Part 44

Part 44
Her spell had been effective, she had experienced the power of it for herself. She had planned on entertaining Kiran for the next three or four weeks until she could do a pregnancy test, not that she minded a repeat of the previous night.

When she saw that it was 8 p.m., she sat down on the floor and drew a circle in the air around her. She took the crystal from the windowsill and clenched it tightly in her hand as she murmured to herself.

“I call on you Urdr, to show me what once was. I call on you Verdandi, to show me what will be. I call on you Skuld, to show what shall be. I call on the Norns, to show me the past, the present, and future

Dezrael’s eyes flew open,  with a shocked gasp coming from her throat. Her spell on Kiran had been broken, and she was blindsided to see how, or why, it had happened. Kiran Sinclair would not be coming back to her cabin.

She closed her eyes again and said a desperate prayer to Freya, calling on the magic of the elves in Alfheim; she needed the fertility of their universe. She’d need a lot more magic to enchant Kiran.

She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to enchant him; there was a strong force that surrounded him and she was sure that Karani had somehow preserved a circle of protection around him, to ward off enchantments. It was the only thing that made sense to her, she wasn’t without power herself.

Four weeks later, Dezrael took a pregnancy test and cried when it showed ‘not pregnant’. She screamed in frustration. Her screams led to tears as her heart cracked a little bit and she wondered if she could get Kiran to notice her the old fashioned way.

She started following him, eating lunch in the hotel every day, in hopes of catching a glimpse of him. She would walk past him in the aisle at the grocery store and he would look past her. She would spend time at a coffee shop she had noticed that he favored, but not once did he so much as glance at her.

She was shocked the first time she followed him to a daycare center, dismayed that he already had a first-born child. None of her spells had shown her a child had been born, and she started to question her own magic.

Kiran was so entranced with the little boy and he had a special smile every time the little boy was in his presence. Relief had briefly settled on her heart when she realized she wouldn’t have to kill the child. Kiran was only fostering him; she didn’t mind killing, but for some reason, she didn’t want to see Kiran hurt.

Her magic was stagnant, neither dwindling, nor growing stronger. She didn’t completely understand why. As the days passed, she hoped  Kiran would visit Addie and Brent again, but when she delved into their memories she saw she had missed him twice.

She dialed Sean’s number from memory, never before having felt so alone as she did in Seward. She listened to the ringing and closed her eyes when she heard his voice.

“Dezi? Do you know what time it is here?”

“I’m so sorry, I just needed to talk.” Dezrael felt the first tears as they spilled onto her cheeks.

“You’re not pregnant, are you?” Sean stated it, rather than asking her.

“No, I’m not, and it wasn’t easy to get him here, that spell took me a whole damn week to do and somewhere during the course of the next day it had somehow been broken.” Irritation had settled into her voice and she let out a breath.

Sean didn’t want to encourage her and the thought of her having sex with another man cut deep into his heart. “Restore yourself and do it again.” He heard her sigh and closed his eyes as his breath caught in his throat. He didn’t want to support her, but he had taken a vow and he wasn’t one to give up.

“I love you, Sean. Go back to sleep.” Dezrael ended the call and climbed back into the bed.

When she woke from her magic induced sleep spell two days later, she felt stronger, and more confident. She did a quick locator spell and saw Kiran at the hotel. It was time to get back to work.

Dezrael struggled with the enchantment spell and three weeks later having done it five times, she gave up, she needed something stronger. She would have to go back to Sweden for that. She needed to find a dead witch and burn her, preferably an ancestor.

She made her arrangements and two days later she was back in Sweden. She had gone through the Grimoire, and eventually found the spell she was looking for. It was a difficult one, especially since she had to do it alone.

She cried the entire time  she dug up her mother’s body, only to have to watch it burn, too. She carefully gathered the ashes,  then did a purification spell.

She spent time with Sean, and didn’t want to leave him again, and he convinced her to stay  home for a few months. He told her she could go back to Seward in the new year, after all their coven festivities were done.

“What difference will a few months make?” The way Sean  looked at her,  made her feel guilty again. Why was she so keen on seeing Kiran again? She knew the answer to that question but she’d never admit that her feelings for him had changed.

“It will give the ashes time to rest as well, the longer they’re charged in the sun and moon, the better the spell will work.” Dezrael agreed with him, and Sean’s smile, when she said she’d stay, took the guilt away.

Dezrael spent time with her husband and her coven. She led them into the new year at the helm, as their Coven Mistress, and she felt stronger than ever. She was convinced now that Karani was acting from beyond the grave, and enchanting Kiran would just make her magic dwindle again.

Four months later, Dezrael flew to Anchorage; this time, with a different plan in mind. She paid Lynne a visit and found that Kiran had gotten married in the time that she was gone. No wonder none of her love spells had worked that first week she’d been in Seward.

True love had blocked her spell, as it always did. There was no stronger bond than that of true love. She watched them together, their little life seemingly perfect. Any kind of feelings she had for Kiran disappeared as she watched them.

Dezrael smiled. ‘Not for long,’ she thought to herself, and decided that the timing was perfect. She couldn’t get caught doing this and she wouldn’t. She’d watched him long enough to know his routine was religiously followed.

Dezrael cleansed herself and began the painstaking ritual of the transformation spell.
