Chapter 35 A Huge Weight

Chapter 35 A Huge Weight
ZARA’S POV

The moment Kai’s body hit the floor, every drop of air left the room. The sound was too loud, too final. My wolf lunged forward inside me, claws scraping against my ribs as if it wanted to tear its way out.

“Kai!” I screamed, scrambling toward him.

His body was limp on the ground. His eyes were rolled back, his chest rising only slightly, like his lungs were unsure whether to keep him alive. I grabbed his shoulders and shook him lightly at first, then harder when his head lolled to the side.

“Kai, wake up. Wake up now.”

Nothing.

Mira gasped behind me. Her hand flew to her mouth. Luna and Rex exchanged a heavy glance that made something cold settle in the pit of my stomach.

“What did you do to him!” I snapped at Rex.
“You saw it,” Rex replied evenly.

“I only opened the door. Kai chose to drown in what he saw.”

The fuck!!!

I wanted to hit him. The urge punched through me so fiercely that my fingers curled painfully into my palms. But I forced myself to breathe. Kai needed me more than my anger needed a target.

Luna knelt beside us, placing two fingers at Kai’s neck. Her jaw clenched.
"He's not dying!"

“He is alive,” she said.

“But he will not stay like this for long if his mind does not settle.”

“What does that even mean! Why is he not waking up?” My voice cracked, and I hated how small I sounded.

Luna’s expression softened.

“When Rex pushed the memories into him, it was like pouring the ocean into a small cup. Kai’s mind could not hold all of it. His wolf tried to shield him but the clash was too strong. He is stuck between consciousness and collapse.”

Rex crossed his arms.
“He will wake up. He is me after all.”

I shot him a look.

“Not helping.”

He shrugged.

Kai’s fingers twitched. My heart jumped.

“See?” Rex added.

I ignored him and held Kai’s hand tightly in mine. His skin was cold and damp with sweat. His breathing was shallow but steady. His heart beat weakly beneath my touch.

“Kai, I am right here,” I whispered near his ear.

“Come back to me. Please.”

His forehead pinched faintly, like he heard something from very far away.

Mira crouched beside me, her eyes wide and trembling.

“Should we get a healer? Or Dr. Voss? Someone?”

“No,” Rex and Luna said at once.

Mira flinched.

Rex continued....

"If Dr. Voss sees him like this, she will use it against him. And Zara.”

“But we cannot just leave him like this,” Mira whispered.

Luna stood and stepped back.

“We are not leaving him.”

I swallowed hard. The room felt too tight, too full of truths I was not ready to carry.

Still holding Kai’s hand, I looked up at Luna.

“You said you wanted to prove everything to us. This is your moment. Explain.”

Luna’s expression shifted. Something ancient, something tired settled on her features.

“Your fears are valid,” she said.

“So I will explain everything. No more riddles.”

She glanced at Rex who nodded and leaned against the wall.

Luna stepped closer.

“You know the burning silver cities we all keep seeing. Those visions are from the world Rex and I came from.” Her voice lowered.

“A world that ended.”

Mira stiffened. I felt my heart clamp painfully against my ribs.

“What do you mean ended?” I asked.

Luna’s eyes met mine.

“Destroyed. Consumed by the power you carry inside you.”

I froze.

"You lost control, Zara. And I lost you. Everything burned because the wolf inside you shattered everything in its path.” Rex said.

"And we want to stop you from going through that path again." Luna said.

“I do not even know my wolf,” I managed.

“How could I have destroyed anything?”
She suddenly raised a hand.

“Because it is not your wolf. It is your wolves.”

My breath hitched.

“Your soul was split in our world. Two wolves trapped inside one body. They fed on fear and rage until they became unstoppable. We could not save our world. So we came here to save this one.” Rex continued.

My hands trembled around Kai’s.

I wanted to deny it. I wanted to scream at them. But the dungeon flashed in my mind. The bodies. The blood. The chains snapping like paper.

My wolves whispering,
Let us breathe.

“Why tell us now?” I asked, voice low and unsteady.
“Because your power is waking up faster than we thought,” Luna said.

“And when something awakens too fast, it becomes unstable.”

Rex looked at Kai’s unconscious form.

“And because Kai saw the truth. He saw what happens if we fail.”

My chest tightened painfully.

Mira whispered.

"Then what do we do?”

Luna looked at me. Only me.

“You have to learn to control them. To contain them. To merge them before they destroy you.”

“And you must outsmart Dr. Voss before she forces your wolves to break free.” Rex added.

I swallowed hard. My pulse pounded loudly in my ears.

“And if I cannot?” I asked.

Luna stepped closer. Her voice dropped.

“Then the world will end exactly the way we saw it.”

Silence fell again.

Kai groaned softly, drawing all our attention. I leaned closer, brushing his hair away from his face.
His eyelids fluttered.

“Zara…” he whispered weakly.

Relief washed through me so quickly my eyes stung.

“I am here.”

He winced as if his head throbbed.

“Those memories… It was too much.”

I grabbed his hand tighter.

“Do not talk. Just breathe.”

Kai looked at me with tired, frightened eyes.

“Zara… you burned everything.”
The room went still again.

My jaw clenched. My wolves stirred restlessly beneath my skin.

I raised my head to Luna and Rex slowly.

“Then tell me how to stop becoming that version of me.”

Rex smirked a little, impressed.

“You always were blunt.”

Luna nodded.

“Very well. We begin now.”

I straightened my shoulders.

My wolves rose inside me.
Kai tried to sit up but fell back again.

“Zara… be careful.”

I gave him a small, calm smile.

“I will handle it.”

Then I turned back to Luna and Rex.

“Let us start.”

But deep inside, my wolves purred darkly.

As if amused.

As if challenged.

And as if whispering,

Let us see if they truly can stop us.
Fuck!!! Could I really do this?
