Chapter 52
Chapter 52
William immediately nodded, his tone much softer than usual: "Okay, I'll take her home."
Evelyn didn't refuse.
They soon arrived at the parking lot. Just as they got in the car, William's phone received a message.
He picked up his phone and squinted at it.
Sure enough, the wild ginseng had been successfully bid on by Phoenix.
He felt incredibly disappointed. Gwendolyn's medicine couldn't do without wild ginseng. Without it, no matter how skilled Evelyn was, it would be hard to completely cure Gwendolyn's illness.
His fingers flew across the screen as he replied: "Keep looking. No matter what it costs, find other wild ginseng. Also, do everything possible to contact Dr. Phoenix."
After sending the message, his brows remained tightly furrowed, his face full of frustration, and even the atmosphere around him became heavy.
Evelyn sat in the passenger seat, taking it all in. She thought he was worried about Gwendolyn's health.
"Don't worry, Gwendolyn's condition has stabilized now. Besides, I've already found wild ginseng."
"What?" William froze in shock, looking at Evelyn in disbelief.
There was no trace of wild ginseng on the market. Where did Evelyn get it from?
Evelyn nodded: "I asked a friend to track down the wild ginseng. An hour ago, they told me they got it."
"They'll deliver it to me tomorrow."
Evelyn said this to avoid arousing William's suspicion.
After all, with William's resources, what couldn't he investigate? By then, he would surely find out she was Phoenix.
Such a coincidence?
William's eyes darkened. Phoenix had also bid on wild ginseng today. Could there be some connection between the two?
However, Phoenix had once saved Brandon. With the Taylor family's capabilities, it was normal that they could contact Phoenix.
Thinking that Phoenix might have competed with him for the wild ginseng today because of Evelyn made him feel uncomfortable.
If his suspicions were correct, then he...
At this thought, William pressed his lips together tightly and didn't ask further questions. He just said gratefully: "Thank you, Evelyn. With the wild ginseng, there's hope for Gwendolyn's recovery."
"No need to thank me." Evelyn waved her hand, her tone casual. "Once the wild ginseng is delivered to me, I'll prepare the medicine right away. After it's ready, I'll send it to the Brown Mansion immediately."
William looked at her, his eyes full of complicated emotions. He found Evelyn increasingly hard to read. She seemed cold, but always gave people surprises when they least expected it.
He stopped the car and immediately had someone transfer money to Evelyn's account. Soon after, Evelyn saw a transfer of eleven million dollars and was somewhat surprised.
William looked away, facing forward: "The extra million dollars is a small token of my appreciation."
Evelyn raised her eyebrows and accepted it without hesitation.
Before long, the car pulled up at the entrance of the Taylor Mansion. Evelyn said thank you and left.
As soon as Evelyn walked into the entrance hall, she saw Xavier and Hannah sitting in the living room. Seeing her come in, Hannah immediately stood up, walked over quickly, grabbed her hand, and her voice was full of concern.
"Evelyn, you're finally back! Are you okay? Willow just called and said you saved Gwendolyn at the hospital. What happened? Why are you coming back so late?"
Xavier also stood up and walked to her side, his eyes full of care and confusion: "Yes, Evelyn, what happened? How did Gwendolyn suddenly become critically ill?"
Evelyn, seeing their worried expressions, explained everything that had happened.
Xavier looked at her with some surprise and delight, but soon felt that Evelyn's medical skills shouldn't remain hidden. He immediately had an idea, and his tone became serious.
"Evelyn, what are your plans going forward? Since you know medicine and have such talent, why not become a doctor? Dad will open the best hospital for you, equipped with the most advanced facilities and doctors, so you can use your talents and help more people."
Evelyn shook her head and refused without hesitation: "Dad, I don't want to open a hospital or be a full-time doctor. I like being free and don't want to be tied down. But it would be nice to have a place where I could make medicine."
Thinking about making medicine for Gwendolyn, Evelyn had this idea. She had her own research facility abroad, but she couldn't fly back every time she needed to make medicine.
It would be much better to have a research facility here.
Hearing that Evelyn could also prepare medicine, Xavier was even more shocked. He slapped his thigh and laughed: "How did I not think of that! A few years ago, I acquired a pharmaceutical company called Vitalis Pharmaceuticals, which has a research facility. However, the experts there have rather difficult personalities. The company generates millions in profit each year, so I just let them be. Why don't I put you in charge of this company?"
Hearing this, Hannah quickly tugged at Xavier's arm, looking disapproving: "What are you saying? Even if you don't want to manage that company, let alone someone young like Evelyn. I don't want to see her get hurt."
But Xavier shook his head and looked at Evelyn with a smile: "Evelyn, the people at the research facility rely on their professional skills and think highly of themselves. They're all incredibly arrogant. Do you still want to go?"
Evelyn raised her eyebrows, immediately interested. She'd met arrogant people before, but hadn't they eventually been won over by her, begging to learn from her every day? Could these people be more arrogant than that?
Right away, Evelyn made up her mind and agreed.
Seeing Evelyn agree so readily, Xavier was very happy: "Great! Then, Evelyn, you'll take over as president of Vitalis Pharmaceuticals tomorrow."
Hannah, seeing that Evelyn had agreed, was extremely worried. Just thinking about Evelyn possibly getting hurt made her not want to talk to Xavier.
To better understand Vitalis Pharmaceuticals, Evelyn looked into the company's information.
That's when she learned that five years ago, the owner of Vitalis Pharmaceuticals had met Xavier a few times. Later, when the company wasn't doing well and was on the verge of bankruptcy, the owner had nowhere else to turn and sought Xavier's help.
Xavier, remembering their past connection, acquired Vitalis Pharmaceuticals and even hired several capable experts at high salaries to establish a dedicated research facility.
But at that time, Xavier had too many businesses on his hands. After the acquisition, he just found someone to manage it.
Little did he expect that once he stopped paying attention, problems arose, especially at the research facility, causing Vitalis Pharmaceuticals' profits to decline year after year.
Evelyn rubbed her throbbing temples. She already had a general direction in mind.
Early the next morning, Evelyn put on a simple white shirt and black casual pants and went straight to Vitalis Pharmaceuticals.
The driver dropped her off at the company entrance. Evelyn looked up. Vitalis Pharmaceuticals wasn't very large, just about ten floors, and the sign at the entrance looked somewhat worn.
