Chapter 161 When the Hunted Became the Alpha
Chapter 161 When the Hunted Became the Alpha
“I heard about Durok Biotech,” she said, panic clear in her voice. “How did you miss those companies? Barrister Marcel said they were not on the casino list. They were not sold by the casino. We cannot even blame the casino under the contract. Drake, I think someone trapped you.”
“Don’t worry about that. ” Drake replied, rubbing his temples. “Focus on your work. I cannot visit the set as planned.”
Due to the pact they had made two months earlier, Cassandra wanted Drake to treat her as before.
“Drake,” Cassandra said carefully, “I heard something else. Elena has become part of the Farrington. She has been declared the executive vice president of Farrington Corporation.”
“What are you trying to say,” Drake asked, his voice turning cold.
Morrin's warning still rang in his ears.
“I do not want you near Elena,” Cassandra said. “But if she can help you, maybe you should reach out. If that feels wrong, I will be having dinner with Damian tonight. He may help. That is all. What do you think about this?”
Cassandra's voice shook through the phone.
“I have not fallen so low that I need a woman to save me,” Drake snapped. His jaw locked, teeth grinding as anger and shame tangled inside him. “Take care of yourself.”
He ended the call without waiting for her reply.
Knowing Elena had already shut him out completely, Drake drove straight toward the Farrington Corporation building. He parked nearby and waited.
From inside his car, Drake watched Samson step out of the building. The man looked relaxed, even cheerful, as he climbed into his car and drove away. Donald pushed his door open, lit a cigarette, and stood beside his car. Smoke curled around him as his eyes stayed fixed on the towering building ahead. He said nothing.
Once, he had believed Elena would remain his mate forever.
Now the space between them felt wider than any territory line.
Drake's fingers shook as he raised the cigarette again. He loosened his tie.
His eyes burned. Tears gathered but did not fall.
From the underground garage, Melvin drove Elena’s car out. He spotted Drake's vehicle at once.
Elena was at the back seat, focused on the documents in her hands.
“Miss Elena,” Melvin said quietly, “Mr Drake parked over there.”
Elena lifted her head.
Drake seemed to notice the car and began walking toward it.
“Keep driving,” Elena said flatly, eyes dropping back to the papers. “Do not stop.”
Seeing the car move on, Drake rushed back to his own car and followed closely behind.
“He is following us,” Melvin said. “Should I shake him off?”
“No,” Elena replied. “Drive as usual. I do not want delays.”
She needed to finish reviewing the documents.
In truth, Elena already knew why Drake had come.
Now Drake had learned she was the brain behind Durok Biotech Company. Of course, he would come searching.
Elena turned her eyes toward the window.
Rain streaked across the glass, blurring the glowing city lights into long trails. She knew this confrontation could not be avoided forever. Her apartment is close to the Farrington Corporation building. Letting Drake continue following them would only cause more trouble.
“Melvin,” she said calmly, “pull over ahead.”
“Understood.”
Melvin guided the car into a service lane and parked. He stepped out, grabbed an umbrella, and opened the door, holding it above Elena’s head.
As Elena stepped onto the wet pavement, she saw Drake approaching, his clothes darkened by rain. She reached for the umbrella.
“Wait in the car,” she said.
“Okay, I will stay back,” Melvin replied firmly.
Elena glanced toward a café along the green walkway.
Five minutes later, Elena and Drake sat across from each other inside the cafés.
Drake stared at her, emotions churning wildly. His voice came out rough. “Congratulations on your new post at Farrington Corporation.”
“So you chased me just to say that,” Elena said, lifting her coffee. “I remember telling you to stay out of my life. This is annoying.”
Drake gripped his cup hard. “Are you the founder of Durok Biotech Company?”
Elena gave a short nod. “Yes. You came to beg on behalf of your fallen company, didn’t you?”
Hearing it from Elena’s lips cut deeper than any rumor.
Drake's eyes reddened. A strained smile formed. “Elena, you were always strong.
This shows that when we were together, I was the one holding you back.”
Elena sipped her coffee, gaze lowered. Her impatience showed clearly. “Say what you came to say.”
“If this is revenge, then after the Hamilton Corporation falls, I hope you stop hating me.”
He asked.
“Already ready for ruin,” Elena asked quietly. “You will not fight.”
“I once promised that whatever you wanted, I would try to give,” Drake said. His smile twisted with pain. “If my family’s fall is what you wish, I will not resist.”
“After all these years, you are still the same,” Elena said coldly. She stood, grabbing her bag.
“Elena,” Drake rose fast, tears filling his eyes. He wiped them away with shaking fingers. “Stay a moment longer.”
“My time matters,” she replied without turning.
Outside, rain soaked the ground. Drake chased after her.
As she reached her car, he stood in the rain and shouted.
“I regret it,” he cried, voice breaking. “You once asked if I would regret hurting you after my memory returned. I regret it. I regret it more than anything.”
His sobs echoed. “I regret it so deeply I wish I could go back and kill that version of myself.
Elena, I regret it with everything in me.”
Elena paused for a breath, then bent and entered the car.
“When my family’s company falls and your anger fades, can we start again? Can we begin anew?”
As Melvin closed the door, Drake's desperate cries faded behind them.
Elena watched rain slide down the window under the streetlights.
She thought Drake came to beg on behalf of his company. She had planned to crush his hope, just as he once crushed hers in that hotel when he destroyed her chance to seek justice for Jamil.
That would have tasted like true revenge.
But his surrender made everything feel empty.
