Chapter 28 THE SIXTH MOLTING: SOVEREIGN SCALES
Chapter 28 THE SIXTH MOLTING: SOVEREIGN SCALES
My skin is no longer flesh; it is the history of every battle I’ve won."
The silver-oak erupted. What emerged from the Heart-Wood wasn't a creature of nature, but a nightmare of grey, translucent flesh and obsidian claws. It stood fifteen feet tall, its face a featureless mask of void, screaming with a voice that felt like glass grinding against bone.
"A Proto-Demon," Thorne roared, bracing his legs as the shockwave of the creature's emergence leveled the surrounding violet grass. "Master, the archives said these were extinct!"
"The Church lied about the extinction just like they lied about the origin," Kaelen replied, his iron wings snapping wide to shield Thorne. "It wasn't dead. It was feeding."
The Elven Commander crawled backward, her skin turning ashen. "The Mother... she has changed. She is a monster!"
"She was always a monster, Commander," Kaelen hissed. "You just called it 'divinity' because it gave you a long life."
The Proto-Demon lunged. Its speed was impossible—a blur of grey that slammed into Kaelen before he could raise the Holy Light Sword. The impact sent him hurtling through three silver-oaks, the wood splintering like dry matchsticks.
"Kaelen!" Thorne swung his hammer, but the Demon’s tail swept out, shattering the ground and sending the big man flying into the thorns.
Kaelen stood up from the wreckage, his armor cracked, his chest heaving. His blood, gold and thick, dripped onto the forest floor. The moment it touched the earth, the system screamed in his mind.
\[System Alert: Sovereign Blood Detected by Ancient Strata.\]
\[Final Catalyst Found: Essence of the First Inhabitant.\]
\[Commencing Sixth Molting: Sovereign Scales.\]
"AAAGH!"
Kaelen’s body arched. The obsidian iron of his wings began to melt, flowing over his skin like liquid mercury. The grey, bruised flesh was consumed by a blinding, molten radiance.
"Look at his skin!" the Commander cried, shielding her eyes.
From the tips of his toes to the crown of his head, Kaelen was being encased. Not in armor, but in scales. They emerged from his pores, shimmering with a platinum-gold luster that made the sunlight look dim. His wings reformed, larger and edged with the same indestructible alloy.

\[Passive: Absolute Elemental Immunity.\]
The Proto-Demon shrieked, sensing the shift in power. It opened its featureless maw and unleashed a torrent of concentrated, corrosive green acid—the Life-Drain in its purest form.
Kaelen didn't move. He stood in the path of the stream, his hands at his sides. The acid hit his chest and simply... slid off. It didn't smoke. It didn't burn. It didn't leave a single mark on the platinum-gold scales.
"Is that all?" Kaelen’s voice was now a chorus of thunder. "Five hundred years of feeding, and you still have the bite of a hatchling."
The Demon lunged again, its obsidian claws striking Kaelen’s throat. There was a sound like a hammer hitting a diamond. The claws snapped.
"My turn," Kaelen said.
He reached out, his hand moving faster than the Demon could track. He grabbed the creature by its grey, pulsating throat and lifted all three tons of it off the ground.
"You've been eating the Elves," Kaelen whispered, his golden eyes burning into the void of the Demon's face. "Let's see how you like being consumed."
Kaelen squeezed. The \[Dragon Marrow\] in his arms flared. With a sickening crunch of ethereal bone, the Proto-Demon’s neck collapsed. Kaelen didn't stop. He slammed the creature into the bleeding Heart-Wood of the silver-oak, pinning it there with the Holy Light Sword.
"Thorne! The chalice!" Kaelen commanded.
Thorne, bruised but standing, tossed a silver bowl toward his Master. Kaelen caught it, then dragged a single platinum scale across his own palm. The gold blood hissed as it filled the bowl.
"What are you doing?" the Commander gasped, her voice barely a whisper as she watched the Demon dissolve into black smoke. "The Tree is dead. We are dying. The link is broken!"
"I’m not a destroyer, Commander," Kaelen said, walking toward her. "I’m a merchant. And I’m offering you a new contract."
He knelt beside the dying Elf and held the bowl to her lips. "Drink. This isn't the parasitic life of a tree. This is the sovereignty of the Abyss."
"It’s... it’s fire," she choked out, but as the drop of Dragon Blood touched her tongue, the grey vanished from her skin. Her eyes snapped back to a vibrant, glowing emerald. Her withered hands smoothed, her strength returning tenfold.
"I... I can feel the earth," she whispered, standing up. "Not the hunger. The strength."
"Go," Kaelen said, handing her the bowl. "Give a drop to every Sentinel. Feed your Queen. The 'World Tree' is gone, but the Elves will live as the First Tribes once did—free."
The clearing fell silent. The black sap of the silver-oak dried up, and for the first time in centuries, the air in the Great Forest felt light. Fresh. Clean.
From the canopy above, a figure descended on a platform of living leaves. It was the Elven Queen herself, her crown of silver-oak branches falling from her head as she stepped onto the grey grass.
She looked at the platinum-gold Dragon standing in the ruins of her divinity. She looked at her Commander, who now radiated a power that was ancient and untainted.
The Queen didn't speak. She didn't argue. She walked to the center of the grove, her silken robes trailing in the dust, and slowly dropped to both knees.
"The parasite is dead," the Queen said, her voice echoing through the forest. "The debt of five hundred years is washed away by the blood of the Sovereign."
The Sentinels in the trees, the mages in the distance, and the survivors in the grove all followed suit. A sea of emerald-eyed immortals bowed their heads to the boy who had been sold for a copper coin.
"Our life is yours, Sovereign," the Queen declared. "The Elven Empire recognizes no King, and no Church. We follow the Dragon."
Thorne stood tall, his hammer at his side, looking at the thousands of kneeling Elves. "I guess the 'tree-walkers' learned how to talk after all, Master."
Kaelen stood in the center of the bowing empire, his platinum scales reflecting the first true sunrise the forest had seen in an age.
"The Elves are just the beginning, Thorne," Kaelen said, his gaze turning toward the North. "The Church still thinks they own the sky. They’re about to find out the sky is closed for business."
Suddenly, the ground beneath the Queen began to glow with a dark, rhythmic pulse. The System pinged with a frequency Kaelen had never heard before.

\[New Objective: The Final Ascent.\]
"Master!" Jax’s voice rang out from the communication gem at Kaelen’s belt. "The capital! The High Priest didn't wait for your return! He’s opened the Forbidden Vault! He’s summoning something that shouldn't exist!"
Kaelen looked at the Queen, then at his iron-edged wings.
"Let him summon it," Kaelen said, his voice cold and final. "I need something to test my new scales on anyway."
As Kaelen took flight, the Elven Empire rose as one, their bows drawn and their hearts bound to the gold-scaled God. The world was changing, and the final face-off was only a heartbeat away.
