Chapter 11 Chapter 11
Chapter 11 Chapter 11
Today is the day I become engaged to Kael DeLuca.
Even if it is written in ink and sealed by contracts, even if the vow is born from fear of loss rather than pure fate, I refuse to let it be empty. In our world, rituals matter. Symbols matter. The Moon sees all things, even the promises we make when our hearts are conflicted.
The garden glows beneath the silver wash of moonlight, lanterns hanging from ancient trees, their flames flickering softly in the night breeze. The Alpha packs are gathered, their presence heavy and commanding. I feel them before I see them, the hum of power, the sharp awareness of wolves watching wolves. Every gaze is assessing, measuring, judging my worth as the future Luna beside Kael DeLuca.
My wolf stirs, alert but steady. Tonight, she is calm. Tonight, she understands the importance of this moment.
I step forward onto the stone path, my lilac dress flowing around my legs like spilled moonlight. The fabric is soft, delicate, almost deceptive against the strength coiled beneath my skin. The color was chosen deliberately. Not white. Not surrender. Lilac, for balance, for transition, for a promise not yet fully written.
I lift my chin as I walk, spine straight, shoulders back. I am not a pawn. I am not a prize. I am Lyra Vale.
And Kael is waiting for me.
He stands beneath the largest oak in the garden, dressed in black from throat to boots. His presence is commanding without effort. Alpha power rolls off him in slow, controlled waves. When his blue eyes find me, the world narrows to that gaze alone. Sharp. Intense. Possessive. Protective.
His wolf hums low inside my chest, answering mine.
I stop in front of him, heart pounding, breath steady. The pack elders step forward, murmuring the old words, calling the Moon as witness. I barely hear them. My focus is on Kael, on the way his eyes soften just slightly when he looks at me, as if this moment matters more to him than he lets anyone see.
He reaches for my hand, warm and solid, grounding. The garden falls silent.
“This bond,” one of the elders says, voice carrying through the night, “is witnessed by pack and Moon. Chosen by will. Protected by law. Honored by blood.”
Kael turns to me then, fully, his attention absolute. He produces the ring slowly, deliberately. The stone catches the moonlight, a deep blue that mirrors his eyes so perfectly it steals my breath.
“You wear my colors now,” he murmurs quietly, meant only for me. “My protection. My name.”
Emotion swells in my chest, unexpected and sharp. I nod, unable to speak as he slides the ring onto my finger. The metal is cool, the weight of it grounding, real. The moment it settles, something inside me clicks into place.
I smile.
Then I lean forward and kiss him.
The pack exhales as one. Approval ripples through the garden, a low murmur of acceptance. Kael’s hand comes to my waist, firm and possessive, returning the kiss with controlled intensity. Not a claim. Not yet. Just a promise.
And then I smell it.
My body stiffens instantly.
Pine. Smoke. Cold iron.
Riven.
My amber eyes burn as instinct flares hot and sharp. My wolf lifts her head, snarling low, recognition immediate and visceral. I break the kiss, breath hitching as I scan the garden.
I find him leaning against a tree at the edge of the lantern light, half-shadowed, dressed in black like a ghost carved from night. His silver eyes are fixed on me, unwavering, predatory, burning with something dark and intimate.
My stomach twists.
“Did you invite Riven Blackmoor?” I whisper to Kael, keeping my expression composed even as my pulse races.
He does not look away from me. “I did.”
My fingers tighten slightly in his. “Why?”
“So he knows,” Kael says calmly, voice low, deliberate, “who owns you.”
The words send a strange ripple through me. Part of me bristles. Another part settles. My wolf does not fight it. She presses closer to Kael’s presence, warm and steady.
Music begins, slow and rhythmic. Kael guides me onto the dance floor, his hand firm at my back, his body close. We move together seamlessly, practiced, controlled. The pack watches, reassured by the display of unity.
But Riven does not stop watching.
I feel him like a ghost against my spine. His attention coils around me, heavy and intimate, slipping beneath my skin. My wolf stirs uneasily, heat pooling low in my stomach, breath coming just a little faster.
It feels wrong.
It feels dangerous.
For a moment, the sensation intensifies, sharp and consuming, as if my body wants to crawl into his, to close the distance and surrender to something feral and unfinished.
I grip Kael tighter.
Then suddenly, just as abruptly as it began, the pull withdraws.
The pressure vanishes.
The noise quiets.
And all that remains is Kael.
His presence floods my senses, solid and unwavering. His wolf wraps around mine, grounding and sure. The craving fades, replaced by warmth, by certainty, by the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my palm.
Relief crashes through me so powerfully my knees almost buckle.
The dance ends. Applause rises. The ceremony concludes without incident. The Moon remains full and silent, watching but not intervening.
One by one, the guests depart, the garden emptying until only lantern light and quiet remain.
Kael leads me deeper into the garden, away from the eyes of the pack, beneath the trees where shadows soften and the night feels more intimate. He cups my face, his touch gentle despite the power beneath it.
“You did well,” he murmurs. “You chose well.”
I smile, genuine and warm, and kiss him again, slower this time. Deeper. My wolf purrs low, content, pressing closer to his.
The air shifts.
I feel it before it happens. Heat ripples through my veins. Bones hum. Muscles tighten. My breath catches as instinct rises, no longer restrained.
“I think,” I whisper, voice shaking with awe, “I’m shifting.”
Kael’s eyes darken, pupils dilating. His own breath deepens. “So am I.”
The garden seems to hold its breath as our wolves stir together, answering the Moon, answering each other. This is not chaos. This is alignment.
My mate.
My soulmate.
Kael.
And as my wolf rises beneath my skin, strong and unafraid, I know with quiet certainty that tonight, under this Moon, I am exactly where I am meant to be.
