Chapter 31 Don't You Have Work To Do
ADRIANA
Elijah must have felt embarrassed because he sat up beside me.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to take things too far—”
“No, it’s not you. It’s me. I haven’t done this before and I don’t want to embarrass myself.”
I could see him relax after hearing that and he gave me a small smile.
“That’s okay.”
I nodded and that awkward silence I hated settled between us. The ceiling suddenly became interesting to me as I lay there, wondering what he was thinking about.
“Um,” he cleared his throat and got up with one move. “I have a meeting to attend and I’ll be busy for the rest of the day. But if you need anything, just call for me.”
I doubted I would be within three feet of him today because of what had just happened but I nodded and gave him a smile as he left.
My mind was revolving around everything that happened and I had flashbacks of his touch for the entire day.
After he left and I was able to finally move my limbs, I got up and went to get the tray of food that had been neglected for several hours while we slept.
It was already cold so I took it downstairs.
As soon as I opened the door, I came face to face with Hazel.
“Hey. I was just looking for you. Are you just waking up?”
I paused a bit before answering.
“Yes, I am. Why are you asking?”
“Hmm, I was wondering why the King of Lycans would disappear for almost an entire day and suddenly appear, fresh out of bed.”
My mouth opened but I had no way of defending myself because I had a feeling she had only asked that question to tease me and not to confirm if her suspicions were true.
“Anyway, I was coming to ask you if you wanted to join me for training today.”
My mood lifted.
“Yes, I’d love to. But I have to eat first. I’m running really low on fuel.”
“Come on, I was going to stop by the kitchen too.”
We went down to the kitchen and luckily, lunch was ready. I would probably have died of hunger if it wasn’t.
As we were eating, I felt someone’s gaze on me.
And I was right. Elijah was there. Aiden was speaking to him but he wasn’t listening to a thing he was being told because his eyes were on me.
I suddenly forgot how to use the spoon and I just twirled it in my hand, unable to break away from his gaze.
Hazel scoffed and shook her head, muttering something about wasting time. I didn’t exactly pay attention to her because I caught another pair of eyes.
Will I ever catch a break?
Hannah stood at the top of the stairs, staring daggers at me. It was obvious that she could see Elijah’s eyes were on me and as usual, she wasn’t happy about that.
“Training starts soon.” Hazel stood up with her plate and I realized I had only taken a spoon or two.
She didn’t wait for me and as soon as she walked past, Aiden left Elijah and went after her, leaving Elijah to come to me.
“Hey.” As soon as I heard his voice, I almost dropped to the floor.
Didn’t he have work to catch up with?
Hannah was still at the stairs, watching everything.
“Hey. How’s it going?”
“Are you going for practice?”
I just nodded with my eyes still on my plate. I couldn’t even wolf down my food as I had planned because I didn’t want to embarrass myself more than I already had this morning.
“I could show you around. Do you know where the main training ground is?”
I don’t know what pushed me to say what I did next. Maybe it was the fact that I was still very touchy from this morning and I still hadn’t wrapped my head around the fact that we had gone that far, or the fact that I didn’t want to be seen close to him right now.
It wasn’t because of Hannah, obviously. I wasn’t scared of her. But with the way Hazel had been behaving, it was only a matter of time before other people picked up on the fact that we spent a lot of time together and then, not only would that bring more attention that I didn’t want, but it would also probably bring me more hate than I could handle.
I was sure Hannah wasn’t the only one in this pack who had a crush on him and I knew they would probably be in competition with each other so hearing or knowing that he was spending nights in my room in very compromising positions would not do well for the low profile I was trying to keep.
“Don’t you have work to do?”
He took a step back like the question had punched him and I felt bad but there was no way to take it back.
“No, I mean—”
He hummed, something passing through his eyes.
“No, it’s fine. You’re right. I’m just being a pest. I’ll see you later.”
He walked away without giving me a chance to say anything and Hannah took the chance to run up to him for her daily display of desperation.
As she placed her hand on his shoulder, she looked at me like it was an accomplishment.
Ignoring her, I made my way to the training ground and even though it was better than when I’d gone to the female ground, I knew I was going to have to train more if I wanted to be good enough here.
