Chapter 92
Kane looked at James, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Having never seen Kane like this before, James couldn't help but rub the goosebumps that had popped up on his arms.
"Please, stop it. I'd rather watch you chop off two people's heads right in front of me. You're acting like a demon possesses you."
Only James would dare joke with Kane like this or speak to him in such a tone.
Kane dropped his smile and shot James a cold look.
"Before you try to exorcise me, I'll pull out your tongue first."
James immediately pretended to zip his mouth shut, pulling up an imaginary zipper, then spread his hands innocently at Kane.
Kane looked away and said to Bandel nearby, "Take care of Ryan's situation. I don't want to see him again."
Bandel nodded, a flash of murderous intent crossing his eyes.
After dealing with Ryan's matter, Kane finally returned to the estate. By then, it was almost dawn.
He tiptoed back to the room and saw Sonya sleeping soundly in bed, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly again.
He suddenly remembered what his uncle Bennett had said to him a few days ago.
"Maybe if you want a peaceful life, you can't keep doing things the old way. The mafia should transform."
But Kane didn't agree. He felt he had enough ability to protect his wife.
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
While sleeping, I felt like someone was watching me.
I instinctively opened my eyes and met Kane's deep gaze.
"Looks like I woke you up," Kane said.
I rubbed my eyes and shook my head gently.
"I wasn't sleeping well, probably because you weren't beside me."
Hearing this, Kane leaned closer, his eyes lighting up.
"Are you inviting me to sleep with you every night from now on?"
"Isn't that what you should do as my husband?"
I blinked and threw the question back at him.
Kane probably didn't expect me to answer like that. He laughed and lay back down on the bed, holding me.
I smelled a faint scent of cigars on him, even in his hair.
I gently touched his head and asked hesitantly, "Did you go deal with something difficult?"
Luca used to smoke cigarettes after cigarette when he lost money and was in a bad mood.
Kane usually never smelled of smoke, but today it was strong enough to be a bit choking.
"What makes you think that, my dear cupcake?" Kane kissed my forehead.
"Because you smell strongly of smoke, which you usually don't."
Kane paused for a moment, instinctively sniffing his own clothes, then showed a helpless smile.
"Your nose is as sensitive as a puppy's. How about I go change clothes and take a shower, then we have breakfast together?"
I nodded without hesitation and let go of my arms around Kane's strong waist.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom. I smiled and started playing with my phone when an unfamiliar message caught my eye—it was from Luca.
He didn't say anything else, just sent me a meaningful message.
"I thought you'd never have family again in this life. Guess what? Your father's sister found me."
My father's sister?
I froze.
I had no memories of my father, so realistically speaking, I had no feelings for his relatives either.
But my hands trembled inexplicably.
Luca's message meant one thing: in this world, I still had other family, or rather, blood relatives.
Tears couldn't help but flow down my face, so much so that I didn't even notice when Kane came back to my side.
Kane gently touched my cheek and tenderly wiped away my tears. "My cupcake, why are you crying?"
His eyes fell on my phone, and he frowned. "That damn Luca, is he bothering you again?"
I wiped away my tears and looked at Kane.
Kane had obviously finished reading the message on my phone. He frowned, seemingly not planning to be happy for me, and looked down at me, asking, "Do you want to go find those family members?"
I hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
Father was a distant figure to me. Although Luca was my stepfather, I had never called him father.
When my mother used to mention my father, there was always tenderness in her expression.
I thought maybe my father's family would be good people too.
Seeing me nod, Kane hesitantly handed the phone back to me. "But this news came from Luca, so I need to verify it. Until then, don't contact him or meet with him."
Kane's tone was rarely serious and stern.
I nodded obediently. I knew what kind of person Luca was and didn't want to cause trouble for Kane.
If he were trying to trick me into going out to do something bad, it would waste Kane's time having to rescue me.
Seeing me so obedient, Kane's mood brightened.
He picked me up in one swift motion and carried me into the bathroom.
He washed my face and even brushed my teeth for me.
I said a bit embarrassedly, "I'm not a child anymore. I can do these things myself."
But Kane insisted on holding the cup to my lips. Seeing me obediently cooperate with his actions, Kane's eyes suddenly filled with satisfaction.
I was beginning to suspect Kane had some kind of special preference.
As if my eyes revealed my inner thoughts, Kane said, "What are you thinking? Isn't making you more comfortable what I should do as your husband?"
"Actually, I think what you should do is sit there quietly watching me, then say to me like other bosses, 'Woman, come here, sit on my lap.'"
Hearing this, Kane couldn't help but laugh.
Then he became serious again, nodding at me with a straight face, playing along. "Alright, next time I'll do exactly that."
We walked out of the room laughing and joking.
Today was much earlier than usual, so breakfast wasn't ready yet, which startled the cooks. The sound of scrambling came from the kitchen.
I tugged on Kane's sleeve. "Let's go for a walk."
Kane had no objection to this. He nodded.
I had hardly ever visited the estate's garden before, though through the windows I could see how beautiful and exquisite it was.
This was my first time strolling leisurely through the garden.
The flowers here were blooming so beautifully, more brilliantly than any I'd seen anywhere else before.
Kane reached up and plucked a rose in full bloom from the side, tucking it behind my ear. He smiled and said, "Very beautiful."
I gently touched the soft, fragrant flower and said to Kane, "Such beautiful flowers should be left to keep growing."
But Kane shook his head. "Their purpose is to please us."
It seemed Kane and I had different views on these matters.
But this didn't affect our pleasant pre-breakfast time strolling through the garden.
When we returned to the estate, Nina was sitting at the dining table, yawning.
Seeing me and Kane come in together, she smiled. "Good morning, Sonya, Mr. Moretti."
Kane nodded slightly, which counted as his greeting.
Just as we sat down, Kane suddenly spoke up. "Do you like Bandel?"
Nina was startled by this question.
So was I.
We looked at each other, then turned to Kane in shock.
Nina stammered a bit. "Mr. Moretti, I just think Mr. Bandel has a very masculine charm."
Kane didn't say much more, just handed Nina a business card.
"This is Bandel's number. You can ask him to have lunch with you today."
