Chapter 65

Chapter 65

Briar came back after just a short chat, her face flushed with anger, stomping heavily with every step.

She seemed to be venting her emotions.

"What happened? Didn't I ask you to have a chat with Willie? Why are you so angry?"

Briar snorted coldly, glaring in Willie's direction.

"That Willie is just impossible! I was asking him questions, and he didn't take me seriously at all. Not only did he refuse to answer my questions properly, but he just ignored me and brushed me aside!"

"Ms. Taylor, maybe we should switch to a different work crew. If the foreman is like this, how good can the workers under him be? This is a very important project that's about to be submitted. We can't have any mistakes at this critical moment!"

Briar's concerns weren't unreasonable.

If the foreman wasn't putting in effort, how dedicated could the workers under him be?

But work had already started, and ground had been broken. It was too late to switch to another crew, and finding a new one would be troublesome, too.

Since there were already people working here, they might as well let them continue and see how things went before making a decision.

Isabella grabbed Briar's wrist and pulled her to a shady spot out of the sun.

"Don't worry yet. Maybe it's just the foreman who's not performing well, but the workers under him are good?"

"Finding a new crew now would be very troublesome, and work has already started. Getting another crew would mean halting progress, which isn't worth it. Let's just see how things go."

Although Briar was somewhat unwilling, she knew that, given the current situation, this was the only option. She frowned as Willie's loud laughter reached her ears, making her even more dissatisfied.

"I was indeed careless about this. I should have found a more reliable work crew."

Briar let out a long sigh. Her bitter expression made Isabella couldn't help but smile. Isabella took the planning diagram from her hand.

"It's okay, don't think like that. Let's take it one step at a time. What if the workers under him are actually good? Besides, switching crews now really isn't feasible. Just use them for now and see."

Isabella stood up and walked toward several workers who were working.

Whether it was because Isabella was approaching or not, they were working hard, with all their attention on the dirt and bricks in front of them, working so hard they were out of breath.

The entire construction site's work progress was orderly, except for Willie in the distance.

He sure knew how to enjoy himself, deliberately finding a shady spot out of the sun, squatting there smoking.

He was looking around idly when he suddenly noticed Isabella standing not far away. When he got a clear look at Isabella's face, a flash of amazement crossed his eyes, and he even forgot to smoke the cigarette in his hand.

The man beside Willie noticed this and followed his gaze, curling his lip with a warning tone.

"Put away those little thoughts of yours! That's Isabella from the Taylor family. This woman is formidable. And stop standing around doing nothing here. You'd better do some work, or she might replace you."

Willie withdrew his gaze. He seemed a bit parched from staring, swallowed, and a sleazy smile appeared on his face.

"She's just a woman, what can she do? She just got a project and is showing off a bit. We'll do what we need to do. No need to pay too much attention."

The man beside him showed a flash of contempt in his eyes. When Isabella's gaze swept over again, he was the first to stand up, pick up a brick nearby, and get to work with his head down.

Just because Willie didn't understand Isabella didn't mean he didn't. Isabella's personality was straightforward—she meant what she said and got things done efficiently.

If there was anything that didn't satisfy her, she wouldn't tolerate it. Willie dared to mess with her casually, but he didn't dare to.

Afraid of losing this job, the man buried his head and worked hard, breaking into a sweat in no time.

Willie remained leisurely sitting in the open space, smoking puff by puff, quite content.

Dust was rising everywhere on the construction site, filled with the sounds of stacking bricks and moving building materials. His leisure was completely out of place with the people working hard around him.

Isabella frowned slightly, her patience reaching its limit. She wasn't someone who indulged others endlessly.

Her intention was not to scold the foreman in front of everyone on the first day of work, to give him some face, but he seemed unable to read her intentions.

He continued sitting there leisurely, as if he were on vacation.

Even when Isabella walked right up to him, Willie remained motionless. He took a drag of his cigarette, looked Isabella up and down with unfriendly eyes, then grinned.

"Hello? What's up? Is there a problem?"

Briar was furious on the side.

"Is there a problem? As the foreman, shouldn't you set an example? Shouldn't you stand up and work? What are you doing sitting here? Did I hire you to come here on vacation?"

Briar always spoke bluntly and sharply, never considering others' feelings.

Willie's expression changed. He threw down his cigarette and stood up.

"What? I'm going to sit here. These are all my people. If I tell them to go east, they won't dare go west. You believe it or not, we can stop working right now!"

As if to prove his words had credibility, Willie clapped his hands to attract the attention of the workers who were busy working.

He raised his voice, sounding sharp and grating.

"Everyone, put down what you're doing and listen to me!"

"We came here to work for others, yes, but that doesn't mean we have to be their servants. Now someone is looking down on us workers and deliberately making things difficult for me. If I say we're not doing this anymore, will you follow me and leave!"

He deliberately raised his volume, turning Briar's questioning of him alone into dissatisfaction with all the workers, stirring up emotions among the working crew with his words.

He glanced at Isabella with sinister eyes and smugly curved his lips.

Those workers immediately put down their work and stood in place, watching Isabella and Briar with wary eyes.

Although they didn't speak or voice agreement, their actions already showed their position.

Briar was so angry that her eyes widened. Just as she was about to retort, Isabella interrupted her.

Isabella stepped forward, her cool eyes carrying some pressure.

Even though she hadn't spoken yet, she slowly suppressed the somewhat chaotic scene.

The workers who had just put down their work saw her expression and quietly picked up the bricks in their hands, as if to continue working.

"I have never looked down on you. You do your work, and if you do it well, I naturally won't be stingy or deliberately cause you trouble or make things difficult for you."

"But the premise is that you are actually working properly."
