The Darkness
The auditorium buzzed with shock and confusion as the students and faculty around the room had started whispering. Some pulling out their phones and others making frantic calls to the police. Social media was flooded with live streams, as others rushed toward the exits.
The majority of visitors wanted to void the fallout of what was unfolding. The joyous celebration of graduation had quickly turned into chaos. A scandal of this size was sure to make the headlines.
Jasmine stood frozen for a moment as Clara's photo flashed across the screen. She knew it was only a matter of time before Clara would lash out, and she was ready. The plan had been carefully executed and the stage set perfectly for this moment.
The dean yelled out, “Turn this off. Someone unplug the screen!”
The campus security was confused, but they did as the dean ordered. They scurried around trying to find out how to unplug it, but Maya had planned for that. The outlet was in the ceiling, and they needed a lift to reach it.
There was no way to turn off the constant revolving images of corruption. It included all members of the founding families. The crowd filmed as the video paused on photos of each person implicated.
“Get out of here! Turn those phones off! Security, collect those phones!”, the dean was trying to save himself.
Elijah’s men had trapped the founding families on the stage. The members seated in the crowd ran for their life. All hell broke loose.
The plan had gone well…
But no one could have predicted the level of sheer madness that would follow.
The noise in the room grew louder. Voices raised in outrage, fear, and disbelief echoed all around. It was a spectacle. A confirmation of everything Jasmine had been working toward. The best payback she could have taken to avenge her brother’s tormenter.
Elijah’s men had been scanning the crowd. Jasmine had disappeared in the commotion. He knew that if Clara was going to act, it would be now.
He forgot all about his pain as the need to protect her was his only desire. He had to make sure she wasn’t caught in the chaos, but he couldn’t see her. Panic clawed at his chest. The crowd was thick, and the event had turned into pandemonium in mere seconds.
Jasmine, however, had already anticipated this moment. She was prepared, calm, and collected in the face of Clara’s rage. Ready to defend herself and her family.
And just like clockwork, Clara made her move.
As Clara’s piercing voice cut through the chaos, she charged toward Jasmine.
“You think you’ve won?”, Clara screamed, her eyes wide with fury.
Clara stalked toward Jasmine, “You’re nothing! Do you think the world will see you as the hero for exposing me? This isn’t over. I will destroy you! My family owns the police force.”
Jasmine didn’t flinch.
She knew Clara well enough to understand the depths of her madness. The woman was dangerous, but Jasmine knew it meant she would make a mistake. It was a waiting game.
Without warning, Clara lunged at her. Her hands grabbed Jasmine’s throat, trying to choke the air out of her lungs. The crowd gasped in shock, but no one moved. No one wanted to help.
Everyone was either frozen with fear or too absorbed in their phones to help. Jasmine's vision began to narrow, her chest tightening with the lack of air, but she fought back with every ounce of strength she had.
Using her legs, she kicked Clara away. Forcing her to stumble backward. It was enough to create some space between them, but Clara quickly recovered. Her face twisted in anger.
Jasmine’s pulse raced, but her mind was clear. She didn’t make a move. Her plan was to use the university’s security system to prove self-defense. Everything Clara was yelling, was being added to the list of evidence.
Clara charged once more, but this time Jasmine anticipated her strike. Jasmine struck with force, a single push that sent Clara crashing to the floor. The impact was enough to daze Clara, but she wasn’t out for long. Her head was spinning, and her vision was blurred.
She scrambled to her feet, eyes blazing, and screeched, “You think this is over?”
Jasmine ignored the taunts.
She moved swiftly. She grabbed Clara by the wrist and drug her toward the stage. Clara kicked and screamed. Her efforts futile as Jasmine’s grip tightened. She pulled Clara with all her strength, not bothering to care about the shouts or curses from Clara’s entourage.
The stage was within reach, and Jasmine had already anticipated this moment. As they reached the stage, she didn’t hesitate. She cuffed Clara to the metal structure with practiced ease.
Clara’s face twisted in horror as the cuffs clicked shut, securing her to the stage like a trapped animal.
“You’ll regret this!”, Clara hissed. Her body jerking violently against the restraints, “You think this is over? I will ruin you!”
Jasmine stood tall, her breathing heavy but controlled.
“It’s over, Clara.”, she said. Her voice cold and resolute, “I am done with you.”
But Jasmine knew this wasn’t the end. Clara’s family and the rest of their network would try to escape. Flee the country. They would do anything to avoid facing the consequences. Jasmine couldn’t let that happen, so she had Maya working the last few weeks to drain their bank accounts and donate it to children’s charities.
