Chapter 9 Just an Omega
/Nelson/
Honestly, I’d told myself I was going to let my men escort her back. That was the plan. Keep things formal, simple, distant. But somehow, I ended up in the damn car instead waiting like some fool who couldn’t stay away.
The moment she stepped in, head bowed, voice soft and respectful, it took everything in me not to groan. What happened to the firecracker from last night? The one who kicked like she meant it? The one who talked back with eyes that glowed like gold fire?
This version meek, quiet, careful didn’t sit right. It felt wrong. Like she’d locked away the part of herself that made her… her.
Sunny huffed inside me. She’s nervous. Maybe she thinks we’ll punish her.
For what? Existing? I shot back, but even I couldn’t deny how fragile she looked sitting across from me, hands clasped on her lap, eyes fixed on the window.
I’d already mind-linked my Beta and Gemma, to prepare her room same floor as mine. It wasn’t exactly intentional… but also not an accident.
Jasmine, my Gemma’s mate, was already excited to meet her. She’d been the only woman living permanently in the Ranger Pack’s main house other than the occasional visiting Alphas daughters from other pack and she’d been begging for female company for months if not years...
“She’ll like having another woman around,” Gemma had said through the link, her voice amused. “But something tells me this one’s different.”
Different.
Yeah, that was one word for it.
The ride stretched quiet after a while. The road hummed beneath the tires, trees flickering past like ghosts. Every so often, I’d glance at her. She hadn’t said a word after asking her questions, but i really do feel like she hiding something big... How is it possible an omega could fight me like that...?
Her head rested lightly against the window, eyes half-closed. A few strands of hair had fallen across her face, soft and wild.
And then, slowly, she drifted off. Her breathing evened out, lashes fluttering once, twice, then still. Sunny went absolutely still inside me. She’s asleep.
Yeah, I murmured back, trying not to stare. She’s exhausted.
Then move her, Sunny said immediately. The window’s cold. She’ll wake up sore.
She’ll wake up anyway if I....
Just do it, Nelson.
I sighed under my breath, cursing my wolf’s tenderness, but leaned closer anyway.
Carefully, I slid a hand behind her head, fingers brushing her hair, and eased her away from the cold glass until her head rested lightly against my shoulder.
She didn’t stir.
Didn’t flinch.
Just breathed.
The scent of her hit me all over again faint honey and smoke, with something I couldn’t name. Something that didn’t belong to wolves at all.
Sunny exhaled, his voice softer now. She fits. Feels right. Like she was made to be ours... i really do hope when she gets her wolf that she's our mate.
I felt it too that strange, quiet pull in my chest, the one that made my heart beat just a little slower when she was close.
She’s not our mate, I reminded him. You said so yourself.
He hesitated, uneasy. I know what I said. But how come she feels like one? How come every time she’s near, everything else goes quiet?
I looked down at her face peaceful now, the sharp edges of defiance gone, replaced by something fragile I hadn’t noticed before.
Maybe it’s because she doesn’t have her wolf yet, I said quietly, more to myself than to him. Maybe that bond can’t form fully until she does.
Sunny growled softly, not convinced. Or maybe she does have her wolf, and she’s just hiding it.
I didn’t answer. Because deep down… part of me already knew he might be right.
Outside, the trees began to thin, the road widening into the first glimpse of my territory mountains in the distance, silver streams cutting through the dark woods, and the faint outline of the packhouse ahead.
And all I could think about was the sleeping girl on my shoulder the one who was supposed to be a simple omega, but already felt like something far more dangerous.
By the time the car rolled past the final ridge and into Ranger Pack territory, dawn had begun to break across the horizon soft gold streaking through the mist that clung to the trees.
The packhouse loomed into view, standing tall and sharp against the backdrop of the forest.
It wasn’t just big; it was built like a fortress stone walls reinforced with steel, windows wide enough to watch the entire valley below. The place radiated authority, dominance, and a sense of home that came with years of loyalty and blood.
Edlyn stirred beside me just as we pulled into the circular driveway. Her head shifted slightly against my shoulder before she blinked awake, eyes heavy with sleep.
For a moment, she looked disoriented confused about where she was and why she was so close to me. Then, realizing, she jerked upright, murmuring a quiet apology.
“It’s fine,” I said, my voice lower than I intended. “You were tired.”
She didn’t respond, only gave a small nod and turned her gaze toward the massive building ahead.
As we stepped out, a few of my warriors stood near the entrance alert, disciplined, and definitely curious. They weren’t used to seeing me arrive with anyone who wasn’t a ranked wolf or a council member.
And the fact that it was an omega?
Yeah, that caught their attention fast.
I could already hear the whispers in the link between the guards.
Who’s she?
Why is she with him?
Did the Supreme Alpha just bring home a female omega?
I shut the link with a single thought, my patience thin.
My Gemma Timi and his mate Jasmine appeared at the door as we approached.
Gemma, ever the composed one, dipped his head slightly. “Everything’s ready, Supreme Alpha. Her quarters are set up just as you instructed.”
Jasmine, on the other hand, had that bright, eager look in her eyes that made me both grateful and wary. She was already scanning Edlyn from head to toe, smiling like she’d just found a new sister.
“Oh, she’s adorable,” Jasmine said before I could stop her. “Come on, love, I’ll show you around. You must be starving.”
Edlyn hesitated, glancing at me as if waiting for permission.
Sunny purred in amusement. She’s looking to you now. Interesting.
“Go ahead,” I said with a nod. “Timi and Jasmine will take care of you.”
She bowed slightly again too respectful, too careful before following Jasmine toward the stairs.
But then, halfway there, she paused and turned slightly, her gaze flicking back to me. Just for a second, her eyes met mine gold glinting faintly then she turned back and some how i wish she keep looking at me like that.
I just stood there watching her disappear up the stairs, her cloak swaying softly behind her.
When the door to her room closed, Timi turned to me, arching a brow. “You sure about this one?”
I exhaled slowly. “Not even a little.”
Timi smirked, folding her arms. “Well, Jasmine already likes her. That’s dangerous enough. You know how she gets when she starts matchmaking.”
I shot her a look, but she only laughed.
“I mean it,” she added, her tone softening. “You’ve never brought anyone here before. Not like this. Everyone’s already talking.”
“Let them talk,” I said flatly, turning toward the stairs. “She’s here now. That’s all that matters.”
Timi nodded once, though the curiosity in her eyes didn’t fade. “Alright then. But whatever she is, Nelson… she’s just an omega."
Just an omega...? i doubt that.
