Chapter 191 The Child Looks Like the Father
Jennifer's face twisted with a mix of emotions. Anger bubbled up inside her.
She couldn't believe she was face-to-face with Gabriella again after all this time. What really got under Jennifer's skin was Gabriella's earlier attitude.
Gabriella must've recognized her right away; otherwise, she wouldn't have said those weird things.
And what was the result?
Gabriella's status had changed. The first thing she did upon returning was to make her presence known in this city.
Seeing Jennifer's face grow colder, Ophelia knew her efforts weren't in vain.
She wanted them to argue, to fight until one of them was utterly defeated.
She hoped Gabriella would give up completely and leave, never to come back again.
Only then could her hard-won marriage be truly secure.
Meanwhile, Jennifer was beyond frustrated.
"Alright, you dare to change your appearance and mess with my feelings? Just wait, I'll deal with you!" she muttered.
Jennifer quickly hatched a plan in her mind.
Meanwhile, in the parking lot, Alfred's strong hand gripped Gabriella's arm so tightly.
Gabriella struggled desperately, but she couldn't do anything against Alfred.
She had no choice but to walk with him, all the while complaining. "What are you doing? You forced me to this event out of nowhere and let your people bully me—was it on purpose?"
Alfred's voice was calm as he looked at Gabriella's anxious face.
But his gaze carried a chill.
He had seen everything at the party. Why did Gabriella look at Samuel like that?
It was as if she had seen the last person she wanted to see in the world.
And now, Gabriella was pretending to be strong.
The more she acted like this, the more likely she was to be hiding a deep wound.
And it was probably a long-standing one.
What had Gabriella gone through in the past few years? Why couldn't he see through her or guess correctly?
Seeing she couldn't win against Alfred, Gabriella changed tactics. "Mr. Barnett, since you've dragged me to the parking lot, I assume you're letting me leave, right?"
She continued, "Mr. Barnett, you don't seem to enjoy this event either. Why not be a good guy and take me home?"
Seeing Alfred still standing there, Gabriella crossed her arms. "You want to escort me back? I've already been scolded inside. If Mr. Barnett doesn't show any gesture, how do I know if I'll be met with kindness or a slap when I go back?"
Alfred's earlier gentleness vanished as he looked at Gabriella.
Sometimes, he shouldn't be too kind to his first love.
Otherwise, when the first love starts to change, his own mood would be affected.
Like Gabriella now, seriously asking for benefits—something she would never have done before.
Alfred didn't stop Gabriella anymore. "Fine, if you want to leave, pack your things and go. But as for a private car... don't even think about it."
Only those with wealth or skills could enjoy such treatment.
Now, all resources were in Alfred's hands.
Once she left, the nearest bus stop was quite a walk away.
Thinking about it, Gabriella's mood soured even more. 'This guy is still as overbearing as ever. Dragging me around all day for no reason, and I didn't even get to eat properly.'
But the thought of her newfound freedom and being able to eat whatever she wanted at home cheered her up. She walked down the road, leaving all the day's unpleasantness behind.
That night, the front pages of all the newspapers were the same.
They were all celebrating Ophelia and Justin.
The praise was repeated so many times it gave people a headache.
Gabriella had no interest in this and handed the freshly delivered newspaper to Charles.
The little boy didn't understand the colorful pages and quickly tore them into pieces.
Gabriella found it adorable and took a few photos.
But she didn't forget her real work and couldn't stay with Charles for too long.
She handed him over to Ariana. "Ariana, thanks for helping out today."
Ariana didn't mind. But her gaze at Gabriella was a bit complicated.
It felt like a heavy stone was pressing on her heart, and it took a while before she could ask. "Miss Montague, don't take this the wrong way. I'm just curious—who was that man we met on the road the other day?"
Alfred had been quite domineering that day, giving Gabriella no chance to refuse and dragging her away.
Even Charles had to be taken back by Ariana.
While it was not uncommon for wealthy people to have special relationships or quirks, seeing it firsthand was different.
Gabriella thought for a moment, unsure how to describe Alfred.
Should she call him her first love, or a heartless man who only knew how to hurt her pure feelings?
Gabriella couldn't find the right words and soon showed a bitter smile, looking at Ariana. "Ariana, what do you think our relationship is?"
Ariana thought for a moment, then looked seriously at Gabriella. "If I'm not mistaken, he should be Charles's father, right?"
Gabriella was startled by this. Looking at Ariana again, her gaze changed. "How did you know?"
Ariana, seeing she was right, laughed. "In my line of work, I meet all kinds—couples fighting, divorces, single parents raising kids alone, nothing surprises us anymore. But here's the kicker: I clocked your expression. When you looked at him, there was something raw in your eyes. If that's not unresolved feelings, what is it?"
She spoke seriously, then turned to look at Charles. "Miss Montague, you should take a closer look. Charles looks a lot like that gentleman."
Hearing this, Gabriella studied Charles's face.
A one-year-old still had a bit of baby fat, and his features weren't fully developed, even his nose seemed a bit flat.
But there was a certain handsomeness in his brows.
Especially those deep, bright eyes.
Every time she saw them, Gabriella couldn't help but think of Alfred.
She had thought it was because Alfred, as Charles's father, had let her down.
But now, it seemed... it was because Charles really did look like Alfred.
