Chapter 10 Chapter 10
Chapter 10 Chapter 10
The sunlight creeps through the hotel curtains, soft and golden, but it cannot soften the warmth that lingers in the sheets or the memory of the night before. I lie in Kael’s arms, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath my ear. The world outside might be dangerous, violent, and unpredictable, but here, in this moment, the city fades away.
Kael shifts slightly, wrapping an arm tighter around me, drawing me closer. “Sleep a little longer,” he murmurs, voice low and rough, a mixture of possessiveness and tenderness. “I like having you like this, calm, quiet… mine.”
I press my cheek to his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, grounding me. My wolf hums low, content but alert beneath my skin, aware of Kael’s presence, of the claim he’s made both formally and instinctively. I close my eyes, savoring the warmth, the intimacy, the rare sense of safety.
After a long moment, I sit up slowly, hair falling around my shoulders. Kael stirs, eyes lifting to meet mine, silver flaring faintly in the sunlight, still sharp, still aware, still Alpha. “Where are you going?” His voice carries a subtle edge of warning.
“I have… errands,” I reply, voice steady, trying to hide the mischievous spark in my chest. “Some things to handle before we leave.”
Kael sits up fully, eyes narrowing, gaze intense. “Do not get reckless,” he warns. “This city… there are people who will not hesitate. And you… you are mine. You must be careful.”
I bite my lip, suppressing a grin. “I will be careful,” I promise, though my wolf hums impatiently beneath my skin, eager for activity, for the rush of instinct.
Hours later, I find myself at the nightclub Kael has cautioned me about. Neon lights pulse against the walls, the bass reverberates through the floor, and the scent of alcohol and sweat hangs thick in the air. I move through the crowd, careful but observant, wolf alert, senses heightened. Every shadow, every movement, every flicker of intent is registered, catalogued, analyzed.
It is not long before trouble finds me. A man approaches, confidence bordering on aggression, his hands brushing mine in a way that is far too familiar, far too intrusive. I freeze for a heartbeat, wolf growling low beneath my skin, instincts flaring.
“I think you’re looking for trouble,” I say, voice low, controlled but hard, a warning I hope he understands.
He smirks, leaning closer. “Relax. I just want to talk. Maybe have a little fun.”
My wolf snarls, teeth clenching, claws pressing beneath my skin. This man is too close, too familiar, too threatening, and instinct screams at me to act. “I said back off,” I growl, stepping forward, the words sharp and final.
Before he can react, my teeth flash, catching his arm with a swift, furious motion. Pain explodes across my nerves, blood welling as he cries out. My wolf howls in triumph and frustration, adrenaline pumping through my veins, senses alive in a way that is intoxicating and terrifying.
The crowd freezes for a moment, then chaos erupts. I step back, chest heaving, eyes wild, wolf surging beneath my skin, and I realize the extent of my reaction. The man stumbles, clutching his arm, shock and fear written across his face.
Then I feel it, a presence, familiar and grounding, cutting through the chaos like steel. Kael.
He steps forward, hand reaching for my arm, grounding me instantly, calming the storm of wolf energy that threatens to consume me. “Lyra,” he murmurs, voice low, dangerous, possessive. “It’s okay. I’ve got you. Breathe.”
I inhale shakily, exhaling, feeling the tension release in waves as his hand rests on my lower back, firm and protective. My wolf snarls softly, coiled still, but settling under his touch.
“Do you understand why I warned you?” Kael says, eyes locking on mine, silver flaring faintly. “You cannot let your instincts take over in public. In the city. In situations where humans, any humans can be in danger.”
“I...I didn’t mean,” I start, voice trembling, the mixture of adrenaline and embarrassment still coursing through me.
He steps closer, eyes sharp, unyielding. “You must learn control, Lyra. Your wolf, your shapeshifting, your strength, they are incredible. But uncontrolled, they are dangerous. To you. To others. To the DeLuca family. To me.”
I bite my lip, gaze dropping to the floor, ashamed and frustrated. “I… I know. I just… I couldn’t stop it. He—he tried to...”
“Aggress you,” Kael finishes for me, voice softening slightly, though the edge of command remains. “And yes, you defended yourself. But your reaction… it could have cost someone more than just him. You have to master your wolf, your anger, your instincts. Always.”
I nod, chest heaving, wolf still restless but listening, obedient to the grounding presence of Kael beside me. “I will,” I whisper, almost pleading, voice low. “I’ll try. I promise.”
Kael’s hand brushes my cheek gently, thumb tracing the line of my jaw. “You’re already strong,” he says softly, voice rough with possessiveness. “But strength without control can be dangerous. Remember that. Always.”
I glance up at him, heart hammering, wolf coiled and alert, body still trembling from the surge of instinct and adrenaline. “I… I understand,” I murmur.
He pulls me close, resting his forehead against mine, grounding me, claiming me without words. “Good,” he says softly. “I will always protect you. Always. But you have to respect yourself, your power, and your wolf. Control it, Lyra. Not for me. For you. For everyone who could be affected by what you are.”
The club continues around us, music thumping, lights flashing, but in this moment, we are alone. Wolf and Alpha, mate and protector, tethered by bond, contract, and instinct. My chest heaves, heart pounding, wolf coiled beneath my skin, and yet a sense of calm settles slowly, a grounding in the safety of Kael’s arms.
“I’m… sorry,” I whisper, voice barely audible over the music. “I didn’t mean to...”
Kael shakes his head, lips brushing my temple. “You’re mine,” he says softly, possessive, protective. “You act how you need to survive. But remember...control. That is the difference between surviving and chaos. Between protecting yourself and hurting someone who doesn’t deserve it.”
I nod again, wolf settling slightly, muscles relaxing, adrenaline ebbing. “I… I’ll learn,” I whisper.
Kael presses a kiss to the top of my head, hand still resting on my lower back, grounding, claiming. “You are my mate,” he murmurs. “Strong, wild, dangerous, beautiful. And I will always protect you. Always. But you have to trust me to guide you. Always.”
I inhale shakily, chest still pounding, wolf still purring low beneath my skin, resting but alert. “I… I do,” I whisper.
He tilts my chin up, silver eyes locking on mine, dangerous, molten, and full of possessive heat. “Good,” he says softly, voice a growl. “Because I don’t ever want to see you lose control like that again. Not in public. Not anywhere you can be hurt. Not anywhere I cannot reach you instantly.”
I shiver, chest tightening with a mixture of desire, fear, and relief. Wolf alert and satisfied in small part, adrenaline fading, tension settling into warmth as Kael steps closer, pressing his body against mine, protective, claiming, grounding.
The club fades around us, lights and music blending into a distant pulse. Wolf and Alpha, mate and protector, tethered and bound, standing amidst the chaos of the city and the danger that never rests. My pulse finally slows, wolf calming, and for the first time since the nightclub erupted, I feel safe.
Kael murmurs softly, lips brushing my temple. “Come on, Lyra. Let’s get out of here before anyone else thinks to test you.”
I nod, chest still heaving, wolf finally resting fully beneath my skin, and together, we move through the nightclub, out into the rain-soaked streets, tethered, claimed, and ready to face whatever the city and our lives throws at us next.
