CHAPTER 153

CHAPTER 153
~THE TASTE OF MEMORIES~

The door to their bedroom clicked shut, sealing them in a world of moonlit silence. The echoes of celebration from the living room— the sweet, intoxicating scent of the Queen of the Night, the lingering warmth of their friends' joy, faded into a distant memory.

Here, it was just them. The air was still, charged with a new, profound energy.

Cassandra stood, her back against the door, the cool weight of the engagement ring a thrilling shock against her skin. In her hands, she still cradled the miraculous flower, its ivory petals glowing in the dark. Killian stood before her, having shed his suit jacket. His gaze was fixed on her, intense and reverent, as if seeing her for the very first time.

He didn’t speak. He simply closed the distance, his hands coming up to gently take the blossom from her. He carried it to the bedside table as if it were made of glass and laid it down with a tenderness that made her heart ache.

Then he returned to her, his hands rising once more to frame her face. His thumbs, rough with the memory of a thousand battles, stroked her cheeks with unbearable softness.

“My fiancée!” He whispered, the word a reverent prayer in the quiet room.

A fresh wave of emotion washed over her. “Your fiancée.” She confirmed, her voice husky.

He kissed her then. It was a kiss that tasted of twenty years of history. Of shared scraped knees and silent understandings in crowded rooms. It was a kiss that sealed a promise they had unknowingly made to each other as children.

When they broke apart, he didn’t let her go. He simply took her hand and led her out onto their balcony. The night air was cool, the sky a vast, star-dusted canopy. He had prepared this, too. A thick woven blanket was spread on the floor, and two large pillows rested against the railing. A bottle of champagne sat in a bucket of ice.

“When—” She started, but he shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips.

“A good fiance is always prepared.” He said, his voice low. He popped the champagne and poured them each a glass.

They sank onto the blanket, shoulders and hips pressed together for warmth and closeness. For a long moment, they just drank each other in silence, the silence a comfortable, familiar old coat.

“Do you remember,” Cassandra began, her voice barely a whisper. “The summer we tried to build a treehouse in the old oak at the end of your lane?”

A real, full laugh escaped Killian, a rare and beautiful sound. “God. We stole planks from the construction site two streets over. You insisted on drawing up blueprints.”

“They were good blueprints!” She protested, laughing with him. “You were the one who tried to nail them together with a rock.”

“I was eleven! I had ambition, not skill.” He shook his head, the memory bright in his eyes. “It collapsed the second we both tried to get in. We fell into that pile of leaves, laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe.”

The memory hung between them, sweet and vivid. They had been different people then. She was the clever, bold daughter of his father’s business partner. He was the charming, intense boy who watched everything. Their worlds had only overlaid during those long summer visits, but the connection had been instant and deep.

“You used to bring me frogs!” She said, her smile softening. “You’d cup them so carefully in your hands, your face so serious, and present them to me like they were jewels.”

“You were the only one who wasn’t squeamish.” He replied, his gaze dropping to his glass. “You’d just look at them with this… fierce curiosity. I liked that.”

He set his glass down, the moment of nostalgia shifting, deepening into something more potent. The air between them grew thick, charged with the electricity of the present. The past was a foundation, but the future was a current pulling them under.

His eyes, dark and intent in the moonlight, found hers. The playful glint was gone, replaced by a smoldering heat that made her breath catch.

He reached out, not for her hand, but to trace the line of her jaw with his knuckles, a touch so light it was almost not there.

“I’m not that boy with the frogs anymore, Kitten~” He murmured, his voice a low rasp that vibrated through her.

“I know.” She whispered, her own voice unsteady.

“And this…” His knuckles trailed down the column of her throat, over the frantic pulse beating there. “…isn’t that treehouse.”

His touch was deliberate, possessive, setting every nerve ending alight. He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, but she was rooted to the spot, captivated. This time, when his lips met hers, it was nothing like the first kiss.

It was a conquest.

It was deep, hungry, and tasting of champagne and a decades-long wait. It was the kiss of a man claiming what was always his. A groan rumbled in his chest, and his hands left her face to slide into her hair, tilting her head to deepen the angle, to taste her more completely.

She met his hunger with her own, her fingers clutching at the soft fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer.

The careful control he wore like armor was crumbling, and the raw need beneath was terrifying and exhilarating. He broke the kiss, his breathing ragged, his forehead resting against hers. His eyes were closed, his lashes dark against his skin.

“I have wanted you,” He breathed, the words a confession torn from the deepest part of him. “Since I knew what wanting was.”

His hands slid from her hair, down her back, pressing her against him so she could feel the hard, undeniable evidence of that want against her stomach. A shockwave of pure desire shot through her.

“Killian!” She gasped, her own control unraveling.

