A Promise for the Future
The vineyard was coming to life.
Each day, the land transformed beneath their hands, rows of freshly planted vines stretching across the rich soil, marking the beginning of something new. The work was grueling, but neither Ethan nor Lila complained. This wasn’t just labor—it was theirs.
Lila had never imagined a life like this, one where she could wake up every morning with a purpose that wasn’t tied to someone else’s expectations. For so long, she had simply survived. Now, she was living.
And with Ethan by her side, it felt even more real.
It was late in the afternoon when Ethan finally stopped working, brushing the sweat from his brow as he walked toward the porch where Lila sat with Lyra in her lap.
“You’re pacing again,” Lila teased as he climbed the steps.
Ethan exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “I’m thinking.”
Lila smirked. “That’s dangerous.”
Ethan chuckled, sitting beside her. “I wanted to talk to you about something.”
Lila arched a brow. “Oh?”
Ethan turned slightly, his fingers brushing against Lyra’s tiny hand as she gurgled in her sleep. “This vineyard… our home… I want to make sure it lasts.”
Lila studied him. “It will last.”
Ethan exhaled. “I mean officially.”
Lila frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
Ethan reached into his pocket, pulling out a folded piece of paper. He handed it to her, watching carefully as she opened it.
Lila’s eyes scanned the document, her breath catching as she realized what it was.
A legal deed.
In both of their names.
Ethan cleared his throat. “I had it drawn up this morning.”
Lila looked up at him, heart pounding. “Ethan…”
“I want you to have equal ownership,” he said firmly. “This isn’t just my dream, Lila. It’s ours.”
Lila swallowed hard, emotion tightening her throat.
She had never been given anything before—everything in her life had been fought for, earned through sweat and sacrifice. And now, Ethan was giving her something priceless. Not just land, not just a home, but a future.
“Are you sure?” she whispered.
Ethan cupped her face, his thumb tracing her cheek. “I’ve never been more sure of anything.”
Lila let out a shaky breath, then smiled. “Then I accept.”
Ethan exhaled in relief, leaning in to press a slow, lingering kiss to her lips.
Lyra stirred between them, letting out a soft whimper, and they both chuckled.
Ethan kissed the top of her head. “Now, let’s build something worth passing down.”
Lila nodded, resting her forehead against his. “Together.”
And with that, their future was set in stone.
The next few days were filled with preparation. Ethan had already started hiring extra hands for the vineyard, men from town who were willing to work for fair wages and a chance to be part of something new.
Lila spent her days tending to Lyra, making sure their home remained a place of warmth amid the growing chaos of farm life.
Margaret, of course, took charge of overseeing everything with her usual sharp eye.
“Honestly,” she muttered as she stirred a pot of stew in their kitchen. “You two have taken on a project far bigger than you realize.”
Lila smirked. “Are you saying we’re in over our heads?”
Margaret huffed. “Oh, I know you are.”
Ethan, who had just walked in, smirked. “I feel like that was meant to be an insult.”
Margaret turned to him, hands on her hips. “It was.”
Ethan chuckled, stealing a slice of bread from the table. “Fair enough.”
Margaret rolled her eyes. “Stubborn fool.”
Lila smiled, watching the exchange.
There was something about the way they had formed this strange little family that warmed her heart.
Margaret would never admit it, but she cared.
And Lila would always be grateful for her presence.
That evening, after the day’s work was done, Lila and Ethan stood at the edge of their land, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Ethan wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close.
“You still believe in this?” he asked softly.
Lila turned to him, her expression unwavering. “I never stopped believing in it.”
Ethan exhaled, brushing a kiss against her temple.
“You know,” he murmured, “I used to think happiness was something I’d never find.”
Lila glanced up at him, her brows furrowing.
Ethan gave her a small smile. “I spent so many years trapped in a life I didn’t want. But now, with you, with Lyra… I finally feel free.”
Lila swallowed hard, emotion tightening her throat.
“You are free,” she whispered.
Ethan turned to face her fully, his hands framing her face.
“And I’m never letting go of that.”
Lila smiled, her heart full. “Good.”
Ethan leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss.
The vineyard, their home, their family—
It was all coming together.
And nothing could take it away from them.
Because this wasn’t just Ethan’s future.
It was theirs.
And it was only just beginning.
