Chapter 64 Released
ADRIANA
Hazel sat across from me, her eyes filled with worry.
“Hazel, please let me go. I should be the one apologizing and not the other way around. Elijah entrusted him in my care and I got him injured so I should be the one begging for forgiveness. Not you, not him.”
It had been a week since they’d kept me in this hospital. My hand had healed since the day after I broke it but I didn’t want to tell anyone or take off the cast because I knew that would raise too many suspicions.
The only person who knew about me and my secret was mad at me so basically, I was stuck wearing a cast I didn’t need anymore.
“Has he woken up? Is he okay?”
She nodded and placed her hand on mine gently.
“He’s fine, Adriana. He’s responding to treatment and he’s going to be okay. It’s you I’m worried about. It’s you I’m scared for.”
I laughed lightly to put her off her worries.
“I’m fine, Hazel. Really, I’m okay. Do I look like I’m sick?”
She opened her mouth but didn’t say anything at first, just studied my face carefully.
“What happened that day?”
I should have known this question would eventually come up.
“I don’t know. After you left, it was just me and the kids. Then I started seeing shadows. At first I thought it was you guys coming back but then I got this feeling that something was wrong. Since I couldn’t shake it off, I told the kids to get in the house but Leo came back out and he got caught in the crossfire. I didn’t plan for him to. I thought he’d listen and stay with the other kids. There was no way to call for help because I didn’t want to leave Lisa and the other wolves alone with the kids.”
No matter how much I think about it, it’s still my fault. I feel like I could have done something more than what I’d done. I was just glad that more kids didn’t get hurt.
“That’s not what I was asking about. The other day before you passed out, you were begging Elijah not to hit you. Who hit you, Adriana?”
Shit.
“Was he there when I said that?” She nodded. “Oh God.”
“Who hit you, Adriana?”
“I really don’t want to talk about it, let’s just forget it ever happened.”
I didn’t want to talk about it either. It was too painful.
“Adriana—” The door opened, silencing her and I was so relieved.
“Beta, the Alpha says I should inform you that it’s time to leave.”
I was confused.
“Leave? Has Leo been discharged already?”
She turned back to me and nodded.
“Yes, the doctor said he was free to go home.” She turned back to the guard. “Tell the Alpha I’ll meet him at home.”
I waited for the guard to leave before I said anything.
“You didn’t tell me he had been released. What about me? When will I be released?”
She sat back down in her former position.
“I spoke to the doctor before I came in here and he said he wants to watch you for a couple more days before he lets you go.”
“What? But that’s not fair. I want to go home with Leo.”
I felt like I owed him an apology for not protecting him properly. At least, his father certainly thought so.
“I know you want to make up for what happened but Adriana, your health comes first. Stay here and get treated and when you feel better and the doctor lets you go, I promise I’ll be here to pick you up. Please, just stay here for now.”
She looked really worried so I decided not to fight with her and just agree.
“Okay, I’ll stay but please let me know if he’s okay. Please keep me updated.”
She nodded and the nurse came in to give me an injection and that made me sleep within minutes.
I woke up later that night and Hazel wasn’t there anymore. Elijah still hasn’t come to see me. What was I expecting though? That he’d stop being angry all of a sudden and kiss me? I felt so bad for everything that happened and I understand that he didn’t want to speak to me or see me.
But I wish he would. I began reading the books Hazel had brought for me to keep me company.
She’d said they didn’t catch any of the wolves but since they knew who it was, it was only a matter of time before they did.
What exactly did Lisa want from me and what did she mean by Landon still loves me?
I’d given her what she wanted and she tracked me down here to cause trouble because of what exactly?
Why had she sworn to make my life miserable?
Couldn’t she just enjoy the life she had always wanted?
A life without me and all the attention on her?
Thinking about it brought tears to my eyes and I couldn’t hold them back anymore. Why couldn’t she just leave me alone? First it was my father coming after me and now her.
“I hate you, Lisa! I hate you!”
Hot tears poured from my eyes uncontrollably and eventually, I could feel a headache coming and I had to stop crying.
I took a walk to clear my head. Thinking about all that was not very good for me or my recovery.
As I approached the door, I noticed a shadow move outside my room but once I opened the door, there was no one in the corridor.
Maybe it was just a nurse making rounds.
I took the elevator to the roof. The air was stronger there and I felt less suffocated up there, away from everything.
I stared down at the people coming in and out of the hospital. I saw him marching quickly out of the hospital toward his car.
Elijah… Why was he here?
I’m sorry, I said in my mind, wishing he could hear me.
He looked up immediately as if he had heard me but just like that, he looked away and drove off into the night.
