Chapter 87 – The Luna’s First Run
Chapter 87 – The Luna’s First Run
Jared had thought himself prepared.
He’d imagined a thousand times what it might feel like if the impossible happened—if Kori had a wolf hidden inside her. But none of those daydreams even came close to this moment.
His chest tightened as the sound of bones breaking and reshaping had him fighting the instinct to scoop her up and stop it, to take away her pain. But Zeus was there, steady in his mind, a low rumble vibrating through them both.
‘Do not interfere. She is ours. She is becoming what she was always meant to be.’
Then it happened.
The torn gasp that left her lips gave way to a growl, deep and primal, shaking straight through him. Fur rippled across her body, skin tearing away until the woman he loved was gone—only to be reborn.
Jared’s breath caught as she rose, unsteady but radiant in her new form. A wolf of burnished silver stood before him, her coat catching the moonlight like liquid metal, her eyes a rich molten brown that was undeniably hers.
Zeus pressed forward in his mind, his control almost slipping. ‘Mate,’ the wolf whispered reverently. ‘She is like us. She is perfect.’
Jared couldn’t move for a moment, couldn’t breathe. His mate—his human mate—was standing on four legs, her chest heaving, her gaze darting between him and the trees as if drinking in the entire world for the first time.
Then she threw back her head and howled.
The sound pierced through him, wild and glorious, making every hair on his body stand on end. It was freedom. Defiance. Belonging. And it echoed in his soul in a way nothing ever had before.
Emotion clogged his throat. Relief. Wonder. Love so fierce it threatened to break him apart.
He had to steady himself just to step closer, his voice low and reverent. “Kori…”
Her ears flicked, sharp and alert. She turned those molten eyes on him, and Jared swore the ground shifted beneath his feet. Because no matter what she looked like, no matter what form she wore, this was her. His mate. His everything.
Zeus pressed harder at the edge of his control, desperate to get closer, to run beside her, to claim her as wolf to wolf.
Jared didn’t hold Zeus back, couldn’t hold him back any longer.
With a deep breath, he let go. The shift ripped through him with violent urgency, his body tearing, reshaping, fur bursting across his skin. His boots and clothes shredded under the force of it until the Alpha stood on four powerful legs, his midnight-black wolf finally unleashed.
Zeus inhaled deeply, his golden eyes locking instantly on the silver she-wolf across from them. ‘Mate.’ His voice reverberated like thunder in Jared’s mind, thick with awe. ‘She is ours.’
Kori’s wolf blinked at him, wide-eyed and trembling at first, but when Zeus took one careful step forward, she lowered her head and sniffed the air before padding toward him. Her tail flicked once, cautious, then she pressed her nose against his muzzle.
The contact nearly undid him.
A growl of devotion rumbled deep in his chest before he threw his head back and howled, announcing her arrival to the night. The answering chorus from his pack carried through the trees, a chorus of joy and acceptance, but Jared forced himself to pull back enough to lay down a command.
‘Stay vigilant,’ his Alpha voice thundered through the mindlink, hard and unquestionable. ‘No one approaches. Not unless I call. Your Luna has had her first shift. She is not to be disturbed.’
A dozen voices answered at once, respect and awe thrumming through the bond, but Jared cut the link with finality, keeping this night for them.
Kori pawed the earth, restless energy buzzing through her, every muscle twitching as if her body couldn’t contain the rush of new power. Zeus lowered himself into a playful crouch, tail wagging once before he darted into the trees, daring her to follow.
She did.
The silver flash of her fur lit the darkness as she bounded after him, awkward at first, her paws tangling and stumbling, but she was quick to learn. By the third stride, her movements smoothed, her body finding its rhythm. By the fifth, she was flying, the forest echoing with her wild laughter that spilled into his head through the new bond forming between them.
Zeus surged forward, matching her stride for stride, guiding her through the woods with the sure-footed grace of a born Alpha. Together they weaved between towering pines, splashed through shallow streams, and leapt fallen logs. For the first time, Jared felt Kori’s joy not just in her voice or her touch, but deep in his soul, bursting bright and untamed.
And as they ran, Jared knew one thing for certain.
This was only the beginning.
The forest became theirs. Silver and black streaks wove side by side through the trees, Kori’s laughter echoing in Jared’s head through the raw, new bond forming between them. Her joy was contagious, spilling over into Zeus until his chest ached with pride.
‘Faster,’ she urged, her voice clumsy but clear.
Zeus barked a laugh in reply and bolted forward, daring her to keep up. She did. Her strides lengthened, her body adapting with instinct born of blood, not experience. She surged past him in a flash of silver, tail flicking smugly behind her.
He nipped at her flank, not hard, just enough to make her yelp in mock outrage and spin toward him. They collided, rolling in a tangle of fur and playful growls. Her weight pressed against him, her muzzle shoving into his neck, and Zeus rumbled his approval. She smelled of earth and moonlight, their bond humming like a living thing between them.
When she pulled back, eyes glowing like molten silver, he froze. She wasn’t awkward now, wasn’t human or hesitant—she was wolf, powerful and radiant, standing her ground with pride. His Luna.
Zeus bowed his head, a gesture of reverence that Jared would never allow in his human form—but here, with her, it felt right.
Kori bumped her nose against his with a mischievous huff before darting away again, challenging him to chase. He obliged, surging after her, their paws pounding in sync, laughter and devotion mingling through the bond.
For one night, there were no bears, no threats, no doubts. Just them—Alpha and Luna, mates running wild beneath the watchful gaze of the moon.
