Chapter 38

Allisa took a deep breath as she stepped out of the house of her benefactors. They had kindly given her some money to go out and get some fresh air, a small gesture of their goodwill. As she walked down the unfamiliar street, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of adventure and curiosity. The world she found herself in was so different from the one she knew.

In the distance, she noticed a cozy little coffee shop, its warm lights inviting her in. Excitement surged through her veins as she wondered if the coffee here tasted the same as the one in her universe. She approached the coffee shop eagerly, her heart fluttering with anticipation.

As she pushed open the door, the familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee wrapped around her. A smile formed on her lips as she approached the counter, ready to order. The pleasant-faced person behind the counter greeted her with a warm smile.

“Hello! What can I get for you today?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

“I’ll have a latte, please,” Allisa replied, trying to navigate the unfamiliar menu board.

The person smiled kindly. “Coming right up! My name’s Kevin, by the way. Haven’t seen you around here before. Are you new in town?”

Allisa hesitated for a moment, uncertain about revealing her true circumstances. Although her benefactors had given her some money, she knew deep down that she couldn’t rely on their support forever. However, she didn’t want to imagine a scenario where she would have to work to fend for herself. Instead, she chose a more straightforward explanation.

“Oh, I’m just visiting some distant family friends,” she replied, hoping to divert Kevin’s questions.

Before Kevin could delve further into the conversation, the owner of the coffee shop emerged from the back. He had an air of warmth and kindness that instantly put Allisa at ease. She couldn’t help but feel drawn to him, sensing that he was someone she could trust.

The owner smiled warmly at Allisa, extending a hand towards her. “Welcome to our humble coffee shop. My name is Jerry. It’s good to have you here.”

“I’m Allisa”. Allisa found herself reciprocating the smile. The genuine warmth in Jerry’s eyes melted away any annoyance or intimidation she might have felt. In that moment, fueled by an inexplicable surge of bravery, she found herself blurting out a question she had never intended to ask.

“Are you still hiring?”, She asked and Jerry glanced at her with a thoughtful expression, his smile never faltering. “Actually, we were just discussing the need for some additional help here at the shop. We’ve been overwhelmed lately with the increased number of customers. Are you interested in working with us?”

Allisa’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement. She hadn’t anticipated the possibility of finding employment so easily. This could be her chance to not only gain financial independence but also to immerse herself in a new community. She nodded eagerly, her heart buoyed by the prospect.

“Yes, I would love to work here! I don’t have any previous experience in customer service but I’ll do my best and I’m a quick learner,” she replied, her voice filled with enthusiasm.

Jerry’s smile broadened, his eyes sparkling with encouragement. “That’s fantastic, Allisa! Welcome to the team! We will arrange for a training session to get you started. I have a feeling you’ll fit right in.”

Allisa’s heart swelled with gratitude for Jerry’s kindness and trust. She couldn’t believe her luck in stumbling upon this coffee shop and finding a job opportunity almost effortlessly. She had a feeling that her time here would be filled with growth, both personally and professionally.

“You can start tomorrow. I’ll have Kevin clear out a locker for you and get you introduced to everyone else then”.

Allisa nodded with a smile. She wasn’t sure that she was going to do great but she knew she had to start somewhere and try to make a living here before going back home. She excused herself after saying goodbye to both Jerry and Kevin and made her way back to the house.
