Chapter 92 His Enemy's Daughter
ADRIANA
I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard from Yara.
Elijah was my mate. All this time, the man I’d been hoping to fall in love with was the man I’d actually fallen in love with.
What were the odds? I just stood there and stared at him with tears welling up in my eyes. From the way he looked at me, I was sure that he knew too.
I shifted back quickly and put on my second shirt that had been worn under the first one and ran to him without hesitation.
“Elijah, we’re mates.”
I was so happy so I pulled him in for a tight hug, thanking the goddess for not letting me meet some psycho who probably didn’t know how to treat women.
I’d met Elijah who had saved me from my father and who was the reason for my joy and happiness.
The man I’d been looking for all this time was right before me and I had no idea.
One of my main reservations about what Elijah and I had was that I wondered what would happen when he finally found his mate.
I’d wanted to speak to him about it at some point but he brushed it off, saying that it didn’t matter because nothing was going to happen.
I wanted to ask him if he meant that he was still going to keep seeing me even when he was married but I didn’t. I really didn’t want to know the answer to that question.
But now, I really didn’t have to bother because I was his mate.
“Elijah, did you hear what I said? I said we’re mates.”
He nodded slowly and gave me a small smile but it didn’t look natural. It looked like it physically hurt him to smile.
“Are you okay? You don’t look like you’re good. Or aren’t you happy that we finally found out?”
“That’s not it. Of course I’m happy. Why wouldn’t I be? It’s what we’ve always wanted.”
But he didn’t look happy at all.
“Elijah, are you okay?”
He sighed heavily and stepped back from me a bit.
“Addy, there’s something I need to tell you.”
I didn’t like his tone and it worried me. What was it? What did he want to tell me this time around?
“What is it? You’re scaring me.”
He was looking worried and I didn’t know what he was going to say. I didn’t know what to expect from him.
“Addy, I—”
“Adriana? What on earth are you doing here by this time? Come inside, you’re freezing!”
As Hazel pulled me into the house, I tried to remove my hand from her grip.
“Wait, I want to speak to Elijah.”
But her grip was too tight.
“You’ll speak to him later. He’s not running away.”
But he was. What if what he wanted to tell me was something very important that he won’t be able to tell me again?
“Hazel, wait—”
“Oh just relax. You’re freezing. Look at what you’re wearing by this time. Come inside so you’ll get warm.”
I turned around and saw Elijah standing by the door and looking at me with an expression I couldn’t read. What was it he wanted to tell me at this point that made him so sad?
Hazel pulled me inside my room and helped me put on better clothes, then she went into the bathroom and helped me run a warm bath that she made me soak in for at least almost an hour.
All the while, I just sat there and let her do her thing while my mind wandered around, thinking about what exactly Elijah wanted to say.
Or maybe he wanted to reject me.
Was that it?
That was the only thing that I could think of because why else would he look like that after being told that we were mates?
Maybe he didn’t see me as wife material anymore. Maybe he didn’t think I was fit enough to be his Luna.
Was it because of what happened with Leo?
But that was so long ago, I didn’t think he would still be thinking about it.
“What were you doing out in the cold in the first place? It’s two am!”
As I sat in front of the fire that she had somehow prepared, I let out a heavy sigh.
“I went to shift.”
“What did you say?”
“I went to shift!” I repeated louder.
She stopped stoking up the fire.
“You went to shift? Since when did you have a wolf?”
I’d forgotten that she didn’t know about the first time I’d shifted.
“A while ago.”
She didn’t say anything but I saw her nod slowly.
“Elijah is my mate.” I decided to add. It’s not like she wasn’t going to find out eventually so I might as well tell her now.
“Oh, you know.” It was a mumble but I heard it clearly.
I stayed in front of the fire, just staring into it and hoping that it would reach out and burn me to wake me up from my daydream.
The day that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life was quickly turning out to be the saddest and the most awkward.
By the time I went back to my room, the sun had risen and I was relieved that Leo hadn’t come to my room yet to look for me.
Not that I didn’t want to see him but right now, I wanted to be alone. I just needed to think and worry about what Elijah wanted to say.
If he rejected me, I would become nothing and Hannah would win. But why would he reject me?
He had no reason to.
Or did he?
I mean, my father is the reason his pack was facing this current threat. My father was the reason he couldn’t sleep at night.
Two if not three of his other packs had been attacked and almost wiped out and now, the most grand attack of all was looming on the horizon.
Why would he want to marry the daughter of his enemy?
But I didn’t like that title. I wasn’t his daughter anymore.
