Chapter 122 The Ghost in the Network

Chapter 122 The Ghost in the Network
Alexander sat behind the heavy oak desk in his private study, the room illuminated only by the glow of multiple computer screens. The estate was quiet in the early morning hours, but his mind was anything but calm. The name Ben had given him during the interrogation burned in his thoughts like a brand. Kael Evans. A Moonthorn operative who had orchestrated the kidnapping of his mate. Alexander leaned forward and opened the encrypted file Marcus had sent him moments earlier.
A photograph filled the screen.
Kael Evans stared back at him from the image. Mid thirties. Sharp features. Dark hair cropped short. A faint scar running along his left jawline. The picture had been pulled from an old traffic camera near Ben’s apartment building from the day of the meeting. Alexander studied the man’s eyes. Cold. Calculating. This was not a low level foot soldier. This was someone who had been operating in the shadows for years.
He picked up his phone and dialed Marcus.
The assistant answered immediately. "Sir."
"Take the picture of Kael Evans," Alexander said. "Send it to our hacker. I want every CCTV camera within a five block radius of Ben’s apartment checked. Old footage of the day Ben met with him. Find the man. Then track his vehicle through traffic cams until you find where he lives. Do not stop until you have an address."
"Understood," Marcus replied. "I will pull in our best hacker. We should have something within the hour."
Alexander ended the call and leaned back in his chair. The study felt too quiet. The only sound was the low hum of the computers and the occasional tick of the grandfather clock in the corner. He drummed his fingers on the desk as he waited. Every minute that passed felt like a waste. Moonthorn and Ironthorn were still out there. Still plotting. Still searching for ways to reach Maddie in the Silver sanctuary. He could not allow them to get close again.
His phone buzzed with the first update from Marcus. A video clip from a CCTV camera two blocks from Ben’s apartment. Alexander opened it and watched as a man matching Kael Evans’ description exited a side street and entered the building. He carried a black duffel bag. The timestamp showed it was the day of the meeting.
"Track the car he left in," he typed. "Every traffic camera. Every intersection. Find where it went."
The response came quickly. "The car was seen heading north toward the industrial district. We are pulling more feeds now."
Alexander stood up and paced the length of the study. The industrial district was a perfect hiding place. Abandoned warehouses. Few cameras. Easy access to escape routes. Kael Evans was smart. But Alexander was smarter. He would find him. He would make him talk.
Another message from Marcus. "We have a hit. The car was abandoned in an underground parking garage. But we caught another vehicle picking up the driver. A black SUV. We are tracking it now through traffic cams."
Alexander’s pulse quickened. "Keep at it. Do not lose that SUV."
The chase continued for another hour. Marcus sent updates every few minutes. The SUV had taken back roads. Avoided main highways. But the hacker was relentless. He pulled feeds from private security cameras, gas stations and toll booths. Slowly the trail led them to a quiet residential area on the outskirts of the city. A modest house with a large garage. The SUV had pulled into the driveway thirty minutes earlier.
Alexander stared at the address on the screen. "Send a team. Quietly. I want eyes on that house. Do not engage until I give the order."
He walked to the window and looked out over the estate grounds. The sun was rising higher now casting long shadows across the lawns. Somewhere out there Kael Evans was hiding. Planning. Thinking he was safe. Alexander smiled coldly. He would prove him wrong.
His phone rang again. An unknown number. He answered immediately.
A woman’s voice came through the line, smooth, confident. Slightly amused. "Hello Alexander Blackwood. I have information that could help you dismantle Moonthorn and Ironthorn. But I want something in return."
Alexander’s grip on the phone tightened. "Who is this?"
"You can call me Lydia," she said. "I am a high-ranking operative within Moonthorn. I want out. I can give you the location of their main stronghold. The names of their leaders. The details of their plans. But I need protection. And I need it now."
Alexander’s mind raced. This could be the break they needed. Or it could be a trap. He chose his words carefully. "Prove you are who you say you are. Give me something useful first."
Lydia laughed softly. "Kael Evans is not the only one who has been feeding information, I know by now you might have discord about him. I know where they are keeping their supply caches. I know the names of their human collaborators. Meet me at the old docks at midnight. Come alone. If you bring anyone else the deal is off."
The line went dead.
Alexander stared at the phone. His wolf snarled with suspicion. This felt too convenient. Too easy. But if there was even a chance she was telling the truth he could not ignore it. He would go to the docks. He would listen. And he would be ready for whatever game she was playing.
The hunt for Kael Evans would continue. But now there was a new player on the board. Lydia. A high ranking Moonthorn operative offering to betray her own pack. Alexander did not trust her, not yet. But he would use her if it brought him closer to ending this war.
He called Marcus again. "Prepare a team. We have a meeting at the old docks at midnight. I want eyes on every exit, you guys will stay hidden and wait for my command."
The game had changed. And Alexander was ready to play it to the end.
