Chapter 40 Chapter 40
Leonidas’s POV
The moment she sat up, everything changed completely.
The wolves didn’t just freeze, they also bowed.
One after the other, heads were lowering, bodies going still as if something invisible was pressing down on them. It wasn’t fear–not exactly.
It was instinct.
Ancient, unbreakable in submission.
My wolf went dead silent inside me, not fighting, not resisting, just there watching.
Recognizing.
And that–
That unsettled me more than anything else.
"Sable...." I said carefully.
Her eyes lifted to mine.
And for a second, I forgot how to breathe.
They weren’t just blue anymore; they weren’t even just silver.
There was something else in them now.
Depth.
Power.
Control.
Like she wasn’t just seeing me—
She was seeing through me.
"I’m okay," she said softly.
But her voice–
It carried.
Not louder.
Not sharper.
Just... heavier.
Like the world itself was listening.
Kael exhaled slowly beside me.
'Well," he muttered, "that’s new."
Zander tilted his head slightly, studying her like she was the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen.
"She didn’t just stabilize," he murmured. "She evolved".
I didn’t like the sound of that.
Not because it was wrong.
But because it was right.
Caius stepped forward slowly, his eyes locked on her like he was searching for something.
"Sable", he said. "Talk to me."
She looked at him.
Really looked at him.
And whatever she saw it made something flicker in her expression.
Soft.
Almost… sad.
"I’m still me," she said.
Caius didn’t respond immediately.
Because that wasn’t what he was asking.
And she knew it.
The silence stretched.
Then—
Movement.
The Alpha from before stepped forward again.
Carefully this time.
Respectfully.
Very different from before.
"You’ve crossed the threshold," he said.
My jaw tightened.
"Stay where you are."
He didn’t stop.
But he didn’t push either.
"I’m not your enemy," he replied calmly.
Kael snorted.
"That’s debatable."
The Alpha ignored him.
His gaze remained on Sable.
"You understand now, don’t you?"
Sable didn’t answer right away.
She looked down at her hands.
Flexed her fingers slightly.
Like she was testing something.
Feeling it.
Then—
"Yes," she said quietly.
My chest tightened.
"Understand what?" I asked.
Her gaze lifted again.
And this time—
There was no hesitation.
"No one controls me," she said.
The words landed hard.
Not defiant.
Not emotional.
Just... true.
The air shifted slightly.
The wolves reacted again.
Lowering their heads further.
I felt it too.
That pull.
That pressure.
Not forcing.
Not commanding.
But present.
Always present.
Zander smiled faintly.
"Ah," he said softly. "Now that’s interesting."
Caius’s voice came next.
Low.
Serious.
"What else?"
Sable hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then—
"I can feel them."
The clearing went still again.
"Feel who?" Kael asked.
She turned her head slightly.
Looking past us.
Toward the forest.
"Them," she said.
My stomach dropped.
Because I felt it too now.
Not clearly.
Not like she did.
But enough.
Movement.
More wolves.
Not just the ones already here.
More coming.
From every direction.
The Alpha nodded slowly.
"They’re responding to you."
"I didn’t call them", Sable said.
"No", he agreed. "But they heard you."
My jaw tightened.
"Heard what?"
The Alpha looked at me.
Then back at her.
"Your awakening."
A chill ran down my spine.
"This isn’t over," Caius muttered.
"No," Zander agreed quietly. "It’s just getting started."
Sable stood slowly.
This time—
No hesitation.
No weakness.
Just control.
The power around her didn’t flare.
Didn’t surge.
It simply... existed.
And that somehow made it worse.
Stronger.
More dangerous.
"What do they want?" she asked.
The Alpha didn’t hesitate.
"You."
Kael groaned softly.
"Of course they do."
"But not just to claim," the Alpha added.
My eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"They want to see."
"See what?" I demanded.
"If you’re worthy."
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
My wolf stirred again.
Not in submission this time.
In challenge.
"Worthy of what?" I asked.
The Alpha’s gaze didn’t leave Sable.
"Of leading them."
My chest tightened.
"No."
The word came out sharper than I intended.
"This isn’t a test."
"It always was," he replied calmly.
Caius stepped forward slightly.
"She’s not playing your game."
The Alpha’s expression didn’t change.
"It’s not my game."
"Then whose is it?" Kael asked.
The answer came—
Not from him.
But from behind us.
A voice.
Deep.
Ancient.
Familiar.
"Theirs."
We all turned.
The dragon.
The First Guardian.
It stood at the edge of the clearing, its massive form towering over everything, its silver eyes glowing brighter than before.
"They will decide," it continued.
Sable’s gaze locked onto it.
"And if they decide I’m not worthy?"
The dragon didn’t hesitate.
"Then you will fall."
My body tensed instantly.
"That’s not happening."
The dragon’s gaze flicked to me.
Cold.
Unmoved.
"It is not your decision."
My fists clenched.
"Then it’s hers."
Sable didn’t look at me.
Didn’t look at anyone.
She stepped forward.
Past me.
Past all of us.
Toward the clearing.
Toward the wolves.
And for the first time—
I didn’t stop her.
Because something in the way she moved—
Told me I couldn’t.
The wolves parted instantly.
Creating a path.
Not forced.
Not commanded.
Given.
She walked forward slowly.
Calmly.
Like she wasn’t walking into a crowd of predators ready to tear her apart.
Like she belonged there.
My chest tightened.
"Be careful," I said quietly.
She didn’t look back.
"I’m not afraid anymore."
The words hit harder than anything else.
Because I believed her.
The Alpha stepped aside as she approached.
Respectful.
Silent.
Watching.
Waiting.
Sable stopped in the center of the clearing.
Surrounded.
Exposed.
Alone.
And yet—
She didn’t look small.
She didn’t look fragile.
She looked.....
Untouchable.
The wind picked up slightly, brushing through her hair as the energy around her shifted again.
Not violently.
Not uncontrollably.
Just enough to be felt.
She looked around slowly.
At all of them.
At every wolf watching her.
Then—
She spoke.
"I’m not here to prove anything to you."
The words carried.
Clear.
Sharp.
True.
Murmurs rippled through the wolves.
Confusion.
Disapproval.
Interest.
But she didn’t stop.
"I didn’t ask for this," she continued. "I didn’t choose it."
Her gaze hardened slightly.
"But I’m not running from it either."
Silence fell again.
Complete.
And then—
She took another step forward.
"And I’m not choosing one of you."
The reaction was instant.
Growls.
Tension.
Movement.
The air thickened dangerously.
The Alpha’s expression darkened slightly.
"That’s not how this works."
Sable didn’t flinch.
"Then change it."
The words hit like a shockwave.
Even I felt it.
The boldness.
The defiance
The power behind it.
The dragon’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Watching.
Judging.
The wolves shifted again.
Uneasy now.
Uncertain.
Because she wasn’t following the rules.
She was breaking them.
And no one knew what happened next.
The Alpha took a step forward.
Slow.
Careful.
"You don’t understand the consequences."
Sable’s gaze locked onto his.
"Then explain them."
A pause.
Then—
"You will start a war."
Silence.
Heavy.
Final.
My chest tightened.
Because deep down—
I knew he wasn’t wrong.
Sable didn’t look away.
Didn’t hesitate.
Didn’t falter.
"Then maybe it’s time something changed."
The wind howled through the clearing.
The wolves tensed
The dragon watched.
And in that moment—
I realized something terrifying.
She wasn’t just accepting what she was.
She was rewriting it.
And the world–
Was about to push back.
