THE WOMAN'S CONFESSION

The next day, Rory and Victor visited the hotel where they had lodged Alice and her twin boys. Despite the fact that she had come to them with the intent of destroying their family, Rory still made sure they were comfortable because of the kids.

She knocked twice and the door to their hotel room was opened. The room was dimly lit and the boys were sleeping soundly.

Rory sat stiffly on the couch, her fingers digging into her lap as she watched the woman tremble in the chair across from her.

Alice’s eyes darted from Rory to Victor, her lips quivering as if she wanted to bolt but knew she couldn’t. Not now, especially not when she had been caught in the web of her own lies.

Victor leaned against the door; his arms were crossed, and his face was carved in stone. His usual gentle and patient demeanour was gone. His mercy was non-existent too at this moment. This woman had cost him the peaceful atmosphere he enjoyed with his lovely wife and child for years, in just a day. He was not going to forgive her, he must get the truth out of her and will make whoever is behind this pay.

“Are you going to tell us who sent you, or do you want me to strangle you here?” he asked coldly.

Alice swallowed hard. “I—I told you, I don’t know his name.”

Victor’s jaw clenched. “Then start from the beginning, tell us everything and describe him.”

Alice’s gaze fell on Rory, then back to Victor. Her breath came out in quick, shallow bursts. “It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”

Rory scoffed, her voice was laced with fury. “You tried to steal my husband and destroy my family, and you think that makes a difference?”

Sasha flinched. “I was desperate.”

Victor took a slow step forward, his eyes burning with a dangerous edge. “Then I suggest you start explaining before I lose what little patience I have left.”

Tears welled in Alice’s eyes. She looked nothing like the confident, manipulative woman she had been weeks ago. Now, she was just broken.

“I did not plan for this to happen,” she whispered. “I swear I was just drowning in debt; I had no money, no home and no way to survive. My landlord had kicked me out of the house because I couldn't afford rent, and it was against the hotel's policy to stay within the premises when you were not on duty. The biggest ordeal was that I was two weeks pregnant. Then one day, I got a message from an unknown number.”

Victor narrowed his eyes. “Who sent it?”

“I don’t know!” she cried. “I never saw his face. He just contacted me and told me exactly what to do. I was scared at first because I didn't tell anyone that I was pregnant. He sent me your picture and paid me a huge amount of money. It was more than I needed.”

Rory’s stomach twisted. “Why? Why would someone go through all this trouble?”

Alice hesitated. Then, in a voice so soft it was almost a whisper, she said, “Because they wanted to destroy you.”

Rory stiffened.

Victor’s entire body went rigid. “Me?”

Sasha nodded frantically. “Yes, they probably knew about your achievements and got jealous. The plan was to ruin your career on social media after I gave birth. But after some time, I didn't hear from him again and there was no way to contact him. Until last month, my babies were 7 years old, the money they paid me had run out, and I was worried; just then, I got a call from another unknown number; I recognised the voice. It was the same man, he said he had another task for me. He sent me a DNA report document and your address, and he paid me another huge sum with instructions on what to do.”

Rory looked at her, she seemed sincere this time. Curiously she asked. “Why would anyone go through so much trouble?”

“They wanted you broken.” She replied, “You were the target this time. They wanted you to think your husband had betrayed you. So that you can leave him. The plan was to destroy the trust between you both.”

Rory’s breath hitched.

Victor clenched his fists. “Who the hell are they?”

Alice shook her head. “I don’t know! I swear, I don’t. I was being watched the whole time. Every time I tried to ask questions, I got a warning. If I stepped out of line, I would have disappeared.”

Victor’s veins pulsed with fury. This wasn’t some random woman trying to trap him.

This was a hit.

A calculated, cold-blooded attack.

Rory’s voice was hoarse. “You mean they were watching you? Every move you made?”

Alice nodded, her hands gripping the hem of her dress like it was the only thing keeping her together. “They knew everything, where I went, who I talked to. They even sent someone to ‘check’ on me, to make sure I wasn’t going to back out. Even until this moment, they are watching.”

Victor’s rage was ice-cold. Someone had orchestrated this entire mess with precision.

But who? And why?

His voice was low, lethal. “Do you have anything that can lead us to them?”

Alice hesitated.

Then, slowly, she reached into her purse and pulled out a phone.

“I saved some of the messages,” she whispered.

Victor took the phone and scrolled through the texts. The number was unknown and the messages were chilling.

“Stick to the plan.”

“You are being watched.”

“Make him believe it and make sure she leaves.”

Rory shuddered. The messages weren’t just instructions.

They were a threat.

Victor’s grip tightened on the phone. “This isn’t over.”

Rory met his gaze, her heart pounding. Someone had gone to extreme lengths to rip them apart.

But they had failed.

And now, that person is going to pay. Before they left, they assigned more guards to watch over her to make sure that she was safe. Then, the couple drove back home, relieved that they had found out the truth that almost cost their union, but still worried about who could have sent Alice to destroy them.

Whoever it is, still lurks out there. This means that they are not entirely safe, and Alice and her boys are not safe as well.

Victor held her hands, sensing her thoughts. “We will find him.” He said reassuringly.
