Chapter 29 THE GATHERING STORM
Chapter 29 THE GATHERING STORM
The world is finally united," Kaelen said, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the war room. "Now, we just have to save it."
The Great Hall of the Western Ridge was no longer a dusty mining chamber. It had become the heart of a world in transition. Platinum-gold scales shimmered beneath Kaelen’s cloak as he leaned over the command table. Surrounding him was a sight no historian would have believed: the Elven Queen, the Commander of the mutinous Royal Knights, and the leaders of the Free Scrapper Guilds.
"Master, the air is changing," Thorne said, his hand resting on the hilt of his hammer. "The \[Abyss-Slayer\] core in my chest is vibrating so hard it feels like it’s trying to jump out of my ribs."
\[System Alert: Level 10 Global Event Detected.\]
\[Status: The Abyssal King is fully awakening.\]
\[Estimated Time to Impact: 60 Minutes.\]
"The system isn't lying, Thorne," Kaelen said, his golden eyes scanning the faces of his allies. "The entity beneath the crust isn't just a monster. It’s an extinction event. We have one hour before the sky falls."
"The Elven archers are ready, Sovereign," the Elven Queen said, her emerald eyes fixed on the horizon. "My people have spent centuries hiding from this shadow. We will hide no longer. Every arrow we possess is dipped in your Dragon Blood."
"And the Knights?" Kaelen turned to the Commander.
"Three thousand men have renounced their Church vows," the Commander replied, slamming his fist against his breastplate. "They don't follow the Light anymore. They follow the Dragon. Just give us a target."
"Your target is the sky," Kaelen said. "Jax, the Dragons?"
Jax stepped forward, his face pale but determined. "The Great Drakes have finished their migration to the peaks. They’ve sensed the 'Sovereign Presence.' They’re circling the capital as we speak, waiting for your signal."
"Good," Kaelen stood tall, his iron wings snapping open with a metallic ring. "The Aurelian Coalition is formed. For the first time in history, we aren't fighting for a crown or a treasury. We’re fighting for the right to exist."
"Kaelen!" Thorne pointed toward the communication crystal in the center of the table.
The crystal flared with a sickly, violet light. A projection of the High Priest—the same man who had stood over Kaelen at the Academy and declared him 'worthless scrap'—appeared in the center of the room. But something was wrong. His skin was translucent, his veins pulsing with a black, oily substance.
"Do you see it now, boy?" the High Priest’s voice was a distorted roar, a chorus of a thousand screaming demons. "You thought you were the only one who could evolve? You thought the 'Dragon Blood' was the only power in the dark?"
"I see a dead man talking," Kaelen spat. "I see a coward who hid behind a 'Holy' mask while he fed on the world’s rot."
"Mask?" The High Priest laughed, and the sound shattered the windows of the hall. "The Church was never the goal, Kaelen. It was the farm. We needed the fear. We needed the 'Purity Pulse' to ripen the souls for the King’s return."
Kaelen’s eyes widened as the \[Dragon Sight\] pierced the projection. He didn't just see the Priest; he saw the energy signature behind him. A jagged, abyssal link stretched from the Priest’s heart down into the very center of the planet.
"The vessel," Kaelen whispered. "Thorne, the man who banished me... he’s not just a servant. He is the Abyssal King’s physical anchor."
"I was the one who threw you into the collapse, Kaelen Aurelian," the Priest’s image distorted, his jaw unhinging to reveal rows of obsidian teeth. "I thought you would be a snack. I didn't realize you would become a feast. Come to the capital. Let us finish our business."
The projection shattered.
"Master, we have to go now," Thorne roared, his hammer sparking with black lightning. "If he fully awakens, there won't be a kingdom left to rule!"
"He’s inviting us into a trap," the Elven Queen warned. "The capital is a cage."
"Then we’ll break the cage," Kaelen said. "Thorne, take the vanguard. Knights on the flanks. Elves, take the high ground. I’ll lead the Drakes."
As Kaelen walked toward the balcony, the sky above the Western Ridge began to moan. The bruised violet clouds were swallowed by a pitch-black void. The sun vanished.
"Look up!" Jax screamed.
The sky didn't just turn dark; it tore. Millions of black specks began to rain down from the clouds—each one a demon, a twisted remnant of the First Tribes, falling toward the city like a storm of ash.
"They're everywhere!" a guard shouted. "The defense wards are failing!"
Kaelen stepped onto the ledge, his platinum-gold scales catching the dying light. He drew the \[Holy Light Sword\], the blade igniting with a white flame that pushed back the creeping shadow.
"Stand your ground!" Kaelen’s voice boomed across the valley, amplified by his sovereign mana. "Today, we don't fight for the Academy! We don't fight for the King! We finish what they started when they threw us into the dark!"
Thorne stood beside him, the scrapper who had been broken, now a giant among men. "I've been waiting for this since the first day I picked up a hammer, Master."
"Then let's give them a face-slap they'll feel for eternity," Kaelen said.
He launched himself into the air, his wings creating a shockwave that cleared the demons from the immediate airspace. Behind him, thousands of Elven arrows streaked into the sky, and the roar of the Great Drakes shook the foundations of the world.
The demons hit the ground. The first line of Knights met them with shields of dragon-tempered steel. The carnage was instant, a symphony of steel and screams.
Kaelen flew toward the capital, his eyes fixed on the black pillar of light rising from the Cathedral. He could see the High Priest—the King’s vessel—standing on the spire, his arms wide, welcoming the end of the world.
"Kaelen!" Thorne’s voice crackled through the communication gem. "The ground is opening! The Abyssal King... his hand... it’s coming through!"
A massive, mountain-sized hand made of obsidian and bone erupted from the earth near the capital gates, crushing an entire district in a single movement.
Kaelen gritted his teeth, his wings glowing red-hot as he broke the sound barrier. The suspense was a physical weight, a suffocating pressure that told him he was seconds away from total disaster.
"Today, we finish it!" Kaelen roared, his sword descending toward the High Priest.
As he reached the spire, the High Priest looked up and smiled. It was a smile of pure, abyssal hunger.
"Welcome home, Meat Shield," the Priest whispered.
The sky turned into a sea of fire as the two powers collided, and the world held its breath.
