Chapter 100
When we were having dinner together, I told Kane about Nina and Bandel.
Kane casually picked up a piece of bell pepper and chewed it slowly.
He nodded, "Sounds good. We haven't hung out together yet anyway, and it'll be a great chance for those two to get closer."
I nodded in agreement.
After dinner, I started gathering everything up.
Although Kane had said before not to worry about it, leaving all these lunch boxes and trash here just didn't feel right to me.
Just as I had everything packed up, Bandel walked in again.
He nodded slightly at me, then said to Kane, "Ms. Katherine's birthday is coming up, and they've already sent the invitation."
I saw Kane's eyebrows furrow slightly, with a hint of displeasure in his expression.
I couldn't help but feel curious - who was Ms. Katherine?
Could it be another situation like Scarlett, someone Kane had a past with?
My thoughts never escaped Kane.
He reached out and flicked my forehead.
"What are you thinking? Ms. Katherine is Scarlett's mother."
My eyes widened as I asked, "So she's inviting Kane to her birthday party to keep trying to match Kane and Scarlett?"
But I didn't think that was it. People in their high society circles definitely cared a lot about reputation.
Now that Kane was married to me, they shouldn't be letting Scarlett keep in touch with Kane while we were still married.
Otherwise, if word got out, it would hurt Scarlett's reputation, too.
I asked, "So are you going?"
Kane's eyes darkened, and he nodded, "Of course I'm going."
After saying that, as if worried I'd misunderstand, he turned to look at me, his voice becoming gentle.
"There are two main reasons I need to go. One is to make things clear to them and tell Scarlett to stop bothering me. Two, they've been doing some things that cross the line lately, and I need to warn them."
I didn't really understand business matters, so I just nodded without saying much.
Kane looked at me, his eyes gentle but also a bit testing, "Will this make you unhappy?"
I smiled and shook my head, "Of course I won't be unhappy about this."
For me, Kane being willing to honestly explain his reasons was enough.
I saw Kane let out a breath, with a hint of a smile in his eyes.
I asked, "Can I go with you?"
A moment of hesitation appeared in Kane's eyes.
Worried I'd misunderstand his hesitation, he quickly said, "Most of the people there will be friends of their family, and they're all in the mafia. I'm worried you'll feel uncomfortable."
I gently shook my head and hugged Kane's arm, saying, "As your wife, I have to face some things eventually. I can't hide behind you forever."
Just like this time - Scarlett had come right up to challenge me, and I still thought she was helping me.
Kane looked at my serious expression and broke into a smile.
He pulled me into his arms, his tone still gentle and firm, "I can protect you for the rest of your life, but if you want to learn to face the storms, I'll also provide you with the best shelter so you won't get hurt."
I knew Kane was someone who absolutely kept his word.
I looked up and met his eyes, happiness rippling in mine, "Okay, I trust you."
After I said that, Kane finally raised his head and looked at Bandel beside us, "Go reply to Ms. Katherine that I'll be there on time."
It hit me then, and my face flushed hot.
I'd been talking to Kane and forgot Bandel was still there. I wondered if Bandel would tell Nina about this.
I pressed my lips together, my expression a bit awkward.
But Bandel acted as if nothing had happened, nodded lightly, and left the office.
I pulled on Kane's hand, a bit embarrassed in my tone, "Will Bandel laugh at me?"
Kane raised an eyebrow, his expression showing an unquestionable attitude.
"How could he laugh at you? You're my wife, and besides, once he's in a relationship himself, he'll probably be even more lovey-dovey than us."
The image of Bandel and Nina together flashed through my mind, and I couldn't help but smile.
I stayed in the office keeping Kane company while he worked for a while.
Though I said I was keeping him company, I basically didn't do anything except play on my phone.
Suddenly, I saw a new account adding me as a friend.
I clicked on it and saw the profile picture was an unfamiliar girl, about my age.
I felt confused.
How did someone I don't know find my account?
But I still clicked accept.
I was about to ask who she was when her message came through: [You're my sister Sonya, right?]
I blinked, and a possibility flashed through my mind.
Could she be Camilla's daughter?
I quickly replied: [Yes, I'm Sonya. Are you Camilla's daughter?]
The other person replied quickly too: [Yes, I'm Emily. I'm so glad to get in touch with you now. I hope I'm not bothering you.]
[Of course not. Is there something wrong?]
The other person hesitated for a long time before sending a message - a photo.
After seeing what was in the photo, my pupils shook violently.
Camilla, who had been healthy at my house, was now lying in a hospital bed, and from the environment, it looked like some shabby little clinic.
I got anxious and immediately typed: [What happened? She was fine when she left this afternoon, wasn't she? How did this happen?]
The other person sent a long text, and I read through it with shaking hands.
It was Luca again!
Turns out Luca had given Camilla my address, wanting her to come trick me out of some money.
But Camilla couldn't bear to do it.
She knew, of course, that the money Luca wanted wasn't much - for me now, it could even be considered very little.
But after seeing me and seeing my father's features in me, she couldn't bear to trick me. She just hoped Kane and I could live our own lives without being bothered anymore.
So she didn't do what Luca told her to.
Luca beat her up for it, and even took what little money she had.
I gasped, and the noise caught Kane's attention.
He looked up at me, his voice low as he asked, "What's wrong, honey?"
I told Kane everything about Camilla and Luca.
Kane's eyebrows furrowed tightly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light.
"Dear Sonya, why didn't you tell me about this earlier? Don't you trust me?"
I could see the hurt in Kane's eyes, and I quickly shook my head.
"I just thought I could handle it myself. I didn't expect Luca to be so terrible."
