Chapter 152

Chapter 152
THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT

The idea was born in the quiet hum of Julian's penthouse elevator, descending after a Sunday dinner. Elena, leaning against the mirrored wall, turned to her brother, her expression unusually serious.

“You’re going to ask her, aren’t you?”

Killian didn’t pretend to misunderstand. He just gave a single, sharp nod, his eyes fixed on the descending floor numbers. “I am.”

“And you know about her… stipulation?” Juan asked, his hands shoved in his pockets. “The flower?”

“The Queen of the Night.” Killian said, the name a soft sigh. “Selenicereus grandiflorus. Blooms for a single night each year. Predictably unpredictable. She thinks it’s a metaphor for something. Trust, maybe. Or patience.”

“Or she just really likes dramatic floral arrangements!” Levi offered from the corner, earning an elbow in the ribs from Daisy.

“It’s a test.” Killian said, a faint smile touching his lips. “And it’s hers. So I’ll pass it.”

“Then we will look after the best aesthetic proposal!” Alexander says, wrapping his arm around Isabella's shoulders and smiles at her.

“I know what Cassie likes so we can prepare as per her preferences.” Isabella says, her one palm on her growing baby bump and the other hooked around Alex's waist.

The plan began there, in the underground garage, amidst the smell of concrete and gasoline. It became their secret mission, their shared conspiracy of love.

~The War Room\`

The “War Room” as Levi christened it, was a back booth at a dimly lit pub far from Cassandra’s usual haunts. Spread across the scarred wooden table were not blueprints for a security breach, but printouts of botanical charts, lunar cycles, and climate data for the flower’s native habitat.

“Okay, so the blooming is triggered by a combination of factors!” Daisy explained, tapping a diagram. “Temperature drop, specific humidity levels, and a full moon. It’s not just once a year, it’s for one night a year, and it has to be the right night.”

“We need a plant.” Killian stated, his voice leaving no room for failure. “A healthy, mature one. And we need to simulate its ideal environment to force the bloom on our schedule.”

“I may have a lead.” Julian said, scrolling through his phone. “There’s a private botanical conservatory upstate. The curator owes me a rather significant favor. They have several specimens.”

Elena leaned forward, her eyes alight with the challenge. “So we got the plant. We bring it to a controlled environment. We play Mother Nature. Then what? You just show up at her door with a flowerpot?”

“No!” Killian said, his gaze distant, already envisioning it. “We bring the night to her.”

Acquiring the Queen was an operation that would have made any special forces team proud. The upstate conservatory was a fortress of climate control and security. Julian’s favor got them in the door after hours, but it was Killian’s planning that got them to the plant.

They moved through the humid, shadowy jungle of the greenhouse in tactical silence. Levi and Daisy were on comms, hacking the security feed loop. Juan and Elena acted as lookouts.

Killian, with a reverence one usually reserves for handling explosives, carefully lifted the chosen plant— a mature, healthy specimen in a simple clay pot and placed it in a specially designed, temperature-controlled case.

There was no alarm. No frantic chase. Just the quiet hum of machinery and the drip of water. They slipped out into the cool night air, the most precious cargo of their lives secured in the back of the SUV.

They didn’t take it to the penthouse. Instead, they used a climate-controlled storage unit Julian owned, normally used for storing vintage wines. It became their makeshift laboratory.

For weeks, it was the center of their universe. They took shifts. Killian spent hours there, often with Adrian, who was enthralled by the “top secret mission for Cassie”.

They monitored temperature, humidity, and light levels with a precision that bordered on obsession. Adrian made detailed drawings of the plant’s progress, noting every tiny change.

Elena and Juan handled the research, cross-referencing lunar calendars with meteorological data. Daisy and Levi were on “atmosphere” planning the setting for the big night, along with Alex and Isabella.

Killian was the constant. He learned the language of the plant. He knew its subtle moods, the slight droop of a stem that meant the humidity was off, the faint paling of green that called for a nutrient adjustment.

This man, who spoke the language of violence and strategy, now whispered softly to a flower, coaxing it towards a single, perfect night.

The calculations pointed to a specific Tuesday. The full moon was right. The simulated seasonal drop in temperature was scheduled.

The penthouse was empty when Killian brought Cassandra home under the pretext of a family dinner at Julian’s. But when the elevator doors opened, the space was transformed.

The entire living area was lit only by countless flickering candles and the silvery light of the full moon streaming through the glass walls. The furniture had been pushed back. In the center of the room, on a pedestal draped in dark velvet, sat the clay pot. And from it erupted a breathtaking, miraculous sight.

The Queen of the Night was in full, glorious bloom.

Dozens of large, intricate, creamy-white flowers had unfurled, their exotic, delicate petals seeming to glow in the dim light. The air was thick with an intoxicating, sweet fragrance.

Cassandra froze, her hand flying to her mouth. Her eyes, wide with disbelief, went from the stunning flower to the people gathered quietly around the room, Elena, beaming, Juan, with a rare, soft smile, Levi and Daisy, holding hands, Julian, looking uncharacteristically emotional, Alex and Isabella smiling knowingly, and Adrian, clutching his drawings, practically vibrating with excitement.

Then she saw Killian.

He was standing beside the pedestal, dressed in a simple, dark suit. In his hands, he didn’t hold a ring box. He held a single, perfect blossom, carefully cut and presented on a bed of dark leaves.

He stepped toward her, his usual confidence replaced by a vulnerable earnestness.

“You said once that you’d only accept a proposal from me if I give you a flower that blooms one night a year.” He began, his voice low and steady, filling the silent room. “You said it was about something rare. Something that required patience, care, and faith.”

He held out the flower. The scent was dizzying.

“It took a team of the people who love you most to help me find it and convince it to bloom tonight. For you. But the patience… the care… the faith? That was all for you, Cassandra. It always has been.”

He lowered himself to one knee, the blossom held between them like a promise.

“I have loved you in the darkness, and I will love you in the light. I will be your partner, your protector, and your family, for every single night of the year. Cassandra Kinsley.” He said, his voice thick with emotion. “Will you marry me?”

Tears streamed down Cassandra’s face, catching the candlelight. She looked at the incredible flower, then at the man she loved— the soldier, the guardian, the patient gardener of their happiness— kneeling before her, offering her a miracle he had willed into existence just for her.

She didn’t hesitate. She took the flower, its petals soft against her skin, and reached for him.

“Yes!” She whispered, her voice breaking. “Yes, Killian King. A thousand times, yes.”

As he slid the ring onto her finger— a simple, stunning band that suited her perfectly, a cheer erupted in the room. But Cassandra heard none of it. She was lost in the scent of the night-blooming flower and the feel of his lips on hers, sealing a promise made under the light of a full moon and a queen’s rare bloom.
