Chapter 168 Goodbye Aubrey
Aubrey's P.O.V.
I need to get out of this house. I overheard the twins talking last night and know they plan to kill me. How did everything get so messed up? My dad said that, with how beautiful I was, I wouldn't have any trouble landing one of the mafia bosses. Ari was supposed to be that man, but he wasn't motivated enough. I even tried to flirt with Galdino, but he quickly told me to get lost.
I thought getting a law degree would give me a way in with one of the families, but I didn't realize how hard it would be. I slept with the professors who were willing, but many of them weren't, so I failed even before I got into the really hard stuff. I stayed in Chicago because I was too ashamed to come back with nothing. I lied to Dustin to get him to bring me here because I thought he would make me his woman. I didn't realize how sick he and Colton were.
I grab my purse and sigh. I want to take my things, but that would be a red flag. I put what I can into my purse and head downstairs.
"Where are you going?" Dustin asks as he walks out of the office.
"I'm meeting with one of Dakota's ex-security guys who has a grudge." I walk past him and reach for the door.
"Good. Hurry back so you can do what you were brought here for." I don't look at him as I open the door and walk outside. I get into my car and pull away. I have one more stop, and then I'm getting the hell out of town.
I pull up to the Kondrati compound and take a deep breath. I should let the chips fall where they may, but I've made a lot of mistakes, and one of them was pissing off Dakota. I'm lucky she didn't kill me.
"Who are you?" A man with a gun asks at the gate.
"I'm here to see Dakota. Tell her it's Aubrey, and I have something to tell her." He takes out his phone and makes a call.
"She'll be right out." He doesn't move away and keeps his hand on his gun as he watches me. Dakota walks out of the gate and up to my car a few minutes later.
"What do you want?" I swallow nervously. I hate to admit that even though she's small, she scares the shit out of me.
"I'm leaving town before the twins kill me. They had a dinner last night and were trying to get other families to join them in their plot to end you and Ari." She doesn't look even a little surprised.
"Yes, I know. Is there anything else?" I feel like I'm going to pee my pants.
"I overheard a man from one of the families saying he had hired an assassin. I'm not sure what family he's from or who he plans to kill, but I'm sure it's you, Ari, or someone in one of your families. I just wanted to tell you before I leave." Her face remains hard, but she nods.
"Thank you for coming." She turns and walks away. I feel like I can breathe a little easier without her staring at me. I head toward the highway, and the further I get away from all these families, the freer I feel. It's time to start over.
