Chapter 9 Flowers made of flames
THE FIFTH ELEMENT 🔥🌊🌪️⛰️🌠
~Cassie’s POV~
Madeleine drew her eyebrows together. “Oh. Is that so? It’ll probably come back to you later. Just tell me whenever you remember. Okay?” she said to me.
“Of course,” I replied.
“And we have to get ready for school. Today is a big day for you. You’ll find out more things about this school when you attend class.” Madeline went straight to the window and threw it wide open.
Morning light flooded the room, sharp and gold. I winced and looked away.
I flopped back on my bed and yanked the blanket over my head.
“Hey! No, no, no. You have to get up. Go get ready,” Madeline said and dragged the blanket off me.
I sighed out loud.
“I hate school. Magic or no magic,” I muttered and stood up. I went into the bathroom to shower and brush up.
When I came out, Madeline was already dressed in her green uniform. Her hair was pulled up into a cute, high ponytail that made her look even more put-together than usual.
I picked something nice from my closet and threw it on.
“So, you’re probably going to get a lot of stares because you’re not wearing a uniform. But hopefully when your element is discovered, we’ll know for sure what color represents it,” Madeline told me.
“Right. That’s if you guys got the right person,” I said, and Madeline rolled her eyes.
“You’re set. Let’s go,” she said and nudged me toward the door, half-pushing me out of the room.
🔥~
When we got to class, we took our seats and waited for the teacher to show up.
I scanned the classroom. Sand and gravel were piled in one corner like a tiny desert. A stone fountain bubbled quietly in another. A fireplace crackled against the far wall, even though it was already warm in here.
Everything about the classroom looked old-school. Heavy wooden desks, chalk dust in the air, tall arched windows. Just like that clinic did.
I glanced over at the students. Some wore red uniforms, some blue, some gray. Then green, just like Madeline.
Someone caught my eye. The handsome boy who’d been fighting with the blonde guy in the cafeteria… Damon, I think.
He was wearing blue.
I stared at him for a few seconds before looking away. If he really was trouble, I intended on staying away.
After a few minutes, an older man came into the classroom.
I assumed he was the teacher.
“Everyone, sorry I’m late. I was in a meeting,” the man said while dropping his bag on the table.
“So today, we’ll be learning control. Control of our powers. Yes, I know we have this great power, but how often do you let it control you instead of you controlling it? Today we’ll see how much control we have over it,” the teacher said.
He was about to say something else, but his eyes met mine and he paused for a second before recovering.
He continued talking about control.
I was thankful he didn’t try to make me introduce myself.
He went to the first student. “Now everyone, I want you to create a man riding his horse with your elements. Control your power and make it do what you wish,” the teacher said.
Everyone’s hands lifted into midair.
I looked over to Madeline. Her hands were up too. I watched what she was doing closely.
Grains of sand pulled away from the pile and swarmed together, spinning fast. I watched the particles closely, and saw them take the shape of a man on a moving horse. The sand horse’s legs even kicked, frozen mid-gallop.
I was amazed. I looked around at everyone’s creation, and it was a beautiful sight.
I saw the same image made of fire, flickering and bright. Another made of water, rippling but holding shape. One of earth, solid and textured. Even one of air — barely visible, just a shimmer like heat off pavement, but you could tell.
“Very good, everyone! Good job. Now let’s see the image of a boy playing football,” the teacher said, and again I was amazed at what I was seeing.
Miniature figures formed in seconds — a fire boy kicking a flame ball, a water boy heading a splash, a sand boy sliding into a tackle.
I felt somewhat useless being here. There was no way I could do something like this.
⛰️~
After class, I told Madeline that I needed some air. I went outside to take a break.
It’s not easy seeing these types of things happen right in front of your eyes.
I was staring into oblivion until I felt someone watching me. I couldn’t see who, but the back of my neck prickled. I was being watched.
I walked quickly until I entered one building. I went to the balcony and, surprisingly, saw someone else there.
His back was turned to me, so I cleared my throat and he turned to look at me.
It was him. The blonde fire boy.
“Um, sorry, I didn’t know someone was already here,” I said to him.
“It’s okay. I was leaving,” he said and started to go.
“I saw you at my house,” I blurted out.
“Yeah. I know,” he replied.
“I also saw you at the cafeteria,” I said to him.
“I know,” he said with a straight face.
I looked down at my feet, and when I looked up, he was gone.
I was kinda disappointed. I went over to the balcony edge.
I heard something spark and looked up to see fire bloom in the air above me. I flinched for a second, but then the flames twisted, smoothed, and curled into the shape of a rose — petals made of fire, stem and all, hovering and burning without smoke.
I was amazed at the sight. I looked down from the balcony and saw him looking up at me. We stared at each other for a few seconds before he walked away.
🔥
I was still at the balcony thinking about what just happened.
‘Did he make that flower for me?’ I thought to myself.
‘Of course he did. There is no one else here.’ I smiled at the thought.
I was smiling like an
idiot, enjoying the view from up here, until I heard footsteps approaching where I was standing.
Who is it now?
