Chapter Eighty Nine - Cain
Chapter Eighty Nine - Cain
I blink, opening my eyes. Though I’ve technically been unconscious, I’ve felt every minute of this. Every moment of my pain as well as Rosalie’s. And I’ve relived every second of it too, like a flashback over and over. Of how they attacked me. Of how they stole her away.
I try to sit up and someone is there, helping me. I want it to be Rosalie but as my eyes focus, I can see it’s not. Her hair is too dark, her features are too much like mine, like Aeron’s.
“It’s okay.” Layla says.
I let out a low growl. No, it’s not. Nothing is okay. My mate is gone. Stolen. And I wasn’t able to help her. To defend her. What good am I if I can’t even do that?
“Cain?” Someone gasps from the doorway.
I look up, my heart freezing at the voice. I know that voice. It sings to my soul. It touches parts of me nothing else could.
“Rosalie?” I murmur, frowning.
She’s half crying, rushing across the room, throwing herself on me and I shut my eyes breathing in her scent. Only, she smells off. She smells… my Wolf growls as I recognise it. As I place what that means.
She looks up and I see that same old fear in her eyes. The one that haunted her every look when we first found her.
“She’s okay.” Aeron says.
“Is she?” I ask, my eyes on her not him.
“I’m more than that.” She says taking my hand and placing it on her belly. “I’m pregnant Cain.”
My eyes widen, I stare half in disbelief from her to my brother. But then my joy turns to ashes.
“Whose is it?” I don’t know why I ask. Why it even matters. She’s back. That should be all that counts.
She frowns as she registers the double meaning. That she thinks I fear it’s Knox’s.
“It’s ours.” Aeron says. He’s beside me now. The other side from Rosalie.
I lean back letting out a low breath. My mate is back. My mate is pregnant.
Layla has left us to it, no doubt she’s gone to look for Dylan and check he’s unharmed.
“I’m so happy you’re okay.” Rosalie whispers. She’s curled herself up beside me now. Her beautiful body melding with mine.
I cast my eyes over her and all I can see are the bruises, the dirt, the stains on her clothes too. God, what has she been through while I was lying here useless?
She shakes her head, taking my hand and squeezes it. “I’m okay.”
“What did he do?” I shouldn’t ask. I’ve no right to ask but something in me has to know.
She winces, glancing at Aeron then back at me. “He…” She trails off. “He didn’t know I was with pup at first. I made a deal when he found out. He wanted to kill them, he…” Her eyes widen suddenly, and we can both feel it her panic as it soars.
“What is it?” Aeron growls.
“I think he tried to poison me. I think he tried to make me miscarry.” She half whimpers.
Aeron is up on his feet, responding immediately. Yelling for Axel to get in here. Axel comes racing, his eyes fixed on me.
“Not him.” Aeron says. “Rosalie.”
“What’s wrong?” Axel asks, as she flushes with shame as if any of this is her fault.
“I think he tried to poison me. To poison our pups.” She whispers so quietly.
Axel starts questioning her, checking her, before disappearing and bringing in some massive piece of medical equipment.
“Lay back down.” He says as calmly as he can.
Rosalie lies beside me and I wrap my arm around her, comforting her, relishing the feel of my mate back where she belongs, despite the seriousness of this moment.
She pulls her top up and we see more bruises, more evidence of what that piece of shit Wolf did to our mate. Both Aeron and I let out a low possessive growl and Rosalie shuts her eyes, holding her breath, waiting for the news she fears.
Axel moves the scanner thing over her belly. She gasps from the feel of it, and we all stare at where he points.
“Is that..?” She whispers it.
“Our pups.” Aeron says taking her hand.
It’s there. Visible. Two of them. She’s not showing yet but inside our pups are already forming into something tangible.
“They look healthy to me.” Axel says. “It’s likely they gave you wolfsbane if you were sick, but these are Lycan pups. It’d take a lot more than that for you to miscarry.”
She nods, biting her lip. “Do you know what sex they are?”
Axel frowns, moving the scanner more. “It’s hard to say. Carli would be able to give a definitive answer but from what I can tell I’d say they are both boys.”
“Boys.” She whispers looking at me and Aeron. “We’re having boys.”
Something inside me swells at that. At the fact I’m going to be a father. At the fact that after all this fighting, Rosalie is clearly wanting this too. Aeron meets my gaze and though we don’t say it, I can see he’s feeling the same.
“You should get some rest. You’ve had a horrible ordeal, and you need to recover.” Axel says to her.
She glances at me, then at Aeron. “I need to shower.” She whispers so quietly.
“Do you want to be alone?” Aeron asks. We can both see it, the trauma, the way she’s folding in on herself now that her adrenaline is easing off and she’s realising it’s over.
“I just need to get clean.” She replies, avoiding both our gazes and quietly she slips from the room.
Axel looks between us. “I want to monitor her closely now that she’s with pup.”
Aeron grunts almost dismissively. “Fine. Do whatever you need to.” And thankfully Axel leaves it at that, rolling the scanner thing out as he goes.
“Where was she?” I ask as soon as the door shuts.
“I don’t know. Luna Marissa was helping her to escape.”
“Seriously?”
“From what I could tell. Knox caught them just as we arrived.”
“Has she said anything?”
“Nothing. But the vibes I’m getting…”
I nod. I’m getting them too. It feels like she’s shutting down. Like she’s somehow blaming herself for this. And worse, I think she thinks we might reject her.
“She shouldn’t be alone.” I state.
“No.” Aeron agrees and then I see it, the glint in his eye.
“What are you thinking?” I ask.
“That you need to rest and so does our mate.” He replies pulling the covers off, helping me to get up.
