Chapter 86 – The Awakening

Chapter 86 – The Awakening
A bolt of fire ripped through her bones, forcing a scream from her throat. Her spine arched, muscles seizing violently. The sound tore at Jared, but he held her, whispering her name, grounding her through the agony.

Her skin prickled as if lightning danced beneath it, heat blooming in waves that made her want to claw her own body open. Her fingers dug deep furrows into the dirt, nails breaking, but the fire only grew.

The whispers roared now, no longer soft or coaxing but commanding, filling every inch of her mind.

‘Kori. Come to me.’

Her vision blurred with tears. She couldn’t tell if the wetness on her cheeks was sweat or her own crying anymore.

Jared gathered her trembling body against his chest, rocking her through the tremors. His lips pressed to her temple, a desperate vow falling from him in a hoarse whisper: “Fight through it, love. Find her. She’s been waiting for you.”

The fire surged again, this time with purpose. Her body shuddered as her bones groaned in protest, joints stretching in unnatural ways. She cried out, the sound raw and broken, yet beneath it pulsed something undeniable—power, ancient and wild, clawing to be set free.

And Jared, despite the fear knotting his gut, held her tighter. Because he knew what she didn’t.

This wasn’t the end.

It was the beginning.

The fire didn’t stop.

It spread like molten lava through Kori’s veins, burning hotter, sharper, until she thought her body would rip apart. Her scream fractured into gasps, the sound swallowed by the night, her throat raw from the effort of holding herself together.

Then—something shifted.

Her hearing sharpened first, the chirp of crickets stabbing her ears like a thousand tiny bells, the rustle of leaves loud enough to make her flinch. Her sight followed, the hazy moon above suddenly sharp, every star etched against the dark sky as though it had been painted just for her. She could see Jared’s face hovering over her, every line of worry carved deep into his features, his lips moving though she heard his words as if they were whispered inside her own mind.

“Kori. Stay with me. You’re almost there.”

Almost where? She didn’t understand—until the pressure in her chest cracked open.

A sound tore free from her throat, guttural and strange, nothing human at all. She clutched at her stomach, but instead of pain, she felt power swelling inside her, wild and ancient. Her fingers spasmed, and for the briefest heartbeat, claws—actual claws—flashed in the moonlight before fading again.

Her heart thundered. No… no, this isn’t real.

But it was. She could feel it.

The voice from before thundered through her mind again, no longer faint but booming, filled with strength and certainty. ‘Kori. I am here. I am yours. Let me out.’

Her body arched violently, bones grinding, reshaping. The sound of it echoed in her ears, a sickening crack that should have meant agony—but beneath the pain, there was a strange rightness, a belonging she had never felt in her life.

Her nails tore at the ground as she panted, terror mingling with awe.

“Jared!” she gasped, her eyes locking onto his. “What’s happening to me?”

His hand cupped her cheek, trembling but steady. His gaze was fierce, reverent. “You’re shifting, love. You’re finding your wolf.”

Her wolf.

The words rang inside her, undeniable.

And even as fear tried to drag her under, something in her chest—something deep and primal—howled in triumph.

The world blurred at the edges as Kori’s heart thrashed against her ribs. Jared’s voice was still there, firm and steady, but it began to fade, melting into the background like a distant echo.

Something else was louder now.

The voice.

‘Kori… breathe.’

She froze, her chest burning as if she’d forgotten how. Her lungs pulled in a ragged inhale, then another, the command weaving through her like silk.

‘Again. Slow. You are safe. I’m here.’

Her breaths grew steadier, matching the rhythm that pulsed in her veins. For the first time since the fire ignited in her body, a thin thread of calm anchored her.

And with that calm came the change.

Her spine bowed as vertebrae cracked and lengthened, the sound both horrific and wondrous. Her nails bit into the soil, curling into claws that shone silver in the moonlight. Her skin prickled, then split, as soft fur pushed its way free, spreading like wildfire over her arms, her chest, her legs.

She cried out, but the voice was there again, soothing, proud. ‘You are not breaking. You are becoming.

Kori’s vision sharpened until the night glowed as bright as day. She could see every blade of grass, every twitch of Jared’s fingers where he hovered helplessly nearby. But she didn’t need him—not right now. This was hers.

Her jaw stretched painfully, teeth lengthening, sharpening into fangs. Her scream warped into a raw, guttural growl that rattled in her chest. Her body convulsed, shrinking in some places, expanding in others, until her body tore apart under the pressure.

She collapsed onto her hands and knees—or what had once been her hands and knees. Her paws sank into the earth, steady, sure. Her breath came out as a pant, hot air curling into the cool night.

Slowly, she lifted her head.

And there, staring back at Jared with eyes the same molten brown as her own, stood a wolf.

Her wolf.

‘Kori. We are whole. Finally.’ The voice filled her again, no longer faint or far away, but strong, resonant, alive. ‘We are one now. You are mine, and I am yours.’

Her heart swelled, a wild, uncontainable joy spilling through her veins. She threw her head back, and for the first time in her life, she howled—loud, fierce, and free.
