A New Beginning
The morning came quietly, the first rays of sunlight filtering through the curtains as Lila stirred in bed. She blinked sleepily, adjusting to the warmth of the blankets wrapped around her, the familiar scent of Ethan beside her.
For the first time in what felt like weeks, she had slept deeply.
Lyra had woken only once during the night, and Ethan had been the one to soothe her back to sleep, allowing Lila the rare gift of uninterrupted rest.
She turned her head slightly, smiling as she saw Ethan still asleep beside her, his dark hair tousled, his breathing slow and even.
It was rare to see him this relaxed.
Usually, he was up before dawn, already planning, strategizing, making sure the vineyard was progressing according to schedule. But this morning, he seemed content to rest, the exhaustion of the past few days finally catching up with him.
Lila reached out, brushing a gentle hand over his cheek.
Ethan stirred, his lips parting slightly as he exhaled. Slowly, his blue eyes fluttered open, meeting hers with a sleepy smile.
"Good morning," he murmured, his voice still rough with sleep.
Lila smiled. "Good morning."
Ethan reached up, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Did you sleep well?"
She nodded. "Better than I have in a long time."
Ethan smirked. "Good."
Lila shifted closer, resting her head against his chest. "You should sleep in more often."
Ethan chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist. "I don't think that's possible with everything happening."
Lila sighed. "I know. But you still need rest."
Ethan pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I’ll rest when we get this vineyard running."
Lila pulled back slightly, narrowing her eyes at him. "That sounds like something Margaret would yell at you for saying."
Ethan smirked. "Margaret yells at me for everything."
Lila laughed, shaking her head.
A soft sound from the bassinet caught their attention, and both of them turned toward it.
Lyra stirred, her tiny hands stretching as she let out a sleepy whimper.
Ethan sat up, already reaching for her before Lila could. He lifted their daughter into his arms with practiced ease, cradling her gently against his chest.
"Good morning, little one," he murmured, pressing a kiss to Lyra’s forehead.
Lila watched, her heart swelling at the sight.
Ethan had adapted to fatherhood so naturally, so completely.
She reached out, brushing a finger against Lyra’s cheek. "She looks so much like you."
Ethan chuckled. "Lucky girl."
Lila rolled her eyes but smiled. "And modest, too."
Ethan smirked. "She gets that from me as well."
Lila chuckled, shaking her head.
It was moments like this that made everything worth it.
The hard work, the uncertainty, the long hours—it was all for this.
Their family. Their future.
After breakfast, Ethan and Lila walked the vineyard together, Lyra wrapped snugly against Lila’s chest.
The workers were already busy, clearing more of the land, preparing the soil for planting. The scent of fresh earth lingered in the air, mixed with the crispness of the morning breeze.
Ethan stopped near the edge of the field, looking out over the land.
"It’s really happening," he murmured.
Lila reached for his hand, intertwining their fingers. "It is."
Ethan exhaled. "I spent so much of my life being told what my future was supposed to be. I never imagined it would be this."
Lila smiled. "Do you regret it?"
Ethan turned to her, his expression soft. "Not for a second."
Lila squeezed his hand. "Good."
They stood in silence for a moment, watching as the workers moved through the fields, the hum of conversation and the rhythm of work filling the air.
Then, Ethan turned to her, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"Do you want to help?"
Lila raised an eyebrow. "Help with what?"
Ethan gestured toward a row of tools. "Planting."
Lila scoffed. "Ethan, I barely know how to keep a flower alive."
Ethan chuckled. "Then it’s a good thing I do."
Lila gave him a look. "Are you seriously asking me to help dig holes in the dirt?"
Ethan smirked. "Yes."
Lila sighed dramatically. "Fine. But if I ruin something, it’s your fault."
Ethan grinned. "Deal."
Lila handed Lyra off to Margaret, who had arrived just in time to witness the exchange.
Margaret smirked. "This should be interesting."
Lila rolled her eyes but smiled.
Ethan led her to one of the plots, handing her a small spade.
"Alright," he said, kneeling beside her. "You just dig a little hole here, place the root in, and cover it gently."
Lila watched as he demonstrated, his movements fluid and confident.
She sighed. "You make it look easy."
Ethan smirked. "It is easy."
Lila narrowed her eyes. "I don’t trust you."
Ethan chuckled. "Come on, give it a try."
Lila hesitated, then knelt beside him, mimicking his movements. She dug into the dirt, creating a small hole before glancing at Ethan for confirmation.
He nodded. "Perfect."
Lila smirked. "See? I can do this."
Ethan chuckled. "Told you."
She placed the root into the hole, then carefully covered it with soil, patting it down gently.
Ethan watched her, a warm smile on his face. "You’re a natural."
Lila laughed. "I planted one root, Ethan. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves."
Ethan leaned in, brushing his lips against hers. "I’m still impressed."
Lila rolled her eyes but kissed him back.
The vineyard was coming to life, little by little.
And for the first time, she could see it.
The rows of vines stretching across the fields, the scent of fresh grapes in the air, the land thriving under their care.
It was real.
It was theirs.
And it was just the beginning.
