Chapter 109
Luthor pov
The hunter council are trying to get through the defences again, but I’ve made them impenetrable, they won’t get through. No matter how many men and women they send to fight us, they’ll lose.
I’ll happily kill all of them, and I do. I spend most of my time making sure they don’t get to my daughter. I won’t let them harm her again, not for as long as I live.
“Make sure you burn the bodies.” I tell one of my men, wiping the blood off my hands, “I don’t want any of them to retrieve the dead, they came here to hurt us and they’ve paid the price.”
The soldier nods, bowing low. “I’ll personally make sure they retrieve none of their deceased.” He promises.
I stare at the crowd for a long moment, wondering how many more days will be just like this one. I don’t take pleasure in killing the young, but if they come to hurt my family, I’ll kill them. They don’t get a second chance. Not from me. Not from Mihai.
“I’m going to check on my daughter.” I say, my voice firm.
The soldier nods again, “I’ll take of things out here.”
“Good, make sure there are no mistakes.” I say, walking away from him.
He bows as I leave, he knows his place and he will die for Mae if that is what I ask of him, and I ask it of all my men. They all know she is the reason we are here.
They know we came to protect her, and they know what she means to me. They don’t complain, they don’t argue. They just do their jobs.
My men are loyal. Every. Single. One.
I trust them with my life and the lives of my family.
The walk back to the mansion was long, but it gave me a chance to think. The witch said the serum would work quickly, but I’ve seen no improvement. Mae is still unconscious. There is no sign of her waking up and it is driving me insane.
I should have protected her better, but at the time, I didn’t think I needed to. It completely slipped my mind that she was a new born still learning to control her powers. She should have never been left alone with the enemy.
Our mistake almost cost her everything, and it still might if she doesn’t wake up.
Fuck, I need her to wake up. I can’t do this much longer. Not knowing what is happening inside her head is slowly killing me.
Mihai is in the kitchen when I walk in, Dren too.
“Tell me you have good news.” I say, slamming the back door.
Mihai turns, a glass of blood in his right hand. “She’s awake.”
He said two words, two words that almost made my heart stop completely.
“You better not be joking.” I say slowly, glancing at my son.
Dren smiles brightly, the first smile I’ve seen in weeks. “He’s telling the truth, dad, she’s awake, and she’s hungry.”
Mihai looks at me like I’m stupid for not taking his word as gospel, but I barely know this Nati, I’m not even sure I trust him just yet. I do trust my son however, and if he tells me she’s awake, I believe it.
“What are you making her?” I ask, she needs as much nutrition as we can get into her.
It didn’t matter if that nutrition comes from food or blood, but she needs a lot of it. She’s lost too much weight.
Dren clears his throat, glancing at Mihai, “I’m making her toast and jam because that is what she likes when she isn’t feeling great.”
Toast and jam? That doesn’t seem even the slightest bit beneficial for her. Have they gone insane? She needs something better than that.
I turn to Mihai. “Is the blood for her?” I ask, my tone clipped.
He nods, “I’m taking it to her now.”
“I’ll come with you.” I say, not giving him a chance to argue as I walk straight towards the stairs. “Did you warm it up?”
He follows me, leaving my son back in the kitchen, he’ll follow when he is ready to, most likely when he’s finished making the toast.
Fucking toast. Pathetic. Could they not convince her to have something more substantial? Probably not, neither of them are stern with her, even when they need to be.
Mihai always crumbles when she gets uncomfortable, and Dren is just as bad. They want to keep her happy, I want to keep her alive, we are not the same.
“It’s good you came back when you did.” Mihai says, matching my pace up the stairs. “She asked for you when she woke up.”
That made me stop, my eyes going wide. “She asked for me?”
I’m pretty sure Mae hates me, to begin with she wanted nothing to do with me. She’s a little more comfortable now, but I didn’t think she’d call for me. Dren maybe. Mihai definitely, but not me.
I never thought she’d ask for me.
“She did.” He says, continuing up the stairs. “She’s adamant that she wants to counter attack as soon as she stable enough to fight.”
“That could be a long way off.” I tell him coldly, “we have no idea how much the poison has aged her internally.”
“I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.” He doesn’t look at me, just keeps walking. “The witches will want to know she’s awake.”
“I’ll email them later.” I promise, “but first I’m going to see my daughter.”
Mihai turns to me, his eyes hard. “Don’t upset her, she could do without any stress right now, and don’t tell her how bad the attacks are, I don’t want her to worry.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” I grind my teeth, does he have any idea who he’s talking to?
He was the one who asked me for help all those weeks ago, I am not his subject. He needs to learn that.
I open the door to the bedroom and walk inside, Mae was sat up in bed, watching the door, and when I enter, she smiles. It’s small, barely a fraction of her old smile. But it’s something.
“How are you feeling?” I ask her, sitting on the bed beside her as Mihai hands her the blood.
She takes a small gulp of the warm blood and looks up at me. “I’m ready to fucking kill them all.” She said, voice hard.
That’s my girl.
