Chapter 108
Chapter 108
Mihai PoV
I’m glad that Mae is awake, but being awake doesn’t mean that she is healed, she still has a long road of recovery ahead of her and she isn’t going to like it. Mae is the type of person who doesn’t like to feel weak. She hates not being strong enough to stand on her own.
But if she isn’t careful she’s going to get herself hurt, seriously hurt and I can’t let that happen. I have to protect her, even from herself.
The problem is, Mae is insanely stubborn. She hates it when people tell her what to do, she much prefers to make her own choices, and I know what those choices will be because she’s angry. She’s angry at herself, at the world, maybe even at me. But right now, anger is clouding her judgment and she’s going to get herself killed if she doesn’t listen to me.
But how do I get her to listen? I don’t think she’s ever taken what I say into consideration. Hell, most of time I have to force her to drink blood, and she needs that to survive, even if she doesn’t like the taste.
I walk down to the kitchen, Dren waiting by the door, probably fishing for news. He’s been worried, we all have.
“How is she?” He asks, eyes on me.
Heart been go see her, he reuses to enter her room uninvited, and Mae couldn’t approve him whilst she was unconscious. He understands her need for privacy, even whilst she wasn’t able to enforce it. I respect him for that. I couldn’t do the same.
“She’s awake.” I say, my voice barely controlled. “I’m getting her some food and blood.”
He nods, “she needs it, she has lost so much weight and she wants big to begin with.”
I frown, confused. “How do you know that when you haven’t seen her?” I ask.
He asks about her every single day, but not once has he gone into that room and sat with her, I know why, but it still bugs me. I don’t want her to feel abandoned.
“My father told me.” He says like it’s obvious. “He told me she’s all skin and bones. He told me she’s pale and weak.”
“She is all of those things.” I agree with a short bob of my head, “but she’ll bounce back, we will all make sure of it.”
He turns away from me and walks into the kitchen, “what does she like to eat? I’ll make it while you prepare the blood.”
I smirk, it’s nice to see him help out. He must have felt as powerless as me whilst Mae was fighting the poison. And I felt fucking useless to her.
But now she’s awake I have purpose again, I can train her back to how she was, build up her weight, give her back her confidence. I can help her with whatever she needs from me.
I’m sure Luthor and Dren will be doing the same thing, they love her, they haven’t said it out loud but I see it in the way they think about her and their actions. They’ve done nothing but try and protect her.
I might not say it, but I appreciate them. I wonder if Mae does, she hasn’t said she doesn’t like them, but her heart is very guarded. She doesn’t trust people easily and it takes a while for her to warm up to the idea that people care about her. It’s a flaw, but one I personally understand. My own heart was guarded for years before Mae came along and broke me open.
“A light bite would be good to start with.” I say, following him into the kitchen, “maybe some toast and jam? That’s what she eats when she’s hungry but she doesn’t want to cook anything.”
He looks at me like I’ve grown five heads, “that’s very basic and there isn’t a lot of nutritional value to it.”
“I know that.” I snap, unable to control myself. “But it is what she likes.”
My emotions are all over the place, I need to reign myself in, but gods above, he annoys me when he looks at me like that.
I walk over to the fridge and pull out the jug of blood, it’s better if I warm it up first, she doesn’t like it cold like me.
I don’t think any newborns like cold blood, something about it doesn’t seem to agree with them.
The microwave will do, it’s the fastest way to heat it up and I want to get back to her as soon as I can. I don’t like being away from her for even a second.
Especially because she cannot protect herself right now and the hunter council have been trying almost daily to break through our defences and get to her. They’ve failed ever time, but I’m not sure how much longer luck will be on our side.
That’s the only reason we are alive, pure luck: Luthor knows what he is doing. He’s been fighting them for decades.
“If it’s what she likes, I’ll make it.” He said, pulling out the bread and jam. “But I’m not going to pretend to be happy about it, we need to get her to eat better.”
“You have to remember that she was brought up by humans, she doesn’t understand the nutrients that we need to fuel our bodies, but she will learn in time.” I say, warming up the blood.
I don’t look at him, I don’t need to, I know that he’s watching me.
He thinks I control her, but I don’t, she controls herself, and me sometimes.
She isn’t a scared little girl, she’s a warrior, and I’m proud of her.
But she does have a long way to go, and I’ll be here for every step she takes cheering her on.
