Chapter 50
Savannah's POV
“Please, forgive me. What happened to the book? How did it disappear? Is there a way to find it?”
“The Priestess was killed. Someone stole the book, but there were no signs pointing to anybody. There are some theories, but no evidence. All I know is that a Seer could only find it.”
“What are the theories?”
“The one that makes sense the most is that the demons stole it and gave it to Hades to hide it in the deepest, darkest part of Hell. Nobody believes that because no God had been seen ever since they gave up their most lethal and harmful objects. The next theory is that someone with enough power and greed stole it. Some say it was the humans who were cursed by Iris Russeau.”
At the mention of that name, something inside me stirred. I was talking to a woman, but she was already dead. She told me that she was my ancestor. That meant Dalia was my relative? Why would she keep that a secret? What was her goal really? What got me thinking was the Saint's reaction.
“You don't believe this, do you?”
“No.”
“What do you think? What's the truth?”
“I think someone close to all this stole it. Someone that nobody suspected.”
“Why?”
“For power.”
For a moment everything went blank. I was with a woman who looked just like me, or did I look like her? I didn't know. Men were surrounding us. One of them was Gabriel, I didn't recognize the others. Then the scene changed. I saw Dalia talking to someone. Then I was face to face with the same woman again. She was my grandma. My mind was screaming at me to stop. It felt like my head would split into two any minute. The more I fought through the pain, the more memories surfaced. I could feel someone shaking me, but I paid no attention to the person. This was my only chance to get my memories back. An eternity later the pain subsided. I was back in the Library, now laying on the cold floor, with the woman kneeling beside me.
“I remember everything.”
“How did you do that, Savannah Rose? I know I told you that you can regain your memories with sheer willpower, but I could never imagine someone getting back the part they gave up in order to unlock their angel powers. You are a true miracle.”
“It doesn't matter. Dalia read the book.”
“What do you mean?”
“I had a vision before I lost my memories. She doesn't have the book, but she had it.”
“When was that?”
“She was just a teenager.”
“The time fits. Around that time the Priestess was killed. Do you know who gave it to her?”
“No, she said she found it. Is there a place where I can be alone in peace. I think it's time for me to get the information I need.”
“What are you planning to do?”
“To see the past. To figure out who stole the book. And if there's someone else helping Dalia. I know now who the traitor witch is and when I get my hands on her she'll pay.”
“Savannah Rose, there are no Seers who can see the past.”
“There aren't supposed to be any who see the present either and yet here I am. I have nothing to lose.”
“Come with me and be careful.”
She showed me a seemingly abandoned room at the back of the Library. Now that I got my memories back, I needed to find out as much as I could before tomorrow. I needed leverage on Dalia. Everything was quiet. Exactly what I needed. I envisioned Dalia as a teenage girl. I imagined her finding the book. Once the picture was clear I dived deeper, further into the past. I had no idea what I was doing, but it was a gut feeling. I was right.
“You're here again.”
“I told you I'd come back and visit you.”
“You barely visit me anymore.”
“It's not as easy as you might think. I need to divert attention from myself.”
“They would never figure this out.”
“You can never know. Anyway, I got you something. Something that can change our fate. Read it, but then I have to get rid of this.”
“When can I see your face?”
“Soon, my dear. Soon. Wait a little more.”
“I'd wait for all eternity, my love. What is this book about?”
“Prophecies. We could burn this world to the ground if we wanted. We will burn it so we could rebuild it and rule it together. There are so many prophecies that can destroy this world. We need to focus on this one.”
“Why?”
“Because with this one we have the most chance for success.”
“But that's supposed to be fulfilled decades later.”
“I know, my love, but I don't think we'll succeed if we try the one before this. I'll look for that baby and we can kill her before she grows up.”
“What if you can't find her?”
“Then we'll try everything until our last breath.”
“We will and then we can finally be together.”
“We will be together, my love. I have to go now. Don't look back. Just a little more time.”
The steps were fading. This was when I realized that I was in Dalia's mind. In her memories. This vision was different. Then she slightly turned to the side. That's when I saw his face.
I came back to reality, knowing that I saw what I needed to see. Once I got my hands on that traitorous bastard I'd kill him. I trusted him, we all trusted him. I had to learn what he did with the book. They loved each other and no doubt they still do. Tomorrow I'll end everything. After tomorrow all of us can be together. In peace.
That stupid bitch and her stupid rules. Because of her I can't be with my soulmate. I can't be with the woman I love. I will destroy her, destroy the world and then rebuild it. I watched the book burn, I watched the prophecies disappear. One would think that an ancient book full of prophecies couldn't be destroyed. It could be if some moron had forgotten to enchant it. Idiots.
The book was destroyed. At that moment I didn't think I needed it anymore. The person who wrote that note clearly didn't know that the book was destroyed. With determination and utter rage I left the Library. It was the middle of the night. I clearly spent more time inside than I thought. In less than 24 hours all the madness would end. I knew that everybody would be devastated once I revealed the traitor. They played us all along. They enjoyed it. Dalia didn't need Jeremy. Dalia didn't need a witch to find the source. It was all pretense. Dalia needed to lose her powers to access the dark magic. What they didn't know was that she'd lose it once she tried to forcefully cross the veil. I played right into their hands when I left Heaven. Two could play this game and now it was my turn.
