Chapter 20 CHAPTER 20: The Quiet Between
Chapter 20 CHAPTER 20: The Quiet Between
Lucif's POV
I wasn't going to move as fast as the others. They were barely even giving her time to breathe. They all wanted her attention.
The kids that they were.
They could go ahead and try to win her over. I didn't need her. Not now. And probably not in a long time.
But the whole school was talking about her. I just wanted to keep my eyes on her regardless. To make sure that she wasn't going to go through anything that was going to be dangerous for her.
For some reason, I felt like she was fragile for anything that was happening to her so far. I saw it in the way she collapsed the other night. The way her knees gave away like they were rubber.
Andy wanted to be the one to carry her back to her room. And of course, the three of us couldn't go in there. The girls were going to sniff us out, and there was going to be a ruckus.
I stared over at the blondie on my thigh, watching Elizabeth as she had her lunch.
Alone, as usual.
I wanted to go and join her for some reason, but that would just be doing too much.
“Your attention is somewhere else,” the girl whispered, and I gave her a small smile. I didn't even want to be there with her, but she didn't have to know any of that. She didn't have to know that I didn't even know her name.
“I'm paying attention, trust me,” I muttered back, and she smirked, running her hands through my hair.
Elizabeth was in my head again. The way the students came to tell me that she was smiling with the other students.
The way they looked at each other. The way Kae touched her. I felt my hand slowly curl up in my thigh.
That was a reflex action. It had to be. There was no way I could feel so much for her. It was wrong.
Her attraction to the others was nothing subtle. And it wasn't useful. At least not yet.
I gently pushed the blonde off my thigh, as I didn't even wait for her to react, as I headed out of the cafeteria.
I needed to clear my head.
The next day, I had just walked into the library, when I saw somebody bent over a book.
Elizabeth.
My hands were stuffed in my pocket, and I walked towards her, with a smirk plastered on my lips.
I had barely gotten close enough to her, when her head snapped up, and she cocked her head to the side.
“What is it?” She asked, and I cocked an eyebrow.
That was quick.
The library was the one place that she felt that she had control. Over her mind, and over her brain.
I can't deny the fact that the little banter between her and Andy was one of the things that I looked forward to every day. And they had barely disappointed me. Every day was a new episode, and I was sure that even the teacher was having fun with it.
“You're distracted,” I said, and she looked back into her book like I was wasting her time.
“I'm busy. You can move. You're blocking the fresh air,” she said in a sharp tone.
I liked this side of her.
“No,” I said, leaning in. If I was going to block the fresh air, I could as well do that properly. “You're overwhelmed. Mind sharing why?”
She sniffled, sighing as she slammed the book shut, and put her hand under her chin as she looked up at me.
“Lucif Boston,” she said calmly. “What do you want?”
That was all the permission I needed to sit down beside her. She inhaled deeply, and I knew that she wanted to sniff on.
That brought a small smile to my lips. “I want clarity.”
She cocked an eyebrow. “From who?” She asked.
“You,” I answered without hesitation.
She watched me carefully. “I know that you don't waste words,” she whispered and I was glad that she knew. “So looking for clarity is new.”
“Not really,” I said, and I pulled my chair closer to her. She didn't argue. She was getting used to our presence.
A part of me was elated. I shouldn't feel that way. But I did.
“The power changed the way other people see you, right?”
She nodded slightly, agreeing with me.
“I noticed.” she whispered.
“And how you see them as well.”
She didn't say anything at that point. But her silence gave me the answer that I needed.
“So tell me,” I said, leaning in. I didn't like the fact that I was the one that had to speak more when I was with her. “What part changed first?”
She bit her lower lip, like she was trying to figure out the perfect thing to say.
She suddenly shrugged. “Everything changed at once. It has been hard. I've almost killed people. And then there are three people on cloaks that want me. I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to react to things.
I couldn't hold back my smile yet again. She was being honest. I was making progress with her.
My smile tugged against my lips, but she could barely see it.
I could barely remember the last time I smiled at a lady in school. And Elizabeth Siege?
All she was doing was complicating the way I felt about things.
That was more than wrong.
The only thing emotions like that did was complicate things. But in a beautiful way.
I couldn't remember the last time I felt like that. But the last time, things were more complicated than they were supposed to be.
And I didn't know if I was supposed to go through something like that.
Elizabeth smiled back at me for just a second, and I knew that she was in deeper danger than she knew as well.
She went back to facing her book, flipping through the page.
I didn't have a problem sitting there and just watching her. And she didn't ask me to leave either.
I could feel eyes on the both of us. And it was more than convenient.
For the both of us.
Especially when I felt like I belonged there.
