Chapter 122 Chapter 122
Logan
I didn’t like the feeling of defeat.
No one did.
My chest felt tight as I dragged my feet back to the pack house. Hours of scouring through the woods and still there had been no sign of Elias or Dorian. Maurie stepped out of the kitchen as I was heading upstairs.
“Should I set the table for you?” She asked softly. I shook my head no. Even if I was in the mood to have dinner, she looked like she’d aged an extra fifty years and it was taking her the last bit of strength to stand on her feet.
I continued my ascent. “Head home and have some rest, Maurie.” My words carried over my shoulder. Pausing outside my room door, I braced myself for the confrontation that was bound to happen.
Sienna’s green eyes snapped to me the second I walked in. She was half-sitting on the bed with her hands cuffed to the headboard. “Where’s Elias?” She spat. I signaled Mara to excuse us. I waited until she was gone before approaching the dressing table where the keys to the cuffs sat.
“Where’s my cub!” She yelled out.
I grounded my teeth together as I uncuffed her, knowing what was about to happen. The second the handcuffs fell away from her wrists, she lunged at me. I stood back and took it, shielding my eyes as she dragged her nails across every surface she could find.
“How dare you sedate me when my child is missing! How fucking dare you! You had no freaking right!” The hurt in her voice sliced deep into my chest and my throat felt tight. She took a step back, tears streaming down her cheeks. “You have no idea the things I went through to have him! You cannot begin to imagine–“
“He’s my cub too!” I bellowed.
She flinched at my tone. My hands fisted beside me as I struggled to reign in my temper. “I fucked up by sending you out of the pack and I’m so sorry! But acting like this isn’t hurting me too is so unfair!”
Her chest rose and fell as she took my words in. I was immediately at her side when her legs gave out beneath her. “He took our cub, Logan.” She sobbed. “Our baby is all by himself out there.” Pressing my lips together, I wiped the tears from her eyes.
“I’m going to bring your cub to you, I swear it.” I vowed.
Hours later, I stepped out of the bathroom, freshly showered. It had taken a lot, but finally I’d convinced Sienna to get some food inside her and try to fall asleep. Picking up a shirt from the closet, I prepared to head out again to the woods.
Dorian wasn’t going to harm Elias, at least not without making me watch. For that reason, I was certain Elias was fine. I just needed to find him before irreparable damage could be done. Word had already come back about Dorian’s mother.
An Omega named Estelle.
She’d died of natural causes a few weeks ago. Her death must have pushed Dorian into coming out of hiding.
The pack was settling in for an early night as I walked to the woods. Security had been tightened even more and everyone was trying to be extra cautious. After all, if the Lycan King’s own cub could be kidnapped then anything could happen to them.
And they wouldn’t be wrong for thinking so.
The hairs at the back of my neck stood when a familiar scent hit my nose. It was a scent I could recognize in my sleep. Elias’s. My heart rate picked up as I immediately shifted and made a mad dash deeper into the woods.
Dorian must have recently walked past this track with him. Where had they been headed? My paws hit the ground harder, my limbs barely resting before I picked them back up.
There was suddenly another scent in the air.
It was stronger than Elias’s but it didn’t belong to any Lycan. Scent maskers. We used them all the time during wars to cover up our trail. I skidded to a stop, spinning around in all directions. Only thick trees surrounded the area, and I realized I’d been purposely misled.
Retracing my steps, I tried to locate the exact location I’d last perceived Elias’s scent. His scent kept disappearing the more l tried to track it down, the scent maskers already taking effect. I circled the woods for hours until everywhere turned pitch black.
Sienna was up and waiting for me by the time I prodded back to the pack mansion.
Her shoulders deflated as she registered I was returning alone. Tying the laces of her robe tighter around her body, she hugged her arms to herself. Her eyes were swollen and red, and it hurt that I was helpless to take her pain away. “I couldn’t sleep for too long.” She said by way of explanation.
My response was a curt nod. Neither of us were looking forward to spending a night without Elias. “Let’s head up–“
“Logan!”
I spun on my heel at the sound of my name. Sienna stepped to the side, her eyes immediately wide with worry.
Slamming the door shut behind him, Kael rushed into the house. He bounced his gaze between Sienna and I before resting them on mine. “I was afraid you’d already be asleep. One of our warriors says he just received information from an unknown scout claiming to have seen someone who matched Elias’s description.”
Hope filtered into my chest. Sienna instinctively dug her fingers into my arms as her eyes watered. “Really?”
“Yes,” Kael rasped. “The scout rushed back to keep an eye on them. We have to head out now.”
I knew there was no use asking Sienna to wait in the house. We waited a few seconds for her to quickly throw on a jacket and then we were sprinting to join whoever it was the scout had spoken to. “Alpha,” he said, bowing his head in greeting.
I waved it off. “Lead the way. Which direction did they go?”
We followed a narrow trail as he led us in the direction the scout had taken. There were so many questions on my mind. Who was the scout? Why were they out in the woods at this time of the night and how had they gotten into the pack?
We came to a halt when he stopped. I dragged my gaze from Kael to him, drawing up closer with Sienna behind me. “What’s wrong?”
They couldn’t find the words to give me a reply, but they didn’t need to.
Lying face down on the ground was an unknown wolf…
And he had a stake piercing through his chest from behind.