Jasmine glanced around the room, ensuring everything was going according to plan. She had been the mastermind behind it all. She had seen this moment coming and prepared for it.
The plan had worked flawlessly, from the setup to the execution. She’d taken down one of the most powerful families in the city, all while keeping her cool under unimaginable pressure. She’d outsmarted them all, and in doing so, had shown everyone just how much strength she had.
The police sirens wailed in the distance, signaling the arrival of law enforcement. Elijah’s eyes never left Jasmine as he took a few steps forward. The chief of police was making his way toward the stage, his face a mixture of confusion and anger.
Elijah’s gut tightened. He knew the chief’s pockets ran deep and he had been complicit in the crimes for far too long. He aided in the corruption and Elijah wasn’t about to let this man walk free.
The chief charged toward Jasmine, undoubtedly going to sweep things under the rug. Without a second thought, Elijah approached the chief. His expression hardened as he grabbed the man by the collar.
“You’re done.”, Elijah growled. His voice low with rage, “Stay away from my woman. You won’t get to walk away from this.”
The chief opened his mouth, but no words came. Before he could even react, Elijah’s fist collided with his jaw. The force sent him sprawling to the floor.
The chief groaned, as his face contorted in pain.
“Elijah!”, one of the officers called out, but Elijah wasn’t listening.
He stood over the chief. His chest heaving with anger.
“Arrest him.”, Elijah barked, “He’s just as guilty as the rest of them.”
The officers hesitated for a moment, but then they realized that Elijah was right. The chief was just another cog in the machine. Now that the truth had come to light, they had no choice but to take him into custody.
As the police began to round up the rest of the criminals, Elijah turned his attention back to Jasmine. She stood there, watching the events unfold. Her body tense with exhaustion.
Elijah’s heart swelled with admiration and love as he made his way toward her.
Elijah’s gaze never left her. His eyes softened as they locked onto hers, a quiet admiration filling his gaze. The way she had handled everything, how she had led with such unwavering confidence… it was more than he could have ever imagined. He had always known Jasmine was incredible, but seeing her in action and orchestrating it all… made him fall deeper in love with her.
“Are you okay?”, he asked.
Jasmine looked up at him, a small but proud smile on her face.
“I’m fine.”, she said. Her voice steady despite the chaos that had just unfolded, “It’s over. We did it.”
Elijah pulled her into a tight embrace, holding her close. He could feel the tension in her body. The exhaustion that had settled in, but beneath it all was the pride of victory. She had outsmarted them all, had exposed their corruption.
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other’s arms, watching as the police continued to work. The criminals who had wreaked havoc on their lives were being led away in handcuffs, their power stripped from them.
And in that moment, everything felt right. Clara’s reign of terror was over, and the city was finally free from her grip. Jasmine had not only saved herself and Elijah, but she had also brought justice to countless others who had been affected by Clara’s crimes.
Elijah pulled back slightly.
“I’m so proud of you.”, he whispered. His voice thick with emotion, “You’re incredible.”
Jasmine’s smile widened, but there was something more in her eyes. A quiet strength that came from within.
“We did this together.”, she said softly, “This was our fight.”
“You’re amazing. You did this.”, Elijah whispered. His voice thick with emotion. His eyes held nothing but admiration, pride, and love.
Jasmine smiled faintly, the exhaustion beginning to take hold of her.
“I love you.”, she said softly. Her voice steady but worn. The bruises on her skin and the dirt on her clothes were evidence of the battle she’d just fought. But none of it mattered.
She had won. And with that victory, everything had changed.
Elijah pulled her tightly back into his arms, his embrace strong and comforting.
“I love you too.”, he replied.
He could feel the weight of the day pressing down on her, but it was a weight she had carried willingly. Knowing it would bring them all to this moment. She had planned every step, had known what needed to be done, and had executed it perfectly.
As they stood there, surrounded by the remnants of the chaos, Jasmine couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace. Clara’s empire had crumbled, and the people who had suffered because of her were finally going to see justice. The power Clara had over her once was now nothing more than a shadow of the past.
They watched in silence as the last of the criminals were escorted away, their hands cuffed, and their faces filled with defeat. Jasmine and Elijah stood together, their arms around each other, both feeling the weight of the moment settle into their bones.
It was finally over. The darkness had been lifted, and they had made it through the storm. Jasmine looked up at Elijah, her heart full of love and gratitude. In that moment, she knew that whatever happened next… they would face it together.
