Chapter 8 Like ever....
/Edlyn/
The last person I expected to see in the car when I climbed in was the Supreme Alpha himself.
For a split second, I just froze halfway through the door, one hand gripping the edge, my breath caught somewhere between shock and why the hell is he here?
Wasn’t he supposed to be in another car? The lead car? Or at least surrounded by a dozen guards like the almighty leader he was?
Moon gasped inside me, tail wagging like she’d just found her favorite bone. He’s here! He’s really here! Oh, this is going to be fun.
Fun? Vamp hissed, stretching like a cat waking from sleep. More like delicious. I told you he couldn’t stay away.
When the hell did you tell me that...?
“Get in,” Nelson’s deep voice cut through my spiraling thoughts calm, steady, but carrying that command that made every cell in my body want to obey.
I slid in silently, settling on the seat across from him. The door shut behind me, and just like that, the car began to move.
The air inside was heavy. Not uncomfortable exactly but thick with something I couldn’t name. His scent filled every breath I took clean, wild, with that undertone of something dangerously warm. The fact that he smells like chocolate my favourite thing in the world wasn't helping either.
“Supreme Alpha,” I said softly, bowing my head in respect. I kept my gaze low, focused on the pattern stitched into my cloak instead of the man watching me from just a few feet away.
“Edlyn,” he greeted, his tone unreadable. “I trust you were informed of the arrangement?”
“Yes, Supreme Alpha.”
“And you’re fine with it?”
“Yes, Supreme Alpha.”
There was a short pause. I could feel his gaze on me, heavy, like he was trying to peel back the layers I kept so tightly wrapped around myself.
“You don’t have to keep calling me that every two words, you know,” he said finally, voice softer, almost amused.
“Yes, Supreme Alpha,” I replied before I could stop myself.
Moon snorted. You’re doing this on purpose.
Good, Vamp purred. Keep him annoyed. Angry men make stupid decisions.
Nelson let out a quiet chuckle, low and rough, and I felt my stomach twist. “Tell me, Edlyn,” he said, leaning back in his seat, “are you mad at me or just pretending to be polite?”
“I’m not mad, Supreme Alpha.”
His brows lifted. “You sure? You sound like you want to bite someone’s head off.”
I risked a glance up, and instantly regretted it. His eyes.... goddess, those eyes met mine, steady and burning blue. For a heartbeat, I forgot what air felt like.
“I wouldn’t dare, Supreme Alpha,” I said quickly, dropping my gaze again.
He leaned forward slightly, voice dropping low enough to make my pulse stutter. “You can stop all this already, Edlyn. You weren’t like this last night.”
Last night... was last night... I can’t have that repeat itself.
But for a moment, words failed me. I wanted to deny it, play the obedient omega again pretend the girl who fought him under the moonlight wasn’t me. But his eyes told me he already knew.
“Last night,” I said quietly, forcing calm into my voice, “was different.”
He tilted his head. “How so?”
I looked out the window, letting the trees blur past. “Last night, no one was watching.”
That shut him up for a second, at least.
But I could feel his energy shift curiosity sharpening, interest deepening.
He’s testing you again, Moon whispered.
Let him, Vamp said darkly. Tests are fun. Especially when you already know you’ll win.
The silence stretched between us, taut but not awkward.
I kept my eyes forward, heart racing even as I forced my voice steady. “If I may ask, Supreme Alpha… why are you the one escorting me personally? Don’t you have more important duties?”
His gaze didn’t waver. “Maybe I do,” he said. “But none as interesting as you.”
Moon made a delighted noise that sounded suspiciously like a giggle.
Vamp smirked. Oh, I like him.
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My pulse was already betraying me.
So instead, I stayed quiet, my head bowed again hiding the storm behind my calm.
Because if I looked at him for even a second longer, I might forget why getting close to him was the most dangerous thing I could ever do.
For a while, neither of us spoke. The hum of the engine filled the silence, a steady rhythm that did nothing to quiet the noise in my head.
He sat across from me, relaxed but alert, eyes occasionally flicking my way like he was trying to read every breath I took.
I could feel it that pull again. The bond I wasn’t supposed to have. The one Moon had sealed the moment we met.
I clenched my hands on my lap and finally said, “If I’m not stepping out of bounds, may I ask a question, Supreme Alpha?”
His gaze lifted instantly, sharp but not unkind. “Go ahead.”
I turned my eyes toward the window, because looking at him made words harder to form. “Why exactly do you want me in your pack? You have hundreds of wolves stronger and more skilled than me. Surely, an omega doesn’t add much to your ranks.”
The corner of his mouth tugged upward. “You really think I’d come all the way here for an omega to scrub floors and serve meals?”
I didn’t respond. I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear the answer.
He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, voice dropping low calm, certain, and with that edge of authority that came naturally to him.
“You’re too strong to be just an ordinary omega in the kitchen, Edlyn,” he said quietly. “You’re the type that belongs on a battlefield, not behind a stove.”
Moon preened inside me, proud. See? He sees us.
Or he smells us, Vamp said lazily. Either way, I like his taste in words.
I swallowed, forcing my tone to stay even. “May I remind you, Supreme Alpha,” I said slowly, “that I am wolfless?”
He tilted his head, eyes narrowing slightly, studying me as though he could see straight through my skin. “Wolfless?” he repeated, voice dipping into disbelief. “Is that what they told you, or what you told them?”
The air between us thickened instantly.
Moon went quiet. Even Vamp stilled.
My chest tightened. “It’s the truth,” I said, my voice sharper than I intended. “You can ask anyone in the Night Walk Pack.”
He didn’t look away. “Oh, I did,” he said, a faint smile ghosting across his lips. “I asked your Alpha. I asked his Beta. And yet, for a wolfless omega, you move like a trained warrior. You fight like someone who’s spent years learning to control her strength.”
I felt my pulse spike. “You think I’m lying?”
“I think,” he said slowly, “you’re hiding something big..... because there is no way in hell an omega could have taking on the strongest alpah.... like ever, but you did which is surprising"
The words hung there heavy, quiet, terrifyingly close to the truth.
I turned my gaze back to the window, pretending the passing trees were suddenly the most fascinating thing in the world. “You’re mistaken, Supreme Alpha.”
He didn’t press further, but his voice softened, steady and low. “Maybe. Or maybe I’m not. Either way… I’ll find out.”
Moon’s heartbeat fluttered in my head. He’s not letting this go.
Good, Vamp whispered, her tone darkly amused. Maybe he deserves to see what we really are.
“Relax,” he said suddenly, leaning back against the seat, a hint of teasing in his tone. “You don’t have to act like I’m dragging you to your death.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. “You can’t blame me for wondering what a Supreme Alpha wants with a so-called wolfless omega.”
He smiled faintly, eyes glinting in that infuriating way that made my heart beat too fast. “You’ll find out soon enough, Edlyn.”
I didn’t like the way he said that calm, certain, as if the answers I spent my life running from were already waiting for me at the end of this ride.
