Chapter 72 Devil's Incarnate
ADRIANA
I watched Hannah walk away, not knowing exactly what to say.
My head cleared and I just stood there, replaying her words in my head. Had I heard right?
She was behind the attack. Tears gathered in my eyes and I wondered if I should go after her and demand she explain herself.
Why did she have to go that far just to get back at me? Why did she have to do that?
If she wanted to kill me, she could have just come up to me and done it without having to put Leo’s life at risk. What if something had happened to him?
What if Elijah hadn’t arrived there in time and I had nowhere to go?
Tears fell from my eyes and I slowly made my way upstairs to my room. I wanted to be alone for now. Training would have to wait.
If anyone asked me why I was crying, I wouldn’t know what to tell them, so it was best that I just went to my room.
As I climbed the stairs, I bumped into someone again. What the hell was with me and bumping into people today?
Since my head was bent down as I didn’t want them to see that I was crying, I just hastily apologized.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I didn’t see where I was going.”
Thankfully, my hair was covering my face and they wouldn’t have been able to see it clearly.
I barged into the room and tried to close the door but it just wouldn’t budge.
“What the hell?” I turned around to look at what was stopping it from closing and it was a foot.
Elijah’s foot.
He pushed the door back and entered, his eyes still on me as he closed it behind him.
There was no use closing the door now, he had already seen my face and he was the one person I didn’t want to see me like this.
I didn’t want him to tell me that I deserved it.
He stared at me like that for a couple of moments, looking deep into my eyes. I thought he was going to say something harsh.
Even worse, I thought Hannah had lied to him about our conversation and I had already begun to wonder what I was going to say to him when he brought it up.
Right now, he didn’t want to hear anything from me, so I had to wait until he spoke first.
Only, he didn’t say anything. He just pulled me in for a hug and pressed me against his chest firmly.
For the first few minutes, I tried to make sense of what was happening but I was still in complete shock.
We didn’t move or talk and at one point, I had to check if I was still breathing.
Okay, I was, but what was going on? I thought he hated me, so why would he hug me?
He finally pulled away and looked me in the eye, gently cleaning the tears from my face with his thumbs.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” he whispered in my ear.
Or maybe he heard the conversation and that’s why he’s apologizing now.
But still, I had to ask what was wrong? This was the same man who had told me to stay away from his son.
I wanted to ask him what was wrong and why he suddenly had a change of mind, but as soon as I opened my mouth, tears came rushing out of me uncontrollably.
Elijah pulled me back toward his chest and patted my back as I cried. I thought he hated me. I felt so lonely and alone.
“It’s okay. I’m here now, baby. Nothing will happen to you.”
I nodded and forced a smile as he cleaned my face again carefully. He led me to the bed and we sat down, facing each other.
“Why are you crying? What happened to you? Did anyone say anything to you?”
Should I tell him? I would like the pleasure of dealing with Hannah myself.
Also, she could always deny it in a heartbeat. I would be left with nothing but a reputation as a liar. I needed proof that she had been behind the attack.
Even though she had confessed to me herself, it wasn’t enough evidence. It was easily dismissible.
“Nothing, I just felt bad about everything.”
“I’m so sorry for everything I put you through. I didn’t mean to—I just needed some time to think things through. I don’t hate you, Adriana. I never will. I couldn’t.”
That was hard to believe with the way he looked at me and spoke to me before. I should even be lucky that he came to see me today.
I couldn’t even be happy because I thought about what would happen if he woke up the next day and decided he didn’t want to speak to me anymore?
“It’s okay. It’s fine, really. I should be the one apologizing.”
He shook his head firmly.
“Why should you? You’re not the one who attacked Leo. Don’t worry, the people responsible are paying for what they did.”
It took a minute before I caught on to what he was saying.
“Wait, you caught the people responsible?”
I didn’t want to call Lisa’s name in case he had found the wrong person. I wanted to have the privilege of making her pay for all she had done.
“Yes, I went to your pack and arrested Lisa and the people involved in the attack.”
Had he really done that? I would have loved to see the look on my father’s face at that moment.
It must have been satisfying.
I wanted to tell him that it wasn’t enough because she wasn’t the real perpetrator of this crime. She was just a puppet in the hands of the real mastermind.
It didn’t matter if he arrested her. Hannah would just look for someone new to convince that I was the devil incarnate.
Maybe she would skip straight to my father. I mean, he truly hates me and that would work out perfectly for both of them.
