Chapter 111 Sweet
Quinn's POV
I quickly answered Grayson's call once I was outside the restaurant.
After all, I didn't want to risk Anton overhearing our conversation. It would drive him crazy if he found out I was talking to our boss's favourite ice hockey player.
"Quinny, where are you?"
I looked around before answering, "I'm at the chicken restaurant. Actually, there's something I want to tell you."
"Chicken restaurant? Do you want to eat chicken? You can ask me and I'll definitely buy it for you."
I bit my finger. "It's not like that. I'll tell you, but don't get mad, okay?"
"Did you meet Owen?" Grayson's voice rose.
"No, no," I replied immediately. "I passed the interview. I gotta work again. Three days a week at a chicken restaurant near your penthouse."
I anticipated Grayson's reaction by moving the phone away from my ear. But after a few moments, there was no sound, not even a breath.
Curious, I spoke again. "Babe, are you still there?"
"Ah, yeah. I heard you. Congratulations, Quinny! I’m so proud of you."
I rounded my eyes and opened my mouth wide. Did I hear that right? Grayson wasn't mad, but congratulated me instead?
Oh my gosh, I felt like I could fly right now.
"You're not mad?" I asked carefully, making sure.
Grayson chuckled. "Why should I be mad when my girlfriend got the job she wanted again?"
"I mean, you always told me to quit my job before. So I thought you would be mad this time too. Especially since I didn't tell you first."
"I said that because I didn't want you to be exhausted. But I was too shy to say it. So I scolded you instead of saying it nicely. I'm sorry, I was too jerk to admit that I loved you.”
"But I didn't ask your permission first."
"The important thing is that you told me."
"You're the first one who knew I passed."
I couldn't help but smile.
I even moved my phone away from my lips and shouted silently. Then I cleared my throat to neutralise my voice.
"Quinny, are you still there?"
"Emm yes, I'm still here. About that, it's okay, I forgive you. And thank you for understanding."
"I'm just trying to learn from my mistakes. I want to make you more comfortable in this relationship. I don't want to force you or limit you in doing whatever you want. I don't want you to feel controlled. If you want to work, then you can do that. And if you feel tired and just want to stay at home, then that's fine too. I support both as long as you're happy in our relationship."
Now it was my turn to chuckle. "Just so you know, that's the longest sentence you've ever said since we've known each other, babe."
Grayson chuckled softly. "Really? I think I can make it even longer."
"Don't, please don't. I'm afraid you'll become quiet afterwards."
We then laughed together. So loud that for a moment I forgot that I was in a public place, which made passers-by stare at me as they walked by.
I finally lowered my voice. "I appreciate you changing for the better! You may not be the perfect man, but you always try your best for me. I'm happy with that."
"Hey, don't thank me. Becoming a better person is my duty because that's what I want. And yes, you're right, I'm not perfect. But it's your presence that makes me perfect. I'm very happy with that. Thank you for showing up in my life, Quinny."
My cheeks felt hot when I heard those words. So hot that I had to press my cold hands against them.
"Okay, so now the interview is over?"
"Yes, it's been over for a while. But I still have to arrange the schedule for this week. I'll adjust it to your game schedule."
"Oh Quinny, what can I give you in return? I'm so grateful to have you."
I looked down and smiled broadly. "You just need to not disappoint me. That's all."
"I'll remember that."
"Mm-hm, okay."
"So what time can I pick you up?"
I looked inside through the glass wall, where Anton was already motioning for me to come in. "Have you finished your morning workout?"
"Yes. I just got home and called you right away because I couldn't find you at home."
"If you're not tired, you can pick me up in about thirty minutes."
"Hey, of course I won't be tired. When it comes to you, I'm never tired."
Grayson managed to make me smile again. But it didn't last long because I then saw Anton with his hands on his hips, shaking his head.
"Okay, I have to go now. I'll send you the address later. Be careful on the road. I love you, gray bear."
"I love you, Quinny. Muachhh."
I covered my mouth in disbelief and looked at my phone screen.
Gosh, it never crossed my mind that Grayson would give me a kiss over the phone like that.
It was so cute. I loved it.
Okay, now I had to discuss my working hours with Anton, who seemed to have lost half of his patience.
I went back into the restaurant and put on a guilty face. "Sorry. I had a very important call."
"From your boyfriend. Okay, so what days can you work? I'm free because I'm single."
I rounded my eyes. "No, it's not like that. It was from someone."
"Someone special who makes you smile. Okay, so what days?"
I smiled. "For this week, I can work tomorrow. But the day after tomorrow I can't because I have an important appointment to attend."
"A date. So this week you can work on..."
I tapped my forehead. He really made me speechless.
"So, do you agree with the schedule? Thank me later." He tapped a small whiteboard on the wall with a marker in his hand.
I nodded. I completely agreed with that. "I agree. Thank you, Anton. You're the best."
He rolled his eyes. "Okay. Then you can leave now because you don't start work until tomorrow."
I widened my eyes and stood up immediately. "But I'm being picked up later. It's cold outside. So can I just wait inside?"
He rolled his eyes again and threw the marker at me. "Oh, I hate being single."
I could only chuckle silently. Hmm, okay, it doesn't seem too bad working here even though there are no customers.
