Chapter 31 THE SHATTERED RIFT

Chapter 31 THE SHATTERED RIFT
The Abyss isn't a hole in the ground," Kaelen’s voice echoed through the screaming vacuum of the rift. "It’s a hole in the heart of the world. And I’m the only one who can fill it with fire."

The interior of the Abyssal Rift was a nightmare of non-Euclidean geometry. Gravity was a suggestion, and the air tasted like static and old copper. In the center of this swirling chaos stood the High Priest. He was no longer human. His body had bloated into a ten-foot-tall, shadow-warped monstrosity. Dozens of translucent, screaming faces pulsed beneath the surface of his skin—the souls of the Academy mages he had sacrificed to fuel his godhood.

"You're late for the feast, scrapper," the Priest roared, his voice coming from a dozen mouths at once. He held a handful of glowing orbs—the essence of the Academy’s top scholars—and crushed them between his obsidian teeth.

"I see you're still eating leftovers," Kaelen said, his platinum-gold scales shimmering against the absolute black of the void. "The Academy always taught that mana was a gift. I suppose you decided to take it all for yourself."

"Mana is a gift for those with the stomach to hold it!" The Priest spat a glob of black bile. "Look at you. Still playing soldier in your shiny new skin. You were a boy without a spark, Kaelen. A mana-dead mistake. Did you think a few scales would change the fact that you are empty?"

"I'm not empty anymore," Kaelen replied, his iron-edged wings snapping wide to stabilize his position in the swirling current. "I'm just a very different kind of hungry."

"Arrogance!" The Priest raised his massive, multi-jointed arms. The darkness in the rift began to swirl into a singular, agonizing point of density. "I am the vessel of the King! I am the end of the duality! You are just a pebble in the gears of a god!"

"You talk too much for a man who's about to be evicted," Kaelen said, his eyes turning into slits of molten gold.

"Die in the silence you were born for! \[Void Wave: Erasure of Being\]!"

The Priest unleashed it—a wall of pure, absolute nothingness. It wasn't fire; it wasn't ice. It was the conceptual end of existence. Anything it touched didn't just break; it ceased to have ever been. The rift itself groaned as the wave approached, threatening to unravel the fabric of the planet.

"Master, get out of there!" Thorne’s voice crackled through the communication gem, distorted by the temporal interference. "Nothing can touch the Void! It’ll erase your core!"

Kaelen didn't dodge. He didn't summon a shield. He didn't even blink.

He planted his feet in the swirling chaos and opened his mouth.

"What are you doing?" the Priest shrieked, his shadow-form flickering with a moment of genuine confusion. "It’s the Void! You can't block it!"

"Who said I was going to block it?" Kaelen’s throat began to glow with a deep, Abyssal violet.

As the wave of erasure hit him, Kaelen didn't vanish. He inhaled.

The Void Wave, designed to end worlds, was suddenly sucked into Kaelen’s gullet like smoke into a furnace. The absolute nothingness met the absolute hunger of the \[Dragon Marrow\], and for the first time in history, the nothingness lost.

Kaelen’s body arched as the raw energy of the Abyss was ground down by his internal forge. The platinum-gold of his scales began to bleed into a dark, celestial purple. His wings grew larger, the edges now sharp enough to cut through the vacuum of space itself.

"Delicious," Kaelen whispered, a small wisp of dark smoke escaping his lips. "It’s a bit dry, but the aftertaste is pure power."

"No... no!" The High Priest stumbled back, his many faces screaming in unison. "That is the King’s essence! It’s the end of all things! How... how can a mortal stomach the void?"

"I stopped being a mortal the day you threw me into the pit," Kaelen said, his voice now a chorus of draconic thunder. "And as for the void? I grew up in it. I know its flavor better than you ever will."

"You... you monster!" The Priest tried to gather more shadow, his bloated form trembling with terror. "I’ll rend your soul! I’ll—"

"You've had five hundred years to talk," Kaelen interrupted. He was suddenly there—a blur of platinum and violet light. He appeared directly in front of the Priest, his speed bypassing the laws of the rift. "It’s time you learned the cost of a bad contract."

Kaelen’s fist, encased in a layer of concentrated Dragon Essence, slammed into the High Priest’s jaw.

The impact wasn't a dull thud. It was the sound of a mountain breaking.

The Priest’s shadow-teeth, forged from centuries of stolen mana, shattered like glass. Black blood sprayed across the void as the monstrosity was sent hurtling backward, his jaw hanging by a single strand of shadow-flesh.

"How?" the Priest gurgled, his eyes bulging as he felt his divinity leaking out of his broken face. "How are you this strong?"

Kaelen stood in the center of the rift, the Dragon Essence swirling around him like a royal cloak. He didn't look like a hero; he looked like the inevitable end of a very long, very crooked line.

"It’s simple, Priest," Kaelen said, his golden eyes burning with a terrifying clarity. "I'm the Meat Shield who learned how to punch back. And I'm just getting started."

The High Priest looked up, and for the first time, he didn't see a scrapper. He saw the end of his god. He saw the Dragon King.

The rift began to pulse with a final, violent frequency. The shadows were retreating, not into the dark, but into Kaelen.

"The duality is over," Kaelen whispered, raising his hand for the final strike.

Deep in the silence of the void, the High Priest realized he wasn't looking at a boy. He was looking at the new owner of existence. And the rent was due.