His name was a permission he didn’t need but took anyway. His mouth found hers again, more urgent now. His hands were everywhere, learning the landscape of her as if memorizing it for battle.

They slid under the hem of her dress, his calloused palms rough and unbearably exciting against the soft skin of her thighs. She arched into him, a silent plea for more.

He answered by shifting them, lowering her back onto the soft blanket without ever breaking the kiss. The stars spun above them, distant witnesses to their long-awaited union. He settled over her, his weight a delicious anchor, one knee pressed between hers.

He tore his mouth from hers to blaze a trail of hot, open-mouthed kisses down her throat, to the sensitive hollow at its base. Her head fell back, a moan escaping her as his teeth grazed her skin. His hands found the zipper of her dress, and he drew it down with a slow, deliberate rasp that was louder than any sound in the night.

“I want to see you!” He growled against her skin, his voice thick with need. “All of you. Under the stars.”

He helped her shrug the dress from her shoulders, peeling it down until she was bared to the waist. The cool night air pebbled her skin, but his gaze was hot as it devoured her. He looked at her with a reverence that bordered on worship, mixed with a possessiveness that made her core clench with anticipation.

“You are so beautiful.” He breathed, lowering his head to take a taut peak into his mouth.

She cried out, her fingers tangling in his hair as he lavished her with his tongue, kissing and sucking until she was writhing beneath him, mindless with need. He paid equal attention to its twin, his hand cupping and kneading while his mouth worked its magic.

Her own hands were frantic, pulling his shirt from his trousers, desperate to feel his skin. He obliged, sitting back on his heels to pull the shirt over his head and toss it aside. The moonlight carved the hard planes of his chest and abdomen. She reached for him, tracing the lines of muscle, learning the body of the man who had been the boy.

He watched her touch him, his chest rising and falling rapidly, his eyes dark pools of desire. When her fingers reached the waistband of his trousers, he caught her wrist, his grip firm.

“My turn.” He whispered, his voice a dark promise.

He finished undressing her, peeling the dress and her lingerie down her legs with a focus that made her burn. Then he stood, just for a moment, to shed his own remaining clothes.

She lay there, naked under the vast sky, completely exposed to him, and felt not shame, but a powerful, thrilling sense of rightness.

He came back to her, covering her body with his, skin to skin. The feeling was electric, overwhelming. He was all hard muscle and heat, and she wrapped her legs around his hips, pulling him closer, needing to feel all of him.

He kissed her again, deeply, as his hand slid down her stomach, through the folds, to find her core. She was wet, ready, aching for him. His fingers stroked her, parting her folds, circling the sensitive nub that made her gasp and buck against his hand.

“Please, Killian!” She begged, beyond pride, lost in a sea of sensation only he could create.

He positioned himself at her entrance, the broad head of his erection pressing against her. His eyes locked with hers, the green almost black with passion.

“Look at me, Kitten!” He commanded softly. “I want to see you when I make you mine officially.”

And then he pushed inside.

It was a claim. Slow, inexorable, filling her completely, stretching her in the most perfect way. A cry was torn from her lips, part pleasure, part relief, part the sheer rightness of it. He stilled, buried to the hilt, his body trembling with the effort of holding back.

“Okay?” He rasped, his voice strained.

She answered by tightening her inner muscles around him, drawing a guttural groan from deep in his chest.

That was all the encouragement he needed.

He began to move, a slow, deep rhythm that was utterly devastating. Each stroke was a promise, each thrust a memory reclaimed. This was the boy from the treehouse, the soldier from the battlefield, the man who had won her heart— loving her, claiming her, under the stars that had witnessed their entire history.

She met him thrust for thrust, her nails scoring his back, her cries growing louder, more urgent. The coil of pleasure tightened deep within her, winding tighter and tighter with every deep, sure stroke. He felt it too, his rhythm becoming more frantic, his own breathing reduced to ragged gasps.

“Come for me, kitten~” He growled in her ear, his voice raw with need. “Let go. I’ve got you.”

His words, his touch, the feel of him inside her— it was too much. The coil snapped. A wave of pure, blinding ecstasy crashed over her, tearing a scream from her throat as her body convulsed around his.

He held her through it, his own control shattering. With a final, powerful thrust, he buried himself deep and followed her over the edge, his roar of release echoing hers, a raw, primal sound swallowed by the night.

For long moments, they lay entangled, their bodies slick with sweat, their hearts hammering against each other. The stars looked down, impassive and brilliant.

Slowly, gently, he rolled them to their sides, keeping her tucked against him. He pulled the edge of the blanket over them, and they lay there, in the aftermath, wrapped in each other and the quiet hum of the city.

No words were needed. The past was forgiven. The future was theirs. Under the infinite sky, they had finally come home.
