"No! Ethan!" Alex screamed, his voice cracking with terror. The gunshot still echoed in his ears as he ran blindly through the woods, tears blurring his vision. He didn't know where he was going, only that he had to get away. He had to survive.
He stumbled through the darkness, his legs burning, his lungs aching. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig sent a jolt of fear through him. He imagined Sara lurking behind every tree, ready to pounce.
Finally, he collapsed at the base of a large tree, his body trembling. He buried his face in his hands and sobbed, the weight of everything crashing down on him. Ethan was gone. It was all his fault.
He stayed there for what felt like hours, lost in his grief. Then, he heard a voice.
"Alex? Alex, are you there?"
He froze, his heart pounding. It couldn't be Sara. Her voice was different.
"Alex, it's me, Sophia," the voice called again, closer this time. "Are you okay?"
Sophia? What was she doing here?
He hesitated for a moment, then stood up, his legs shaky. "Sophia?" he called back, his voice hoarse. "Is that really you?"
A figure emerged from the trees, her face pale in the moonlight. It was Sophia, just as he remembered her.
"Alex!" she cried, running toward him. "Oh my god, are you okay? What happened?"
He ran to her, relief washing over him. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her shoulder.
"Ethan… she… she shot him," he sobbed, his voice muffled.
Sophia held him tight, her hand stroking his hair. "I know, Alex," she said softly. "I know."
He pulled away, his eyes searching her face. "How do you know?"
"The police found the car," she explained. "They're looking for you. I had to find you first."
"The police?" Alex asked, his heart sinking. "But we can't go to the police. Not yet."
"I know," Sophia said. "That's why I'm here. I'm going to help you."
She took his hand and led him deeper into the woods, away from the road. They walked in silence for a while, Alex struggling to keep up.
Finally, they reached a small clearing. Sophia stopped and turned to him, her eyes filled with concern.
"Are you hungry?" she asked. "I brought some food."
Alex realized that he hadn't eaten in hours. His stomach growled at the thought of food.
Sophia pulled a backpack off her shoulder and opened it, revealing sandwiches, fruit, and water. Alex grabbed a sandwich and devoured it, his hunger overwhelming.
"Thank you, Sophia," he said, his mouth full. "You're a lifesaver."
Sophia smiled sadly. "I just want to help," she said. "I want you both to be happy."
Alex looked at her, his heart aching. He had hurt her so much, and yet she was still here for him.
"I'm so sorry, Sophia," he said, his voice filled with regret. "I never meant to hurt you."
Sophia shook her head. "It's okay, Alex," she said. "I understand. You had to follow your heart."
"But I hurt you," Alex insisted. "I left you at the altar."
"I know," Sophia said. "But I'm not mad. I want you to be happy, even if it's not with me."
Tears welled up in Alex's eyes. Sophia was truly an amazing person. He didn't deserve her.
"What are we going to do?" he asked, changing the subject. "The police are looking for us. Sara's still out there."
"I have a plan," Sophia said. "But you're not going to like it."
She explained that she had a friend who lived in another state, far away from all this. He was willing to help them, to give them a place to stay until things cooled down.
"But it means leaving everything behind," Sophia said. "Your family, your friends… everything."
Alex hesitated. He didn't want to run away. He wanted to face his problems, to fight for his love. But he knew that Sophia was right. It was the only way to protect himself, to protect Ethan's memory.
"Okay," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Let's do it."
Sophia smiled. "Good," she said. "We leave tonight."
They spent the rest of the day hiding in the woods, waiting for nightfall. Sophia told stories about her life, about her dreams and her hopes for the future. Alex listened, grateful for the distraction.
As darkness fell, they set off, walking through the woods toward Sophia's car. The air was thick with tension, and Alex couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
They reached the car without incident and climbed inside, relief washing over them. Sophia started the engine and pulled away from the curb, heading toward the highway.
As they drove, Alex couldn't help but think about Ethan. He wondered where he was, if he was safe. He prayed that he was still alive.
Suddenly, Sophia slammed on the brakes, sending them lurching forward. Alex looked up, startled.
"What's wrong?" he asked, his heart pounding.
Sophia pointed to something in the distance. A roadblock. Police cars, flashing lights, and officers with guns drawn.
"They're waiting for us," Sophia said, her voice trembling. "They know we're coming."
Alex's mind raced. They were trapped. There was nowhere to go.
"What do we do?" he asked, his voice filled with despair.
Sophia took a deep breath. "I have an idea," she said. "But it's crazy."
She explained that there was an old dirt road that ran parallel to the highway. It was rough and bumpy, but it might be their only chance.
"But it's dangerous," Alex said. "We could get lost, or worse."
"I know," Sophia said. "But we have to try. It's our only chance."
Alex hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay," he said. "Let's do it."
Sophia made a sharp turn, leaving the highway and heading down the dirt road. The car bounced and rattled, the suspension groaning under the strain.
They drove for what felt like hours, the road getting rougher and more treacherous with each passing mile. Alex clung to his seat, his knuckles white.
Suddenly, the car hit a large bump, sending them flying into the air. When they landed, there was a loud crack, and the car lurched to a stop.
"What happened?" Alex asked, his voice trembling.
Sophia got out of the car and inspected the damage. "We blew a tire," she said, her face grim. "We're stranded."
Alex's heart sank. They were miles from anywhere, with no way to escape. Sara was still out there, and now the police were closing in. They were doomed.
As if on cue, a pair of headlights appeared in the distance, heading straight for them. Alex squinted, trying to make out the car. It wasn't a police car. It was a black SUV, and it was coming fast. Very fast. "Sophia," Alex said, his voice urgent.
"Get down!" But before Sophia could react, the SUV swerved off the road and headed straight for them. There was a deafening crash, and everything went black. When Alex woke up, he was lying on the ground, his head throbbing.
Sophia was nowhere to be seen. And standing over him, with a sinister smile on her face, was Sara. But she wasn't alone. Standing beside her was Ethan. But it wasn't the Ethan he knew and loved.
This Ethan was cold, distant, and his eyes were filled with a darkness that Alex had never seen before. "Hello, Alex," Ethan said, his voice chillingly calm. "Welcome to the family."
