Chapter 148 Our Future
ELIJAH
I sat beside Adriana and watched her as she slept peacefully. She looked like she had been through a lot in those woods.
The men had found her at the border, on the verge of losing her consciousness. She looked like she had been through hell and I felt so sad when I saw her in that condition. I had to call the doctor immediately even before they brought her here to the house.
I held her hand gently and looked at her, hoping that she would wake up soon and she would be the same person I fell in love with.
The doctor told me that she was pregnant and I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it because it sounded like a coincidence. How could she be pregnant at this time of all times?
I just hoped she and the baby were okay and nothing bad had happened to them.
Hazel entered the room quietly.
“Hey, nothing yet?”
I shook my head.
“Not even an eye movement. Do you think she’ll wake up?” I sounded desperate.
I needed someone to tell me something. Reassure me. Even lie to me.
“Don’t say things like that. Of course she will. She’s just been through so much and her body needs to rest. Come on, you’re going to put a hole in her if you keep staring at her like that. Let’s go outside for a walk.”
I was going to say no, but on second thought, I really needed to clear my head of some thoughts for now. The pack was silent since there were no pack members and most of the men had been sent back to my pack. The others were just here because I was here.
“Do you think everything is finally over?” Hazel asked as we stared into the sunset together.
I didn’t have an answer to that yet.
“I hope it is but truthfully, it sounds like a fairytale. I’ve been fighting this war for so long that now that it seems like there’s peace, I can’t seem to believe it. I don’t know, Hazel.”
For Adriana to be back, doesn’t it mean that the cult is dead? And why else would she have been that dirty when they found her?
“I hope it is. You deserve all the happiness the world can give, Elijah. You’re both my best friends and I love you so much and I really hope that you and Adriana can work things out.”
She knew about the whole proposal thing because she was the one who helped me set it up.
“It’s fine. You don’t have to worry about any of that. I’ll take action on it. For now, let’s just hope she wakes up. This woman means the world to me, Hazel and I’m not going to give up on her.”
She pulled me in for a hug and rested her head on my shoulder. I had been friends with Hazel from the beginning and she had always had my back and I was grateful for that.
She had never given me any reason to regret making her my Beta and she had proved her usefulness time and time again.
As she let go of me, she returned inside to continue packing things. I decided to go back home to my pack and let her wake up there. Since we didn’t exactly have anything to do here, I would like us to go back home.
As I walked back into my room, I heard my name being called and I thought it was Hazel but it wasn’t.
“How on earth did you guys get in here?” I pointed my finger at the sisters as they stood in the room.
“You forget that we’re not human.”
I sighed and sat down.
“That’s creepy. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Adriana came back home, she’s a little rough around the edges.” I cleared my throat. My voice sounded a little choked, when it was clearer I continued. “I wanted to say thank you for keeping your promise and keeping her safe. I couldn’t have done it without you guys.”
“We are glad we could help. The cult has been taken care of. You can live the rest of your days forgetting they ever existed which we would like you to. Adriana fought a brave fight, she fought monsters she didn’t make and she did a good job. One last thing, Elijah. Your son’s aunt, Hannah, she’s dead.”
I didn’t even know how to respond to that. She had been after Adriana’s life for so long. Why would she change now?
“What happened? Did Luke turn around and screw them up?”
That was what could happen to her.
“No, she died trying to save Adriana from Luke. Lisa was killed by them a long time ago.”
Why would Hannah want to save Adriana from Luke?
“And Luke? What happened to him?”
“We took care of him, you don’t have to worry.”
That was all I needed to hear. I didn’t need any more than that. We could go back home and have the family we’ve always dreamed of.
Finally, there was now peace for Adriana and I.
I stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the peaceful landscape. It was hard to believe that just days ago, we were fighting for our lives against the cult. Now everything was quiet.
There was a part of me that was waiting for something else to go wrong, for another threat to emerge. But maybe this was it. We could finally have the life we deserved.
I thought about Adriana lying in that bed, pregnant with our child. A child I didn’t plan for but couldn’t be more grateful for. I wondered if she knew before she went to face the cult.
Did she know she was carrying our baby when she made that sacrifice? The thought made my chest tighten. She could have lost everything. We could have lost everything. But we didn’t. We survived. And now we had a chance at a real future together.
I just needed her to wake up so I could tell her how much I loved her and how sorry I am for everything.
