dominated this space, but now it feels invaded. A single black envelope rests atop the desk, its surface bearing a symbol drawn in ink, a circle split down the center.
Adrian opens it without hesitation. The message inside contains a few words, but each one carries profound intent: YOU BUILT AN EMPIRE THAT BLEEDS YOU. I BUILT AN EMPIRE THAT FOLLOWS ME.
CHOOSE YOUR END.
Another line sits at the bottom: TONIGHT. PIER 32. COME ALONE.
OR I TAKE YOUR DISCIPLES, EVERYTHING FROM YOU.
Adrian’s jaw hardens. The Prophet has not requested a confrontation; he has staged one. “Do not go alone,” I say. “I have to,” Adrian replies.
“You do not,” I insist. “He expects you to.”
Adrian turns to me fully this time, and the intensity in his eyes nearly pulls the breath from my lungs. “He knows everything about me, Serena. He knows what I fear, what I trust, and what I protect. He is planning for me to bring you.”
“He is planning for you to fall into his hands without a fight,” I respond. “And if you go alone, you will be giving him exactly what he wants.”
We stare at one another in a silence filled with more words than either of us can speak. After a long moment, Adrian lowers his head slightly and nods once in surrender.
“You come,” he says quietly, “but you stay behind cover unless I call for you.” “This is our agreement,” I answer.
ADRIAN
The night air at Pier 32 carries the smell of cold seawater, rusted machinery, and fuel leaking from some forgotten boat engine. Fog moves over the dock in uneven waves, softening the sharp lines of the warehouses but offering no true concealment.
The men positioned behind us blend into the shadows at a distance, ready to intervene if necessary. Serena moves with me but remains behind the container I indicated, watching the approach with a controlled readiness that speaks to her evolving instincts.
The prophet emerges through the fog with an unchanged posture and a perfectly steady stride. His eyes meet mine with the same unspoken familiarity that used to be a sign of trust, but now it feels like a knife I did not see being raised until it was already pressed against my throat.
We stop several feet apart.
He studies me with a faint, bitter smile. “It is good to see you alive.”
“You aimed to change that,” I reply.
“If I had aimed to kill you, I would have,” he answers, not with arrogance but with certainty born from fact. “I needed to show your men that their leader can be shaken.”
“The only thing that shook was their patience for your absence,” I say.
His expression tightens before smoothing again.
“I came to give you a chance to walk away before the entire empire sees you fall,” he says. “You taught me everything I know. Now I will teach you how it feels to lose everything you built.”
Before I can respond, Serena’s voice cuts sharply through my comm.
“Adrian, check the left rooftop immediately.”
I turn my head just in time to see the glint of a rifle scope catching the faint light from the pier. A sniper hidden behind an old ventilation unit aims his weapon at me. I throw myself behind a crate as the bullet strikes the metal surface with enough force to send fragments into the air.
When I look back toward the Prophet, he is already retreating into the shadows of the dockyard.
Dozens of men emerge behind him with disciplined coordination, each one armed and positioned for a full confrontation. They move with precision that reflects the training I once provided. The sight of them forming a united front against me creates a cold pressure in my chest that I force myself to ignore.
Serena’s breath catches over the comm. “This is not a negotiation. This is a declaration.”
“It is,” I reply. The Prophet raises his hand to signal his men, and they begin spreading across the pier in an efficient formation. His voice rises above the fog and machinery. “Tonight marks the beginning of the end. For you, this is the night your crown breaks.”
He lowers his hand in a commanding gesture. “Kill him.” The pier erupts into chaos, but this time, I am ready.
