Chapter 64 THE PRICE OF THE TETHER
Ethan felt it before sound before thought before instinct. The tether did not pull.
It collapsed.
Pain tore through him like fire dragged across bone. His wolf howled inside him not in rage but terror sharp and unfiltered. He dropped to his knees mid stride claws gouging stone as breath ripped from his lungs in broken gasps.
Amanda.
Her presence flickered violently like a dying star.“No,” Ethan choked.
The fortress walls trembled responding to his agony. Shadows recoiled as his power surged uncontrolled raw feral desperate. He slammed his fist into the ground cracking stone veins spiderwebbing outward.
Andrew was already moving.
He felt the rupture through the Alpha bond like a blade driven between ribs. The certainty that something had gone irreversibly wrong burned through his chest leaving only one command behind.Find her.But Ethan could not follow.
The tether snapped again. This time it did not rebound. It anchored.Ethan screamed.
His wolf surged forward violently fighting to escape his skin as silver lines scorched across his arms spreading upward toward his throat. Ancient markings awakened against his will symbols older than pack law older than Alpha rule.
He collapsed fully body convulsing.
Inside his mind the world fractured.
He stood nowhere and everywhere at once.
Amanda stood before him but she was not whole.
Silver flames wrapped her form but they burned inward not outward consuming her from the inside. Her eyes met his filled with apology and fierce resolve.
“I am still here,” she said softly. “But the tether is changing.”
Ethan lunged toward her.
The space between them widened endlessly.
“What are they doing to you,” he roared.
Amanda shook her head.
“They are testing what I am willing to lose.”
The flames surged violently around her.
“And what am I losing,” Ethan demanded.
Her gaze softened heartbreakingly.
“You.”The tether ignited.
Pain unlike anything Ethan had ever known ripped through him shredding muscle tearing nerve unraveling spirit. He felt something ancient claw free from his core something sealed long ago for a reason.
The wolf did not resist. It submitted.
Ethan screamed as the beast merged with the tether itself fusing instinct with devotion with agony with oath.
Blood poured from his mouth as his body arched unnaturally symbols blazing bright as moons.
The fortress screamed.
Andrew reached him just as Ethan collapsed completely.
“Ethan,” Andrew shouted gripping his shoulders.
Ethan’s eyes snapped open glowing not gold but silver edged with darkness.
“It chose me,” Ethan rasped voice distorted layered with something else. “The tether chose me.”
Andrew felt it then.The shift.
The bond between Luna and guardian had rewritten itself using Ethan as conduit.
“What did you become,” Andrew demanded.
Ethan laughed weakly blood staining his teeth.
“A lock,” he whispered. “And a key.”
The markings flared again and Ethan screamed as power ripped through him uncontrolled. The ground beneath them cracked open revealing pulsing veins of Nexus energy drawn toward Ethan like breath toward flame.
Andrew dragged him backward barely holding against the surge.
“Stop fighting it,” Andrew commanded.
“I am not fighting,” Ethan gasped. “I am holding it back.”
Far below Amanda cried out as the chamber reacted violently.
The final trial responded to Ethan’s transformation.
The woman watched with narrowed eyes.
“The tether has evolved,” she murmured. “Unexpected.”
Amanda staggered as a new presence slammed into her consciousness fierce familiar shattered.
“Ethan,” she cried.
Her power surged instinctively reaching for him but the chamber absorbed it bending her energy away.
The darkness below laughed.
The entity beneath the fortress stirred fully awake now sensing vulnerability opportunity hunger.
Amanda dropped to her knees gasping.
“Stop this,” she demanded.
The woman shook her head slowly.
“This is consequence,” she replied. “The tether has awakened a dormant law. A guardian bound not by oath but by sacrifice.”
Amanda’s breath hitched.
“What did it cost him.”
The woman’s gaze hardened.
“His future,” she said. “And possibly his soul.”
Above Andrew roared in fury as Ethan convulsed again veins glowing eyes blazing power tearing him apart piece by piece.
“I cannot hold this forever,” Ethan groaned. “If she falls it will take me with her.”
Andrew clenched his jaw.
“Then we do not let her fall.”
The fortress shook violently.
The darkness beneath surged upward cracking the chamber floor.
Amanda forced herself upright trembling eyes blazing silver.
“Then I finish this,” she whispered.
The chamber split open.
And something ancient began to rise.
