Chapter 26 She's Not the Culprit...
Gerald was about to step forward, but was held back by Jennifer.
Jennifer knew that even though Gerald seemed harsh, she believed he would not do such a thing. Especially if it was true, as Gerald said, that he was Alex's biological father. Gerald would never do anything to hurt Alex. Jennifer had seen for herself and could feel how panicked Gerald was when he saw Alex injured when they arrived at Captain Bryan's house and then at the hospital, and at the hospital, Gerald always looked after Alex. So Jennifer believed what she saw and what her heart told her.
"Captain Bryan, I'm sure Gerald wouldn't do it. I know Gerald wouldn't hurt his own flesh and blood.
If it weren't for Gerald coming to accompany me home, I wouldn't have known what happened to Alex! The attackers fled after hearing our car arrive! So it's impossible that Gerald is the culprit!" Jennifer exclaimed.
"It's up to you, Jennifer, but as I said, this is only a temporary assumption! You'd better be careful of that man! Just look at his barbaric behaviour! I'm just worried that he will hurt you!" exclaimed Captain Bryan.
Gerald, who heard this, became even more emotional, "It's actually Jennifer who is not safe under your supervision! The proof? My child was hurt! Are you going to turn a blind eye to that, huh? Or could it be that you are the culprit, huh? How did they know Jennifer and my son were there? If it wasn't you who told them, then why are you accusing me now?"
"If I had done it, there's no way I would have offered Jennifer a place to stay. I would have helped her! I could have done it while they were sleeping! But I didn't! Because I'm not the culprit!" exclaimed Captain Bryan, who was also emotional.
Gerald shrugged, "How would I know? Maybe you were waiting for the right moment? So Jennifer wouldn't suspect anything? I know you're not as simple as you seem, Captain Bryan!"
Captain Bryan was silent for a moment, his face momentarily shocked, but then he smiled again. 'Does he suspect me? Does he know something? Impossible! But Gerald really can't be underestimated!'
"Then what about Martha and my gardener? They are your henchmen, aren't they? How did you know I needed a maid and a gardener, huh? What is your explanation, Mr. Williams?" Captain Bryan asked again.
Gerald stammered. Jennifer looked at him suspiciously. "Are they really your henchmen, Gerald? Is what Captain Bryan said true?"
Gerald took Jennifer's hand and held it while bowing his head slightly, "Listen to me, Jennifer, it's not what you think! I just..."
"You just wanted to trap and watch Jennifer so that you could come to her rescue and she would willingly stay by your side, isn't that right, Mr Williams?" Captain Bryan provoked him again.
"Shut up! That's not the truth!" Gerald replied harshly to Captain Bryan.
Jennifer pulled her hand away, "Then what do you mean, Mr Williams? Please don't lie to me, because I don't like being lied to!"
"Okay! Okay! I'll explain... the truth is..."
CRACK!
Someone forced the door open, and everyone turned to see that it was John, Gerald's assistant.
"John? What are you doing here?" Gerald was quite surprised that John had appeared at this moment.
But John refused to answer. Instead, he looked at Jennifer and said,
"Let me explain, Mr Williams. Forgive my boldness, Mrs Ross, for interrupting your conversation. But I couldn't just stand by and watch my master being accused of something he didn't do!" John glared at Captain Bryan.
“The truth is, when Mrs. Ross refused Mr. Williams’ offer, Mr. Williams, we followed you, Mrs. Jennifer, from a distance.” John took a breath before continuing.
“Follow me? Why?” Jennifer asked, confused.
"Because Mr Williams was worried about Mrs Ross and young Mr Alex! We even kept watching for a while until you went into Captain Bryan's house. Mr Williams also ordered us to keep an eye on Captain Bryan's house, and he indeed asked Marta, one of our servants, to look after Mrs Ross there! Mr Williams realised that Mrs Dan did not trust him, but Mr Williams could not stand idly by without protecting Mrs Dan, even from a distance! So it was not as Captain Bryan had accused. Mr Williams was also worried and panicked when something happened to Alex, which is why he asked one of the most famous and expensive doctors to treat Mr Alex and Mrs Dan! This included requesting tight security at the front. The aim was to ensure that the lady and Mr Alex remained protected!" John continued.
Gerald covered his face, and Jennifer looked at him.
"He did all that for me? And my child? Is that true?"
“Jenny, please don’t look at me like that… I was just trying to protect you, I didn’t mean to lie to you… I…” Gerald’s words stumbled, his eyes filled with guilt.
Unexpectedly, Jennifer kissed his cheek, “I know… Thank you!”
Gerald touched his cheek, still warm from Jennifer’s kiss.
Captain Bryan didn't give up and spoke up, "Jenny... don't trust him too much, he's a skilled businessman! A girl from a small town like you is easy to deceive! The truth is..."
Gerald's anger thundered, "Shut up! You don't know anything about me and Jennifer! I've been quiet all this time, not because I'm afraid! But I respect you because Jenny said you're her friend! So I chose to stay quiet and give in since you started talking! But you've gone too far meddling in our business, Captain Bryan! What's your real motive, huh?"
Gerald slowly advanced towards Captain Bryan, who took a few steps back.
"Jennifer, look! Is this the kind of person you want to trust? And you believe what this man says? He's her assistant! Could it be that they planned this and conspired together?" Captain Bryan refused to give up.
"I... I believe him! Gerald wouldn't lie to me!" said Jennifer, looking at Gerald.
Jennifer pulled Gerald's arm and held it. Gerald was stunned.
"Thank you, dear!" said Gerald softly and kissed her cheek.
"Sorry, Captain Bryan, you saw it yourself, didn't you? Your incitement has no effect here! Because it wasn't me who did it! I am looking for them! As for Martha and your gardener, they are safe. They are currently being treated for their severe injuries. Once they recover, they will definitely testify to you about what happened that afternoon at your house!" Gerald exclaimed firmly, suppressing his emotions.
"I'm not sure they will give you the real information, because they are your people! Could it be that you paid them to give false testimony?" Captain Bryan continued to taunt.
"You!!!" Gerald pointed his finger.
"Anyway, I trust Gerald Williams, Captain Bryan. So please, stop your incitement! As long as the evidence is not strong... Please don't come here!" Jennifer turned her body away.
“What did you say, Jenny? Are you kicking me out? But Martha… she could be the one who carried out the attack! And at Gerald’s behest, Jennifer, open your eyes!” Captain Bryan said.
Jennifer was about to respond when suddenly…
“It wasn’t her… the culprit…!”
Everyone turned towards the source of the voice and was shocked…
